Description

The present invention relates to printing control according to a combination of color materials.

In recent years, the types of ink that can be used in home printers have been increasing. This is because a wider color reproduction gamut utilizing the unique color of each ink material can be realized by using more types of inks in combination. However, there are users who want to give priority to printing with as few kinds of ink as possible rather than realizing a wide color reproduction gamut. For example, in order to print a document in which a color reproduction gamut is not important in a printer equipped with 6 inks, there is a situation where the user has to bother to purchase all 6 inks. Selection of print quality requested by the user can be realized to some extent by selecting a printer model (for example, selecting a 4-ink-equipped model or a 6-ink-equipped model), but individually satisfies the requirements of an unspecified number of users. It is practically impossible for a printer manufacturer to provide all models. In addition, it is possible that the usage of the printer will fluctuate after the purchase of the printer by a single user, and it is necessary to prepare ink for realizing the print quality that the user does not currently require. It is also possible that this will occur.
On the other hand, a technique for presenting or switching ink combinations having a color reproduction gamut that covers the color gamut indicated by image data to be printed has been proposed (see Patent Document 1). According to such a configuration, ink suitable for printing image data to be printed can be used for printing.
JP 2006-82460 A

However, when the ink used for printing is dynamically changed according to the image data to be printed, printing cannot actually be performed simply by mounting the changed ink on the printer. In order to finally drive the printer head in accordance with the image data to be printed, a color conversion profile that defines a conversion rule for converting the image data to be printed into image data of the changed ink amount is used. It is necessary. In the above-mentioned document, it is considered that the print control unit 18 (see paragraph 0107 of Patent Document 1) has the function, but it is not clear what color conversion profile is used. . For example, in anticipation of any ink combination, there may be a method of preparing an infinite number of color conversion profiles corresponding to all ink combinations, but the color conversion profile defines conversion rules between color space and ink amount space. However, since the amount of data is large, this method is not practical if the number of usable ink combinations increases. Therefore, even if an ink set that can realize a good color reproduction gamut exists, there is a problem that color conversion corresponding to the ink set cannot be performed flexibly. Furthermore, the user's request for the print result is not limited to the color reproduction gamut, and it is necessary to flexibly use an ink set that improves the other print performance.
In order to solve the above problems, an object of the present invention is to realize printing that satisfies the printing performance required by an arbitrary color material set.

In order to achieve the above object, the request receiving means receives a request for print performance. The selection means predicts the printing performance when printing is performed with each color material set configured by the combination of the color materials, and selects the color material set that satisfies the request based on the prediction. Further, the creating means is a color space expressed by a color material amount set that is a combination of the use amounts of the respective color materials constituting the selected color material set, and is different from the first color space. A color conversion profile that defines conversion rules for converting the image data so as to be expressed in a color space is created. Thereby, it is possible to perform printing using the color material set that satisfies the required printing performance.

In addition, when the selection unit selects the color material set, a restriction on the color material set used for printing may be received, and the color material set may be selected within the restriction. For example, a color material that is necessarily used may be accepted as the restriction, and the color material set including the color material may be selected.

Further, as a specific example of the request, it may be accepted as the request that a predetermined color reproduction gamut should be secured. In this case, color reproduction gamut data storing information on the color reproduction gamut when printing is performed with each color material set that is a combination of the color materials that can be used in the printing apparatus is prepared. For example, considering ink as a color material, data indicating how much color reproduction gamut can be reproduced when printing with which combination of inks (ink set) is stored for each ink set. Then, when printing the image data to be printed, the color material set having a color reproduction gamut suitable for printing the image data is selected based on the color reproduction gamut data. Therefore, by performing color conversion using the created color conversion profile, it is possible to perform printing capable of realizing a color reproduction gamut suitable for printing image data to be printed. That is, even if the color material set used for printing is dynamically changed according to the image data, printing can be performed using the color conversion profile corresponding to the color material set.

There is a case where the user has to perform an operation to make the color material usable. For example, in a general inkjet printer, the ink to be used cannot be changed unless the user replaces the ink cartridge. For this reason, it is desirable to further provide notification means, and to notify the user of the color material set by notifying the color material set.

Various criteria can be adopted for determining whether or not the color material set has a color reproduction gamut suitable for printing image data to be printed. For example, the color material set having a color reproduction gamut that includes all the colors indicated by the image data to be printed is suitable because all colors of the image data can be reproduced. Judgment can be made. Further, the color material set having the color reproduction gamut suitable for the attribute of the image data may be determined without comparing the color indicated by the image data to be printed with the color reproduction gamut. For example, the color material set having a suitable color reproduction gamut may be determined depending on whether the image data is a document or a photograph.

Furthermore, when printing, it may be considered that any one of the color material sets is already usable in the printing apparatus. In such a case, the above-described color material set that is in a usable state is acquired, and a warning may be issued when the color material set does not have a color reproduction gamut suitable for printing image data to be printed. . Also, when printing, the user may specify the color material set that the user wants to use. Even in such a case, a warning may be issued when the color material set designated by the user for printing does not have a color reproduction gamut suitable for printing image data to be printed. Moreover, you may make it notify the said suitable color material set with these warnings. Further, whether or not an appropriate color reproduction gamut can be reproduced may be confirmed for the created color conversion profile. The color conversion profile is created with an appropriate color reproduction gamut as a target, but it may be created in a state where the color reproduction gamut is impaired by giving priority to another target (for example, image quality). Therefore, it is desirable to verify the color reproduction gamut based on the created color conversion profile.

Furthermore, as a specific example of the request, suppression of graininess may be accepted as the request. In this case, the selection means selects the color material set that satisfies the request based on a granularity prediction model prepared in advance. That is, by predicting the graininess of each color material set based on the graininess prediction model, it is possible to select the color material set that can suppress the graininess. Further, suppression of graininess for a specific target color may be accepted as the request. Thereby, the printing which suppresses a granular feeling can be performed especially about the target color which a granular feeling is worried about.

Further, as a specific method for specifying the target color, the target color is a color indicated by a specified color value, a color indicated by a specified color patch, or an area specified by a displayed image. May be acquired based on the color indicated by. The target color can be specified intuitively according to the color indicated by the specified color patch or the color indicated by the area indicated in the displayed image, and strictly according to the color indicated by the specified color value. The target color can be designated.

Further, in selecting the color material set that suppresses the graininess for the target color based on the graininess prediction model, it is necessary to confirm whether the color material set can reproduce the target color. . This is because, even if the color material set has a good graininess, the above requirement cannot be satisfied unless the target color can be reproduced. Therefore, first, the color material amount set capable of reproducing the target color is specified based on a color prediction model, and the granularity prediction model is selected from the specified color material amount set that has the least graininess. Identify based on. And the said color material set which can provide the said color material amount set by which a granular feeling is suppressed most is selected. Moreover, you may make it specify previously what can reproduce the said target color as mentioned above, or by using the evaluation index which evaluates the approximation degree to the said target color, and the suppression degree of the said graininess simultaneously. The optimum color material amount set may be specified.

The print head 29 is reciprocated together with the carriage 21 by driving the carriage motor 28, and a raster in the main scanning direction can be formed by relative movement between the ink nozzle and the printing paper by the reciprocation. On the other hand, the paper feed mechanism 27 moves the printing paper in the sub-scanning direction orthogonal to the main scanning direction, so that a flat image can be printed on the printing paper. The printer in this embodiment is an inkjet printer, but the present invention can be applied to various printers other than the inkjet printer. For example, the present invention can also be applied to a laser printer that uses toner as a color material.

The carriage 21 includes cartridge holders 21a, 21a,... To which ink cartridges 22a, 22a,... Can be attached, and the ink cartridges 22a, 22a,. Can be fixed. In the present embodiment, eight cartridge holders 21a, 21a,... Are provided, and eight ink cartridges 22a, 22a,. Each of the ink cartridges 22a, 22a,... Contains ink formed by mixing a pigment or dye coloring material with a liquid.

Each of the ink cartridges 22a, 22a,... Contains different types of ink, and reproduces a color image by subtractive color mixing with each ink. The ink cartridges 22a, 22a,... Are provided with non-volatile ROMs 22a1, 22a1,... For storing identification data for identifying the type of each ink and remaining amount data for specifying the remaining amount of each ink. Yes. The ink cartridges 22a, 22a, ... are mounted on the cartridge holders 21a, 21a, so that terminals (not shown) provided on the cartridge holders 21a, 21a, ... are electrically connected to the ROMs 22a1, 22a1, ... The status check unit FW1 of the firmware FW executed by the CPU 23 and the RAM 24 can acquire the type and remaining amount of ink stored in each ink cartridge 22a, 22a. The status checking unit FW1 transmits the ink mounting status to the computer 10 via the USB I / F 26.

.. Are mounted on the cartridge holders 21a, 21a,..., So that the ink supply path in the ink cartridges 22a, 22a... And the cartridge holders 21a, 21a. The ink supply path to 29 ink nozzles is connected. In this embodiment, the cartridge holders 21a, 21a,... All have the same shape, and the ink cartridges 22a, 22a,. Therefore, any ink cartridge 22a, 22a,... Can be mounted in any cartridge holder 21a, 21a,. Therefore, the combination of ink sets that can be generated when 13 types of ink are mounted on the eight cartridge holders 21a, 21a,... the number is, 13 C 8 + 13 C 7 + 13 C 6 + 13 C 5 + 13 C 4 + 13 C 3 + 13 C 2 + 13 C 1 = as many as 7098 pieces. However, it suffices that the user can arbitrarily mount at least some ink cartridges 22a, 22a..., And some cartridge holders 21a, 21a. ... you may be allowed to install only. For example, the combination of inks that can ensure a minimum color reproduction gamut that can be reproduced may be limited to be mounted on specific cartridge holders 21a, 21a.

A-2. Ink Set Setting FIG. 4 shows the flow of an ink set setting process. In step S110, the UI unit PD1 displays a UI screen on the display 30 and receives a print instruction via the keyboard 40a and the mouse 40b. The image data acquisition unit PD2 receives image data to be printed, such as the HDD 11 or the like. Obtain from another application program. In the present embodiment, it is assumed that image data in which the color of each pixel is specified by RGB coordinates in the sRGB color space is specified as image data to be printed. When the image data to be printed can be acquired, in step S120, the printer information acquisition unit PD3 communicates with the status check unit FW1 being executed in the printer 20 via the USB I / F 14, thereby acquiring printer information. In the present embodiment, the mounting status of the ink cartridges 22a, 22a... In the cartridge holders 21a, 21a.

同図において、当該プリンタ20の機種に搭載可能なインクカートリッジ22a,22a・・・は、M(マゼンタ)インクとlm(ライトマゼンタ)インクとC(シアン)インクとlc(ライトシアン)インクとY(イエロー)インクとK(ブラック)インクとlk(グレー)インクとllk(ライトグレー)インクとR(レッド)インクとO(オレンジ)インクとG(グリーン)インクとB(ブルー)インクとdy(ダークイエロー)インクをそれぞれ収容したものとなっている。 FIG. 5 schematically illustrates an example of the mounting status of the ink cartridges 22a, 22a... In the cartridge holders 21a, 21a. In the figure, ink cartridges 22a, 22a,... That can be mounted on the model of the printer 20 are M (magenta) ink, lm (light magenta) ink, C (cyan) ink, lc (light cyan) ink, and Y ( Yellow) ink, K (black) ink, lk (gray) ink, llk (light gray) ink, R (red) ink, O (orange) ink, G (green) ink, B (blue) ink and dy (dark) Yellow) ink is accommodated. Each of the ink cartridges 22a, 22a,... Is provided with the above-described ROM 22a1, 22a1,.

Therefore, in step S120, by accessing the ROMs 22a1, 22a1,... Of the ink cartridges 22a, 22a... On which the status check unit FW1 is mounted, they are accommodated in the mounted ink cartridges 22a, 22a. Ink information can be acquired. The non-mounted cartridge holders 21a, 21a,... Cannot access the ROMs 22a1, 22a1,. Further, even if it is mounted, if it is recorded in the ROMs 22a1, 22a1,... That there is no ink remaining, it may be recognized that it is not mounted.

The ink cartridges 22a, 22a,... Containing the 13 types of ink are independent and can be purchased separately. The user purchases favorite ink cartridges 22a, 22a... And mounts them on the cartridge holders 21a, 21a. In this embodiment, it is assumed that an ink set composed of CMYKRlclm ink (seven types) is mounted on the cartridge holders 21a, 21a,.

In step S130, the color reproduction gamut data GD stored in the HDD 11 is acquired, and the color reproduction gamut of the ink set composed of CMYKRlclm that is currently usable in the printer 20 is acquired. In the color reproduction gamut data GD of this embodiment, it is assumed that the color reproduction gamut of each ink set is specified by the L * a * b * value in the CIELAB color space. Further, the color reproduction gamut data GD may be data that stores only the color reproduction gamut when printed on standard printing paper using each ink set and observed with a standard observation light source. More strictly, the color reproduction gamut of each ink set for each type of printing paper to be printed and the color reproduction gamut of each ink set for each observation light source to be observed may be stored. In the case of this embodiment, the color reproduction gamut is specified by the L * a * b * value in the CIELAB color space for each 7098 ink sets.

The color reproduction gamut data GD is stored in the HDD 11 when the printer driver PD is installed. In step S140, the RGB value of each pixel of the image data to be printed acquired in step S110 is acquired, and the RGB of each pixel is sequentially converted into an L * a * b * value in the CIELAB color space. It is defined by the sRGB profile SP conforming to the CIE standard of the sRGB color space and the CIELAB color space in which the image data to be printed is represented. The sRGB profile SP is read from the HDD 11 and the RGB values are L * a * b * values. Can be converted to When creating a profile for performing color correction, the profile may be converted into an L * a * b * value that takes color correction into consideration. In step S150, it is determined whether the L * a * b * values of all the pixels of the image data to be printed are within the color reproduction gamut of the CMYKRlclm ink set.

FIG. 6 schematically illustrates the determination in step S150. In the drawing, the a * b * plane at a certain lightness (L * ) in the CIELAB color space is shown, and the color reproduction gamut of the CMYKRlclm ink set is shown by a solid line. Also, the distribution range of the a * b * values of the pixels of the lightness among the pixels of the image data to be printed is indicated by a broken line. In the example in the figure, it is shown that the color reproduction gamut of the CMYKRlclm ink set does not completely cover the pixel data distribution range, and that the color in the green (green) direction cannot be reproduced with the CMYKRlclm ink set. Yes. The comparison between the color reproduction gamut and the color gamut that the image data can take is performed for all the lightness (L * ).

Note that the color reproduction gamut comparison is desirably performed in a non-device-dependent color space, and may be performed in an sRGB color space or an XYZ color space. If it is determined that the L * a * b * values of all the pixels of the image data to be printed exist in the color reproduction gamut of the ink set mounted on the printer 20, the ink set setting unit PD4 determines that the printer 20 Is set as an ink set to be used for printing (step S190), and the process proceeds to the color conversion profile creation guideline setting process in step S200. On the other hand, if it is determined that the L * a * b * values of all the pixels of the image data to be printed are not within the color reproduction gamut of the CMYKRlclm ink set, as shown in the example of FIG. An ink set having a color reproduction gamut optimum for printing target image data is selected by the color reproduction gamut data GD.

Since the color reproduction gamut data GD stores information for specifying the color reproduction gamut for all (7098) ink sets that can be combined, ink having a color reproduction gamut suitable for printing image data to be printed A set can be selected. An example of a specific procedure for this selection is shown below. First, the ratio of the number of pixels whose L * a * b * values are present inside the color reproduction gamut of each ink set to the number of pixels of the entire image data is calculated as the coverage. Then, the ink sets are sorted in descending order of coverage. In an ink set with a coverage of 100%, the L * a * b * values of all the pixels of the image data to be printed are present in the color reproduction gamut, so that good color reproducibility can be realized. Accordingly, there is no problem in using any ink set as long as the ink set has a cover rate of 100%.

However, since there is no proof that the user owns the ink cartridges 22a, 22a... That are not mounted on the cartridge holders 21a, 21a... Of the printer 20, it is possible from the currently installed ink set (CMYKRlclm) as much as possible. Select an ink set with less variation. In the present embodiment, an ink set obtained by adding G ink to an ink set (CMYKRlclm) that is currently available is selected as the optimum ink set. Of course, an ink set that satisfies the coverage rate of 100% and has the smallest number of inks may be selected as an optimal one, or an ink set that has a margin in color reproduction gamut is selected as an optimal one. You may do it. Conversely, an ink set that satisfies 100% coverage and has the smallest color reproduction gamut may be selected as the optimum one. If the number of grid points is the same, the smaller the color reproduction gamut, the higher the density of the grid points, so that a color conversion profile CP with good gradation can be created. On the other hand, when no ink set satisfying the cover ratio of 100% is selected, the ink set having the highest cover ratio is selected as the optimum ink set. In the next step S170, the UI unit PD1 displays a UI screen on the display 30 and a warning / notification screen.

FIG. 7 shows an example of a warning / notification screen. In the same figure, the display of the ink set (CMYKRlclm) in which the ink cartridges 22a, 22a... Are mounted on the cartridge holders 21a, 21a. It is shown that it cannot be reproduced. In addition, a display recommending the optimum ink set selected in step S160 is displayed. Further, when replacing the ink, it is indicated that the ink cartridge is replaced and the retry button is clicked. At the bottom of the screen, a button for the user to select either ignore, retry or cancel is provided.

In step S180, it is detected that the selection button has been pressed via the mouse 40b. If the ignore button is pressed, the ink set mounted on the printer 20 is set as an ink set to be used for printing (step S190). The process proceeds to the color conversion profile creation guideline setting process of S200. If the retry button is pressed, the process returns to step S120, and the processes from step S120 to S160 are similarly performed for the ink set after replacement. Therefore, when the ink cartridges 22a, 22a... As recommended by the user are mounted in the cartridge holders 21a, 21a. After setting, the process proceeds to step S200. If the cancel button is pressed, the process is terminated as it is.

A-3. Setting of Color Conversion Profile Creation Guidelines FIG. 8 shows the flow of the color conversion profile creation policy setting process (step S200). In step S210, the UI unit PD1 displays a UI screen on the display 30, and accepts designation of the type of printing paper used for printing and the observation light source for observing the printed matter.

FIG. 9 shows the UI screen displayed in step S210. In the figure, it is possible to designate the type of printing paper used for printing and the observation light source for observing the printed matter. Here, the following description will be made assuming that glossy paper is selected as the printing paper and D65 light is selected as the observation light source. When the UI unit PD1 recognizes that the determination button has been clicked with the mouse 40b, the profile creation guideline setting unit PD5 acquires an existing color conversion profile already stored in the HDD 11 in step S220.

In step S230, the profile creation guideline setting unit PD5 determines the necessity of creating a color conversion profile. Here, the ink set set in the ink set setting process in step S100, and the designated print paper and observation light source are the ink set, print paper, and light source of any color conversion profile acquired in step S220. It is determined whether or not they match. If the color conversion profile of the same ink set, printing paper, and light source already exists in the HDD 11, it is not necessary to create a new color conversion profile, and printing is executed as it is in step S400 of FIG. On the other hand, if the ink set, the printing paper, and the observation light source do not match any of the existing color conversion profiles, it is determined that a color conversion profile needs to be created. If it is determined that a color conversion profile needs to be created, in step S240, the UI unit PD1 displays a UI screen on the display 30 and accepts designation of a color conversion profile creation guideline from the user via the keyboard 40a and the mouse 40b. .

In the above equation (1), E p represents an evaluation function, and the smaller the evaluation function E p is, the higher the overall printing performance is. ψ is the ink amount sets (d c which means a combination of ink amounts of each ink of the set ink set (CMYKGlclm in this embodiment), d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm ). The first term of the above formula (1) is a term that requires the performance of the graininess of the printed matter, the second term is a term that requires the performance of the color constancy with respect to the light source fluctuation of the print color, and the third term is is a term that requires the gradation performance of the printed matter, the fourth term is a term which requires the performance of the color reproduction gamut, the fifth term each ink amounts d c, d m, d y , d k, d The sum of g , d lc , and d lm is a term that requires the performance of the running cost of ink consumed during printing.

Also Section 5, the ink amount sets (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) because it depends on, can be said to be a function of [psi. Note that T Duty is a value corresponding to the limit of the amount of ink that can adhere to the recording medium. The smaller the amount of ink, the better the running cost. Therefore, the smaller the fifth term in equation (1), the more optimal. Both terms are scalars normalized by the same size, and the smaller the value, the higher the performance. Also, the evaluation function E p that can evaluate the overall printing performance is obtained by linearly combining the first to fifth terms corresponding to each performance element while adjusting the weights using the individual weighting factors w 1 to w 5 . Is defined. That is, the weighting factors w 1 to w 5 mean values for adjusting which performance element is important.

Here, when mode 1 is selected, the weighting factor w 1 is set to be larger than the default value, and the other weighting factors w 2 to w 5 are uniformly reduced from the default value. Thus, it is possible to increase the contribution to the evaluation function E p graininess performance. Similarly, if the mode 2-5 is selected, each set a larger weighting coefficient w 2 to w 5 from the default value, uniformly reduce other weighting coefficients w 1 to w 5 from the default value. Thus, it is possible to increase the contribution to the evaluation function E p of each performance elements. Further, when mode 6 is selected, the weighting factors w 1 to w 4 are set to be larger from the default value as a whole, and only the weighting factor w 5 is reduced from the default value. Thus, the contribution to the evaluation function E p performance elements corresponding to the first to fourth terms regarding quality can be increased overall. The default value is a value that balances the importance of each performance element.

If the mode 7 is selected, the profile creation guideline setting section PD5 sets the weighting factor w 1 to w 5 best based on the information obtained so far. Here, optimum weighting factors w 1 to w 5 can be set based on various determination methods. For example, it can be considered that the higher the quality of the printing paper specified in step S210, the higher the user's request for image quality. In such a case, the weighting factors w 1 to w 4 are set to be larger than the default values as a whole, but only the weighting factor w 5 is changed from the default value, although it is not more noticeable than when mode 6 is explicitly specified. Make it smaller. In the present embodiment, since the glossy paper is selected in step S210, and thus is generally set large weighting coefficient w 1 to w 4 from the default value.

Conversely, it can be considered that the lower the designated printing paper is, the lower the user's requirement for image quality is. In this case, the weighting factors w 1 to w 4 are set to be smaller from the default value as a whole, but only the weighting factor w 5 is increased from the default value. .

In addition, there may be a case where the manufacturer of the printer 20 recommends a specific ink set. For example, an ink set composed of CMYKRGBlk may be recommended as an ink set that can reproduce vivid colors. If CMYKRGBlk recommended as is installed in the printer 20, there is a need to emphasize the color reproduction gamut of high saturation, it should be set larger the weighting factor w 4. In addition, as an ink set suitable for monotone printing, an ink set made of YKlklclm may be recommended. If YKlklclm recommended as is installed in the printer 20, there is a need to emphasize the gradation should be set larger weighting coefficient w 3. In this way, the correspondence between the specific ink set and the weighting factors w 1 to w 5 may be preset.

Further, since the remaining amount of ink can be read from the ROMs 22a1, 22a1,... Of each ink cartridge 22a, 22a,..., Mode 7 is optimal in accordance with the remaining amount of ink designated for use in printing. The weighting factors w 1 to w 5 may be automatically set. When the remaining amount of any of the designated inks used for printing is small, the ink consumption should be suppressed as much as possible, so the weight coefficient w 5 should be set larger than the default value. Further, the degree of increasing the weighting factor w 5 may be determined in consideration of the number of printed sheets and the color indicated by the image data to be printed. For example, when the number of printed sheets is small, printing can be completed without increasing the weighting factor w 5 too much.

Furthermore, the weighting factors w 1 to w 4 can be set according to the image data designated as the print target in step S110. For example, when the image data to be printed indicates a grayscale image or a sepia image, the image needs to be expressed only by gradation, so that the weighting factor w 3 is set larger than the default value as in mode 3, and other The weight coefficients w 1 , w 2 , w 4 , and w 5 may be uniformly reduced from the default values. Moreover, since conspicuous also shift in color, the weighting coefficient w 2 similarly to Mode 2 is set larger from the default value, and other weighting factors w 1, a w 3 to w 5 so as to uniformly reduce the default value May be. Of course, the weighting factors w 1 to w 5 can be set according to whether the image data to be printed is a document or a photograph. Further, at step S180, if the ignore button is pressed, to set a larger weighting coefficient w 4, may be as wide as possible and the color reproduction gamut. When the weighting coefficients w 1 to w 5 as described above is set, the evaluation will be the function E p is determined, creation guideline is set in the process of creating the color conversion profile to be described below (step S300) It will be.

A-4. Creation of Color Conversion Profile CP FIG. 11 shows the flow of processing for creating a color conversion profile CP executed by the profile creation unit PD6, and FIG. 12 schematically shows the procedure for creating the color conversion profile CP. In step S310 shown in FIG. 11, the conditions for creating the color conversion profile CP are acquired and set in the spectral printing model converter RC and the color converter CC. The spectral printing model converter RC and the color converter CC predict colors (L * a * b * ) in the CIELAB color space, which is an absolute color space, from the ink amount set. It depends on the observation light source. Therefore, the printing paper (glossy paper) and the observation light source (D65) designated in step S210 are set in the spectral printing model converter RC and the color converter CC.

In step S320, an initial ink profile IP is created. The ink profile IP is the CIELAB color space (L * a * b *) , an ink amount space used for printing in the present embodiment CMYKGlclm space (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g , D lc , d lm ) are profiles defining a plurality of representative lattice points. Early in the creation of the ink profile IP, for example an ink amount space from 17 three sets of random ink amount set to be used for printing (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) Is generated. Further, the ink amount set corresponding to the initial lattice point (d c, d m, d y, d k, d lc, d lm) If is obtained, these ink amount set (d c, d m, d y , D k , d g , d lc , d lm ), the color (L * a * b * ) when printing is performed on the printing paper designated in step S210 and observed under the designated light source. Can be obtained by prediction of the spectral printing model converter RC and the color converter CC. Accordingly, describes obtained color (L * a * b *) and the ink amount sets (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) each lattice point corresponding relationship Thus, the initial ink profile IP can be created. The initial 17 3 sets of ink amount sets, since we are optimized by process described below, may be any generated at an early stage.

Next, in step S330, the profile creation unit PD6 acquires the evaluation function E p and the weighting factors w 1 to w 5 set in step S200. In the next step S340, the initial ink amount sets (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) continue to sequentially optimization. Specifically, the ink amount sets which minimize the evaluation function E p showing the overall printing performance for each grid point (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) of Calculate sequentially. For example, locally moving the ink amount set from the position of the initial ink amount set in the ink amount space, we calculate for each grid point an ink amount sets which minimize the evaluation function E p at that time.

Thus, the position of the lattice points in the ink amount space is modified in a direction that minimizes the evaluation function E p. Furthermore, likewise locally moving the ink amount sets the position of the corrected, will calculated for each grid point an ink amount sets which minimize the evaluation function E p at that time. By repeatedly executing the above processing (for example, 200 times), the evaluation function E p for each lattice point is ultimately optimized to a very small lattice point (high overall printing performance). Can do. It should be noted that the optimization of the grid point may be completed by performing the above process a specified number of times, or the optimization of the grid point may be completed when the value of the evaluation function E p falls below a predetermined threshold value.

In this optimization process, it is necessary to calculate the evaluation function E p for the ink amount sets (d c , d m , dy , d k , d g , d lc , d lm ) that are sequentially updated. in this case, each converter RC, which will be described later, CC, GC, by utilizing SC, sequentially, each of the ink amount sets (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) in The corresponding spectral reflectance R (λ), graininess index GI, color constancy index CII, smoothness evaluation index SI, color difference ΔE, and total ink amount are calculated, and the evaluation function Ep is obtained. When performing optimization, the spectral printing model converter RC and the color converter CC predict the color (L * a * b * ) based on the printing paper and observation light source set in step S210. In the present embodiment, the grid point optimization technique disclosed in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2006-197080 can also be applied. In this case, a virtual force in the direction in which the evaluation function E p is 0 is applied to each lattice point in the ink amount space, and the position of the lattice point in the ink amount space is converged to a steady state by the force. .

As each grid point as described above is optimized, step S350 Oite, ink amount sets of optimized lattice points (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d The color (L * a * b * ) corresponding to lm ) is calculated by the spectral printing model converter RC and the color converter CC. Here again, the spectral printing model converter RC and the color converter CC perform color (L * a * b * ) prediction based on the printing paper (glossy paper) and the observation light source (D65 light) set in step S210. . Then, the profile of the corresponding L * a * b * values and the ink amount sets (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) ink profile IP that describes the correspondence between the mutually The creation unit PD6 creates it.

。 In step S360, the profile creation unit PD6 creates a color conversion profile CP based on the ink profile IP. As shown in FIG. 12, the color conversion profile CP is a profile for converting, for example, image data in which the color of each pixel is expressed in the sRGB color space into image data in the ink amount space in the printer 20. Since the sRGB color space has a corresponding relationship (sRGB profile SP) with the CIELAB color space based on the CIE standard, the sRGB color space is determined by the L * a * b * values of each grid point defined in the ink profile IP. it can be RGB values and the ink amount set to identify the correspondence between the (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm), is profiled. Further, RGB values of the sRGB color space and the ink amount sets (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) in identifying the correspondence between the, intentionally correction amount It is also possible to create a color conversion profile for performing color correction. It is desirable that the sRGB profile SP is also optimized by the smoothness degree evaluation index SI (see Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2006-197080).

Since the gamut of the sRGB color space in the CIELAB color space and the color reproduction gamut of the printer 20 are different, gamut mapping is appropriately performed. In this gamut mapping, when the color reproduction gamut of the printer 20 using the ink set used is narrower than the sRGB color space, the colors inside the sRGB color space and outside the color reproduction gamut are included in the color reproduction gamut of the printer 20. Compression (modification) is performed. However, in the present embodiment, the color indicated by each pixel of the image data to be printed is within the color reproduction gamut of the printer 20 when CMYKGlclm is used, except when the ignore button is pressed in step S180. Since it has been confirmed in the ink set setting process in step S100, the print result of the image data to be printed can reduce the influence of color compression in gamut mapping. In step S160, if the ink set having the most margin in the color reproduction gamut is selected as the optimum one, the influence of color compression by gamut mapping can be further suppressed. The profile creation unit PD6 attaches a header specifying the printing paper (glossy paper) and the observation light source (D65 light) to the created color conversion profile CP and stores it in the HDD 11.

In the color conversion profile CP which is created as described above, the ink amount sets (d c in the RGB value and the ink amount space of the sRGB color space, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm ) Can be defined for a plurality of (for example, 17 3 ) lattice points. Further, in the color conversion profile CP, the ink amount set (d c , d) in which the granularity, color constancy, gradation, color reproduction gamut, and running cost are good according to the respective weighting factors w 1 to w 5. m , d y , d k , d g , d lc , d lm ) will be defined. By performing the above-described optimization, the coordinates (d c , d m , dy , d k , d g , d lc , d lm ) of the lattice points in the ink amount space are obtained in terms of graininess, color constancy, and gradation. This is because the color reproduction gamut and the running cost are gradually moved to an area where the running cost is good, and finally it can be moved to the optimum position. Although the color gamut of the color to be reproduced in the printed image does not vary greatly, it can be said that the degree of freedom of the area of the ink amount space corresponding to the color gamut is much greater. That is, even if one L * a * b * value is determined in the CIELAB color space, an ink amount set (d c ,) that realizes a print result in which the L * a * b * value can be reproduced under a certain light source. d m , dy , d k , d g , d lc , d lm ) cannot be uniquely determined.

For example, since K ink and CMY ink have a relationship capable of color separation, the same L * a * b * can be reproduced even if the color separation ratio is changed in a certain light source. The same applies to the relationship between C ink and lc ink and between M ink and lm ink. For example, the separation ratio between K ink and CMY ink cannot be determined uniquely even if the L * a * b * value in the CIELAB color space is determined. However, if dark K ink is generated in the highlight area, the graininess is reduced. It will stand out. Thus, in terms of graininess, by suppressing the d k for L * a * b * values of the highlight area, the ink amount sets (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d It can be said that lc , dlm ) can be optimized. On the other hand, reducing the ink amount d k of K ink, the spectral reflectance when intensive composite gray by CMY inks not flat, so that the color constancy is impaired. Thus, it is difficult to satisfy a plurality of performance factors at the same time, and it is practically impossible to define a separation rule that solves such a compromise in a multidimensional ink amount space. Furthermore, if it is possible to set which performance factor is important, it is difficult to specify the separation rules.

On the other hand, by optimizing each grid point by using the evaluation function E p that is an index of the overall printing performance, the degree of importance of each performance element is set by weighting factors w 1 to w 5 , suitable ink amount set without defining a complex separation rules described above (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) can locate. In addition, since the weighting factors w 1 to w 5 are set according to the user's designation, it is possible to create a color conversion profile CP that can realize the printing performance according to the user's intention. If the color conversion profile CP can be created, color conversion processing and printing processing are executed in step S400.

A-5. Color Conversion and Printing FIG. 13 shows the flow of color conversion processing and printing processing. In step S410, the color conversion unit PD7 acquires the image data designated as the printing target in step S110, the printing paper designated in step S210, and the observation light source. In the present embodiment, it is specified that sRGB image data is printed on glossy paper and observed with D65 light. In step S420, the image data acquired in step S410 and the color conversion profile CP corresponding to the printing paper and the observation light source are acquired from the HDD 11. In the present embodiment, since the corresponding color conversion profile CP is created in step S260, the color conversion profile CP is acquired. If the profile creation guideline setting unit PD5 determines in step S150 that the color conversion profile CP need not be created, the corresponding existing color conversion profile CP exists in the HDD 11 in step S420. Therefore, the existing color conversion profile CP is acquired from the HDD 11.

In step S430, the image data to be printed acquired in step S410 is color-converted using the color conversion profile CP acquired in step S420. Specifically, to get the RGB values of each pixel of the image data, the ink amount sets corresponding to the RGB value (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) Are sequentially acquired by the color conversion profile CP. The color conversion profile CP defines the correspondence only for typical grid points, but the ink amount sets (d c , d m , d y , d k , d g , d lc corresponding to the RGB values between the grid points. , D lm ) can be obtained by interpolation. Ink amount set for all the pixels (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) When is determined by interpolation, each pixel is an ink amount sets (d c, d m, d y , d k , d g , d lc , d lm ).

In the present invention, an ink set to be used for printing is acquired, a color conversion profile CP that matches the ink set is selected, and if there is no match, the profile creation unit PD6 selects a color conversion profile CP corresponding to the ink set. Like to create. Accordingly, the color conversion profile CP corresponding to all the ink sets that can be considered in advance (when 13 types of ink are mounted on the eight cartridge holders 21a, 21a..., 7098 types of ink sets can be considered). It is possible to print with any ink set that the user wants to use.

In the next step S440, it acquires the color conversion data having pixel information of the ink amount set the print data generating unit PD8 (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm), Halftone processing is executed on the color conversion data. Here, a dither method, an error diffusion method, or the like can be applied. Each pixel discharges / does not discharge ink, or discharges a large dot / discharges a medium dot / discharges a small dot / all. It is converted into halftone data having information specifying whether or not to discharge. In step S450, the print data generation unit PD8 acquires halftone data and executes microweave processing based on the halftone data.

Specifically, print data specifying which ink nozzle at which main scanning / sub-scanning timing is assigned to each pixel of the halftone data is generated. In step S450, the print data generation unit PD8 outputs the print data attached with the control information of the printer 20 such as print conditions to the printer 20 via the USB I / F 14. In step S460, the firmware FW of the printer 20 acquires print data and generates drive signals for the paper feed mechanism 27, the carriage motor 28, and the print head 29 based on the print data. Thus, the ink amount set with each pixel of the color conversion data at each position on the printing paper (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) the amount of ink corresponding to The ink can be discharged and a printed image can be formed.

Ratio of each ink in the print image (coverage), and the proportion of the amount of ink discharged during printing, ink amount sets of defined grid points in the color conversion profile CP (d c, d m, d y, d k , d g , d lc , d lm ) are reflected. Therefore, the ink amount sets of defined grid points in the color conversion profile CP (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) as well as the overall printing desired by the user Printing and printed images satisfying performance can be obtained. In other words, it is possible to realize the running cost of ink according to the user's expectation during printing, and in the printed image after printing, the graininess, color constancy, gradation and color reproduction gamut according to the user's expectation. Can be realized. Further, as described above, since printing can be performed with an ink set that the user wants to use, printing with high user satisfaction can be realized. Since an ink set that can ensure a color reproduction gamut appropriate for printing image data to be printed can be notified, an error in ink selection by the user can be prevented.

B. Various converters B-1. Spectral printing model converter spectral printing model converter CC is optional ink amount sets which can be used in the printer 20 of the embodiment (d c, d m, d y, d k, d lc, d lm, d lk, d llk a converter to predict d dy, d r, d o , d g, the spectral reflectance in the case of performing printing with d b) R (λ). The spectral printing model converter CC actually prints color patches at a plurality of representative points in the ink amount space, reads spectral reflectance data RD obtained by measuring the spectral reflectance R (λ) from the HDD 11, and uses it. To do. Then, by performing the prediction by the cellular Yule-Nielsen Spectral Neugebauer model which uses the spectral reflectivity data RD (Cellular Yule-Nielsen Spectral Neugebauer Model), exactly optional ink amount sets (d c, d m prediction d y, d k, d lc , d lm, d lk, d llk, d dy, d r, d o, d g, the spectral reflectance in the case of performing printing with d b) R a (lambda) To do.

FIG. 14 shows spectral reflectance data D. (It is a 13-dimensional in the present embodiment, illustrated only CM surface. For ease of illustration) spectral reflectance data D as shown in the figure ink amount space ink amount sets (d c of the plurality of lattice points in , d m, d y, d k, d lc, d lm, d lk, d llk, d dy, d r, d o, d g, spectral obtained by actual printing / measured d b) This is a lookup table in which the reflectance R (λ) is described. For example, five grid points that divide each ink amount axis equally are generated. Here 5 13 also lattice points are generated, it is necessary to print / measurement of color patches of huge amount, actually can be discharged simultaneously mountable ink number and simultaneously by the printer 20 ink Since the duty is limited, the number of grid points to be printed / measured is reduced.

Further, only some of the lattice points are actually printed / measured, and the other lattice points are spectrally reflected R (λ) based on the spectral reflectance R (λ) of the actually printed / measured lattice points. , The number of color patches that are actually printed / measured may be reduced. The spectral reflectance data RD needs to be prepared for each printing paper that can be printed by the printer 20. Strictly speaking, the spectral reflectance R (λ) is determined by the spectral transmittance of the ink film formed on the printing paper and the reflectance of the printing paper, and the surface physical properties (depending on the shape of the ink film) of the printing paper This is because it is greatly affected by the reflectance. Since the spectral reflectance meter is required for the creation of the spectral reflectance data RD, a general user cannot prepare the spectral reflectance data RD. Therefore, the manufacturer of the printer 20 prepares the spectral reflectance data RD in advance. Then, it is stored in the HDD 11 by installing the printer driver PD or the like. Next, prediction by the cell division Yule-Nielsen spectral Neugebauer model using the spectral reflectance data RD will be described.

The spectral printing model converter CC executes prediction based on the cell division Yule-Nielsen spectral Neugebauer model using the spectral reflectance data RD in response to a request from the profile creation unit PD6. In this prediction, first, a prediction condition is acquired from the profile creation unit PD6, and this prediction condition is set. Specifically, the spectral reflectance data RD created for the printing paper designated by the user in step S210 is set for use in prediction, and the ink set designated by the user is set for prediction in step S210. To do. In this embodiment, since glossy paper is selected, spectral reflectance data RD created by printing color patches on glossy paper is set. Because it is set CMYKGlclm as ink set, the ink amount d lk non CMYKGlclm, d llk, d dy, d r, to not use a d o (d lk = d llk = d dy = d r = d o = d b = 0). As a result, the work space for prediction of the spectral printing model converter CC is substantially reduced to six dimensions.

Spectral reflection when printed when it is set in the spectral reflectance data RD in the manner described above, optional ink amount sets (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) in The rate R (λ) is predicted. Ink amount set to be predicted (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) are sequentially input from the profile creation section PD6. For example, in the optimization in step S340, the ink amount set for each grid point (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) are inputted sequentially, eventually optimized each lattice point of the ink amount sets (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) so that the is input. Spectral printing model converter CC, the ink amount sets from the profile creation section PD6 (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) according to the input, the predicted spectral reflectance R (Λ) is passed to the color converter CC.

R Balasubramanian, Optimization of the spectral Neugebauer model for printer characterization, J. Electronic Imaging 8(2), 156-166 (1999)を参照。   The cell splitting Yule-Nielsen spectroscopic Neugebauer model is based on the well-known spectroscopic Neugebauer model and the Yule-Nielsen model. In the following description, for simplification of explanation, a model in the case of using three types of CMY inks will be described. However, a similar model was used using an arbitrary ink set including CMYKlclm and ORGBdylkllk of this embodiment. It is easy to extend to the model.

Figure 2008263579

FIG. 15 is a diagram showing a spectral Neugebauer model. The spectral Neugebauer model, optional ink amount sets (d c, d m, d y) spectral reflectance of the printed matter when printed with R (lambda) is given by the following equation (2).
Figure 2008263579

Here, a i is the area ratio of the i-th region, and R i (λ) is the spectral reflectance of the i-th region. The subscript i includes an area without ink (w), an area only with cyan ink (c), an area only with magenta ink (m), an area only with yellow ink (y), magenta ink and yellow ink. A region (r) where yellow ink and cyan ink are ejected, a region (b) where cyan ink and magenta ink are ejected, and a region where three inks CMY are ejected (region) (r) k) respectively. Further, f c , f m , and fy are the proportions of the area covered with only one CMY ink when it is ejected (referred to as “Ink area coverage”).

The ink coverages f c , f m , and fy are given by the Murray-Davis model shown in FIG. In the Murray-Davies model, for example, the ink area coverage f c of the cyan ink is a nonlinear function of the ink amount d c of the cyan, be converted to the ink amount d c in the ink coverage f c, for example by one-dimensional lookup table Can do. Ink coverage f c, f m, f y is the ink amount d c, d m, reason for the non-linear function of d y is spread enough ink in the case where a small amount of ink ejected to the unit area, This is because, when a large amount of ink is ejected, the ink is overlapped and the area covered with the ink does not increase so much. The same applies to other types of MY inks.

Figure 2008263579

When the Yule-Nielsen model for spectral reflectance is applied, the above equation (2) can be rewritten as the following equation (3a) or (3b).
Figure 2008263579

Here, n is a predetermined coefficient of 1 or more, and can be set to n = 10, for example. Expressions (3a) and (3b) are expressions representing the Yule-Nielsen Spectral Neugebauer Model.

The Cellular Yule-Nielsen Spectral Neugebauer Model adopted in the present embodiment is obtained by dividing the ink amount space of the above-described Yule-Nielsen Spectral Neugebauer Model into a plurality of cells. is there.

FIG. 16A shows an example of cell division in the cell division Yule-Nielsen spectroscopic Neugebauer model. Here, for simplification of description depicts the cell division in a two-dimensional ink amount space including two axes of the ink amount d c, d m of the CM inks. Note that it for ink coverage f c, is f m with at Murray-Davis model described above the ink amount d c, a unique relationship with d m, the ink coverage f c, also be considered as an axis indicating the f m . White circles are cell division grid points (called “nodes”), and a two-dimensional ink amount (coverage) space is divided into nine cells C1 to C9. The ink amount set (d c , d m ) corresponding to each node is an ink amount set corresponding to the lattice point defined in the spectral reflectance data RD. That is, the spectral reflectance R (λ) of each node can be obtained by referring to the spectral reflectance data RD described above. Therefore, the spectral reflectances R (λ) 00 , R (λ) 10 , R (λ) 20 ... R (λ) 33 of each node can be obtained from the spectral reflectance data RD.

In fact, it performs at seven-dimensional ink amount space of even the cell division CMYKGlclm In this embodiment, the ink amount sets (d c coordinates also the 7-dimensional nodes, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc , dlm ). Then, the ink amount set for each node (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) spectral reflectivity of the grid points corresponding to R (lambda) is the spectral reflectance data RD ( (From glossy paper). Incidentally, the spectral reflectance data RD, the ink amount set of lattice points in the ink amount space (d c, d m, d y, d k, d lc, d lm, d lk, d llk, d dy, d r, d o, d g, since the spectral reflectance of d b) R (λ) are described, the ink amount set CMYKGlclm (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d The spectral reflectance R (λ) of the node specified by lm ) can also be given.

Fig. 16 (B) shows the relationship between the ink area coverage f c and the ink amount d c which are used in the cell division model. Here, one kind of the ink amount in the range 0 to D cmax of ink is also divided into three sections, the virtual used in the cell division model by non-linear curve which increases monotonically from 0 for each section to the 1 A typical ink coverage fc is determined. For other inks, the ink coverages f m and f y are obtained in the same manner.

FIG. 16C shows a method of calculating the spectral reflectance R (λ) when printing is performed with an arbitrary ink amount set (d c , d m ) in the center cell C5 of FIG. Is shown. The spectral reflectance R (λ) when printing is performed with the ink amount set (d c , d m ) is given by the following equation (3).
Figure 2008263579

Here, the ink coverages f c and f m in the equation (4) are values given by the graph of FIG. The spectral reflectances R (λ) 11 , (λ) 12 , (λ) 21 , and (λ) 22 corresponding to the four nodes surrounding the cell C5 can be obtained by referring to the spectral reflectance data RD. it can. Thereby, all values constituting the right side of the equation (4) can be determined, and the spectral reflectance R when printing is performed with an arbitrary ink amount set (d c , d m ) as the calculation result. (Λ) can be calculated. The spectral reflectance R (λ) in the visible light region can be obtained by sequentially shifting the wavelength λ in the visible light region. If the ink amount space is divided into a plurality of cells, the spectral reflectance R (λ) of the sample can be calculated with higher accuracy than when the ink amount space is not divided. The predicted spectral reflectance R (λ) is output to the color converter CC. Next, the color converter CC will be described.

B-2. Color Converter FIG. 17 schematically shows a process in which the color converter CC specifies a color based on the spectral reflectance R (λ). In the figure, the spectrum of the reflected light from the printed material is predicted by multiplying the spectrum of the desired light source at each wavelength λ of the spectral reflectance R (λ) predicted by the spectral printing converter RC. In this embodiment, since D65 light is set, the spectrum of D65 light is used. Next, tristimulus values XYZ are calculated by convolving and normalizing sensitivity functions x (λ), y (λ), and z (λ) under a desired observation condition with respect to the spectrum of the reflected light. In this embodiment, unless otherwise indicated, the tristimulus values XYZ are calculated under the observation conditions of the CIE 1931 2 ° observer. Further, the color converter CC calculates the L * a * b * value of the CIELAB color system by applying the conversion formula of the CIE standard to the tristimulus values XYZ. In this way, by using the spectral printing converter RC and the color converter CC in sequence, the ink amount set (d c , d m , dy , d k , d g , d lc , d) requested by the profile creation unit PD6. lm ) can obtain the L * a * b * value when printing is performed, and the predicted L * a * b * value can be passed to the smoothness converter SC.

The CIECAM02 Color Appearance Model", Nathan Moroney et al., IS&T/SID Tenth Color Imaging Conference, pp.23-27, および、"The performance of CIECAM02", Changjun Li et al., IS&T/SID Tenth Color Imaging Conference, pp.28-31に記載されている。 Furthermore, the color converter CC can perform chromatic adaptation conversion on the tristimulus values XYZ. For example, by applying a chromatic adaptation conversion formula based on CIECAT02 to the tristimulus values XYZ calculated with D50 light, for example, L * a * expressing the appearance of color under D50 light with the corresponding color of D65 light b * value can be converted. Regarding CIECAT02, for example, “The CIECAM02 Color Appearance Model”, Nathan Moroney et al., IS & T / SID Tenth Color Imaging Conference, pp.23-27, and “The performance of CIECAM02”, Changjun Li et al., IS & T / SID Tenth Color Imaging Conference, pp.28-31. However, as the chromatic adaptation conversion, any other chromatic adaptation conversion such as von Kries's chromatic adaptation prediction formula may be used.

Figure 2008263579
The L * a * b * value obtained by this chromatic adaptation conversion is expressed as CV L1 → Ls . This subscript “L1 → Ls” means that the color appearance under the light source L1 is an L * a * b * value expressed by the corresponding color of the standard light source Ls. The color converter CC obtains color values CV L1 → Ls and CV L2 → Ls representing the appearance under at least two comparative light sources L1 and L2 with colors corresponding to the standard light source Ls, and based on these values. A color constancy index CII is calculated. In this embodiment, since the observation light source is set to D65 light in step S210, the standard light source Ls is set to D65 light. The comparison light sources L1 and L2 are, for example, D50 light and F11 light. The color constancy index CII can be calculated by, for example, the following formula (5).
Figure 2008263579

Billmeyer and Saltzman's Principles of Color Technology, 3rd edition, John Wiley & Sons, Inc, 2000, p.129,p. 213-215を参照。

Figure 2008263579
For color constancy index CII, see Billmeyer and Saltzman's Principles of Color Technology, 3rd edition, John Wiley & Sons, Inc, 2000, p. 129, p. 213-215. The right side of the equation (5) is the color difference ΔE * 94 (2 : Corresponds to 2). In the CIE 1994 color difference equation, the denominator coefficients SL, Sc, SH on the right side of the equation (5) are given by the following equation (6).
Figure 2008263579

In addition, as a color difference formula used for calculation of the color constancy index CII, other formulas can be used. The color constancy index CII is defined as the difference in color appearance when a color patch is observed under different viewing conditions. Therefore, an ink amount set that reduces the color constancy index CII when printed is preferable in that the difference in color appearance under different viewing conditions is small. In addition, since the color values CV L1 → Ls and CV L2 → Ls are the colorimetric values of the corresponding colors under the same standard observation conditions, the color constancy index CII, which is the color difference between them, is quite accurate in the difference in color appearance. It becomes the value expressed in. The color converter CC performs L * a when printing is performed with the ink amount set (d c , d m , dy , d k , d g , d lc , d lm ) requested by the profile creation unit PD6. Along with the * b * value, the color constancy index CII is also returned to the profile creation unit PD6. Next, the granularity converter GC and its preparation will be described.

B-3. Ink amount set (d c graininess converter graininess converter GC is the profile creation section PD6 requesting prediction, d m, d y, d k, d lc, d lm, d lk, d llk, d dy, d r , D o , d g , d b ), the graininess index GI is predicted when printing is performed, and the graininess index GI is returned to the profile creation unit PD6. In the present embodiment, in order to use only the printing CMYKGlclm, other ink amount is always d lk = d llk = d dy = d r = d o = d b = 0 is input. The ink amount d c of all ink neural network NNG be used for printing, d m, d y, d k, d lc, d lm, d lk, d llk, d dy, d r, d o, d g , by keeping a d b a possible input structure, it is possible to obtain the graininess index GI in any ink set used for printing by inputting a quantity of ink not used for printing as 0.

FIG. 18 shows a neural network NNG. In the figure, the ink amount d c of the ink, d m, d y, d k, d lc, d lm, d lk, d llk, d dy, d r, d o, d g, d b is a neural network It is possible to input to the input layer of NNG, and it is possible to output the granularity generation number GI in the output layer. Such, by preparing in advance a neural network NNG in HDD 11, the ink amount set which is requested profile creation section PD5 (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) Can be converted into the granularity generation number GI, and the granularity generation number GI can be returned to the profile creation unit PD5.

Figure 2008263579

粒状性指数GIについては、例えば、Makoto Fujino,Image Quality Evaluation of Inkjet Prints, Japan Hardcopy '99, p.291-294を参照。 The graininess index GI is defined by the following equation (7).
Figure 2008263579

For the graininess index GI, see, for example, Makoto Fujino, Image Quality Evaluation of Inkjet Prints, Japan Hardcopy '99, p.291-294. In Equation (7), a L is a brightness correction term, WS (u) is a winner spectrum of an image, VTF is a visual spatial frequency characteristic, and u is a spatial frequency.

In the above equation (7), the graininess index GI obtains a power spectrum of spatial waves existing in the image by performing Fourier transform on the image plane of the image data obtained by imaging the color patch with a scanner or the like, and On the other hand, it is calculated by convolving the visual spatial frequency characteristic VTF. In general, lightness image data is used as the image data. Thus, it can be said that the graininess index GI is a value obtained by accumulating the magnitude of the spatial wave of brightness existing in the color patch with respect to all the spatial frequencies in consideration of the weighting by the spatial frequency characteristic VTF. Therefore, it is possible to quantify the noticeable graininess. The contribution of the overall brightness to the graininess index GI is reduced by the brightness correction term a L.

Typical ink amount sets (d c in the ink amount space of CMYKlclmlkllkORGBdy ink may be used for printing, d m, d y, d k, d lc, d lm, d lk, d llk, d dy, d r, d o , d g , d b ) is actually printed with color patches, and the granularity index GI is calculated by the above equation (7), thereby preparing learning data of the neural network NNG. Then, by performing learning using the learning data, the number of layers, the number of intermediate units, the weighting factors, and the bias for determining the structure of the neural network NNG shown in FIG. 18 are sequentially optimized. In learning of the neural network NNG, the back pro vacation method is generally used. Note that. In the present embodiment, the neural network NNG capable of inputting all types of ink amounts is illustrated, but an individual neural network NNG may be prepared for each ink set. In this embodiment, the neural network NNG is prepared in the HDD 11 by installing the printer driver PD, and can be used by the graininess converter GC. The graininess converter GC returns the obtained graininess index GI to the profile creation unit PD6.

B-4. Smoothness Converter FIG. 19 schematically illustrates the smoothness degree evaluation index SI calculated by the smoothness converter SC. The smoothness converter SC performs a process of evaluating the degree of smoothness of the color in the CIELAB color space when the profile creation unit PD6 prints with the ink amount set of the grid points requested to be predicted. In the present embodiment, the smoothness converter SC uses the color converter when the L * a * b * value when the color when printed with the ink amount set of the grid points requested by the profile creation unit PD6 is observed with D65 light is the color converter. The level of smoothness in the CIELAB color space of the L * a * b * values input from the CC is quantified.

Figure 2008263579

In the figure, ◯ indicates the position of a plurality of lattice points in the CIELAB space, and ● indicates the lattice point of interest (the lattice point for which the evaluation function Ep is calculated) among the lattice points. When the position vector of the lattice point of interest is Lp and the position vectors of the six lattice points adjacent to the lattice point are L a1 to La 6 , the smoothness degree evaluation index SI is expressed by the following equation (8). .
Figure 2008263579

The smoothness degree evaluation index SI is set such that the distance between vectors in the opposite direction from the lattice point of interest is equal, and the value becomes smaller as the direction is closer to the opposite direction.

As shown in FIG. 19B, lines connecting adjacent lattice points (such as lines passing through the lattice points indicated by the vector L a1 to the vector L p to the vector L a2 ) are close to a straight line, and the lattice points are evenly arranged. Since the arrangement of the lattice points in the CIELAB color space tends to be smoothed as the degree of smoothness increases, the degree of smoothness increases as the smoothness degree evaluation index SI shown in Equation (8) decreases. L * a * b * values in the CIELAB color space, the ink amount set of the present embodiment (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) spectroscopy a printing model converter RC and the color The smoothness degree evaluation index SI can be said to be a function of the ink amount set since it can be obtained by performing sequential conversion by the converter CC. As the smoothness degree evaluation index SI is smaller, better gradation can be expected. After calculating the smoothness evaluation index SI, the smoothness converter SC returns the smoothness evaluation index SI to the profile creation unit PD6.

FIG. 20 shows a color reproduction gamut in the CIELAB color space when the printer 20 performs printing with the ink set CMYKOlclm of the present embodiment. As shown in the figure, the color reproduction gamut of the printer 20 is determined in advance by the hardware specifications of the printer 20 and the ink set, and colors can be reproduced within this range. The smoothness converter SC acquires the color reproduction gamut from the color reproduction gamut data GD of the HDD 11, and the L * a * b * value on the outer surface, the ridgeline, or the vertex of the color reproduction gamut and the color converter CC calculate it. The color difference ΔE from the L * a * b * values of some grid points is calculated.

The calculation target of the color difference ΔE is assumed to be at the outer edge of the ink amount space among the grid points, and the color difference ΔE = 0 is set for the inner grid point. This is because L * a * b * values obtained by converting lattice points existing at the outer edge of the ink amount space by the spectral printing model converter RC are also considered to exist at the outer edge in the CIELAB space. As a result, the outer surface of the color reproduction gamut that can be reproduced by the printer 20 with the L * a * b * values obtained by sequentially converting the lattice points existing at the outer edge of the ink amount space by the spectral printing model converter RC and the color converter CC. The color shift up to the top, ridgeline, or top can be quantified. The smoothness converter SC returns the color difference ΔE to the profile creation unit PD6, and the color difference ΔE is used for optimization.

This color difference ΔE is added to the evaluation function E p of Equation (1), and by optimizing the evaluation function E p so as to minimize it (step S340), the outer edge grid points in the CIELAB color space are reproduced. It moves so as to approach the outer surface of gamut, the ridgeline, and the apex. As a result, the ink profile IP and the color conversion profile CP that make maximum use of the color reproduction gamut can be created. On the other hand, since the color difference ΔE = 0 is set for the lattice point inside the color reproduction gamut, it is not restricted by a specific color in the CIELAB color space. However, by optimizing so that the evaluation function E p obtained by adding the smoothness degree evaluation index SI is minimized, each grid point is moved so as to be distributed smoothly inside the color reproduction gamut described above. Can do.

In this embodiment, since the color indicated by each pixel of the image data to be printed is within the color reproduction gamut of the printer 20 when CMYKGlclm is used, it is confirmed in the ink set setting process in step S100. Except when the ignore button is pressed in S180, the color indicated by each pixel of the image data to be printed is basically in the color reproduction gamut shown in FIG. In this way, in the optimization in step 340, the grid points in the CIELAB color space are optimized. Although it cannot be visualized in the CIELAB color space in FIG. 20, the lattice points in the CIELAB color space are optimized, and at the same time, in step S340, other graininess index GI, color constancy index CII, and ink running cost are calculated. even better it becomes as ink amount sets (d c, d m, d y, d k, d g, d lc, d lm) is to be optimized.

C. Summary and Modification C-1. Modification 1
As described in section A, in the present invention, the profile creation unit PD6 creates the color conversion profile CP corresponding to the ink set used for printing. At this time, an ink set having a color reproduction gamut including the color indicated by each pixel of the image data to be printed is selected, and a color conversion profile CP is created for the ink set. The color indicated by the pixel can be accurately reproduced. Further, in the above-described embodiment, by receiving image data to be printed from the user, a request for print performance indicating that a color reproduction gamut should be secured for a color indicated by a pixel included in the image data is indirectly received. Can be considered. Accordingly, it can be considered that the process of step S110 for accepting designation of image data to be printed corresponds to the process executed by the request accepting means of the present invention. Similarly, it can be said that the ink set setting unit PD4 that selects an ink set so as to ensure a color reproduction gamut as a printing performance corresponds to a selection unit of the present invention.

In the above-described embodiment, the created color conversion profile CP may be deleted by a user instruction. In addition, color conversion is performed using the color conversion profile CP created based on the ink profile IP. However, the image data is generated using the source profile related to the color space of the input image data and the ink profile IP. May be converted into image data of the ink amount. Further, the color conversion profile CP created in the present invention is not limited to the one describing the relationship between the ink amount and the sRGB color space, but the relationship between the ink amount and the Lab color space (the ink profile IP of the above embodiment). Or a relationship between the ink amount and another color space, such as a relationship between the ink amount and the XYZ color space. By the way, when the weight coefficient w 4 is small, the constraint force on the outer surface, the ridgeline, and the vertex of the color reproduction gamut of the grid point in step S340 is weakened, so that it is actually more than the color reproduction gamut indicated by the color reproduction gamut data GD. It is also conceivable that the color reproduction gamut indicated by the created ink profile IP becomes narrower. Therefore, when the ink profile IP is created, it may be confirmed that the color reproduction gamut of the ink profile IP is not narrower than the color gamut of the color indicated by each pixel of the image data to be printed.

FIG. 21 shows how the distribution area of the grid points of the ink profile IP optimized (after step S340) and the distribution area of the color of the image data to be printed are compared in the CIELAB color space. As shown in the figure, when the distribution area of the lattice points of the actually created ink profile IP is wider, the color of the image data to be printed can be sufficiently expressed. Conversely, when the distribution area of the grid points of the actually created ink profile IP is narrower, the color reproduction gamut can be created so that an ink profile IP can be created that makes maximum use of the color reproduction gamut in the current ink set. It is desirable to re-create the ink profile IP by upwardly correcting the weighting factor w 4 for the ink profile IP.

In the above-described embodiment, if the color reproduction gamut of the printer 20 is an ink set that is wider than the color gamut of the image data, it is determined that the ink set is suitable for printing the image data. The requirement for determining the ink set may be strict. For example, only an ink set in which the color reproduction gamut of the printer 20 is slightly wider than the color space of image data (sRGB color space in the above embodiment) and has substantially the same shape is selected as an appropriate ink set. You can also make it. By doing this, it is possible to narrow down the ink set in which the color reproduction gamut of the printer 20 is wider than the color gamut of the image data, and to suppress the correction amount of the color near the outer edge of the color reproduction gamut by gamut mapping. be able to. Therefore, it is effective when the printer 20 wants to reproduce the color of the original image data. Furthermore, when there are a plurality of ink sets having a color reproduction gamut coverage of 100%, these ink sets may be shown to the user and the selection may be accepted. Furthermore, it is assumed that weighting factors w 1 to w 5 are set in advance, and creation of a color conversion profile CP is started when an ink set with a color reproduction gamut coverage of 100% is detected. Also good. When only one ink set having a color reproduction gamut coverage of 100% is detected, the creation of a color conversion profile CP for the ink set may be started at that time. On the other hand, when a plurality of ink sets are detected, ink sets may be selected in a predetermined priority order based on the coverage ratio, the number of inks, and the like, and the creation of the color conversion profile CP may be started sequentially.

FIG. 22 shows the configuration of a printer as a printing apparatus that executes the printing control of the present invention. In the figure, the firmware FW of the printer 120 is configured to execute the modules PD1 to PD8 of the printer driver. Then, the printer 120 can select an ink set suitable for the image data designated as a print target, and can perform printing with a suitable color reproduction gamut using the selected ink set. As described above, the present invention can also be realized in a direct printer capable of printing with the printer 120 alone.

C-2. Modification 2
In the above, the embodiment in which the ink set to be used is selected according to the request regarding the color reproduction gamut as the printing performance has been exemplified, but the ink set may be selected according to the request regarding other printing performance. . For example, a user request regarding graininess, gradation, color constancy, and the like may be received, and an ink set may be selected according to the request. Hereinafter, a modified example in which the ink set setting unit PD4 selects an ink set to be used in response to a user request regarding graininess will be described in detail.

FIG. 23 shows the flow of an ink set setting process according to this modification. In step S1110, the UI unit PD1 displays a UI screen on the display 30 and receives a print instruction via the keyboard 40a and the mouse 40b. The image data acquisition unit PD2 receives image data to be printed, such as the HDD 11 or the like. Obtain from another application program. In the next step S1120, a display for accepting a request for graininess from the user is performed. The ink set setting unit PD4 that executes the ink set setting process constitutes a request receiving unit and a selection unit of the present invention.

FIG. 24 shows an example of a UI screen displayed in step S1120. In the figure, “Do you want to use ink that suppresses graininess? Is displayed, and a check box is provided for indicating this request (“Yes”, “No”). When the check box is checked, a check box that accepts the following selections a to c for the target color designation method becomes valid.
a. Specify by image color b. Specify with color chart c. Specify by color value

ここで、a. In step S1120, each designation of the user on the UI screen is acquired in response to clicking of the determination button. In step S1130, “Do you want to use ink that suppresses graininess? "Yes" in the check box corresponding to the message "" is checked. If "No" is checked, the process proceeds to step S190 of the ink set setting process (FIG. 4) of the previous embodiment. move on. That is, printing is performed using the currently installed ink set. On the other hand, if it is checked, the above-mentioned a to c. Which of these is specified is determined. Where: a. Is designated, in step S1150, a UI screen for accepting the designation of the target color according to the color of the image is displayed.

FIG. 25 shows a UI screen displayed in step S1150. In the figure, an image preview area is provided, and a predetermined sample image is displayed in the image preview area. This sample image may be image data designated in advance as a print target, or may be sample image data stored in the HDD 11 when the printer driver PD is installed. In addition, the user may be allowed to select what sample image is displayed. For example, the user may be inquired whether a landscape photo sample is good or a human photo sample is good. In the UI screen above, “Select the color you want to suppress graininess with the pointer. Is displayed, and a pointer whose position varies according to the operation of the mouse 40b is displayed in the image preview area.

A rectangular area can be designated by the drag position and drop position of the pointer. In step S1160, the average value of the colors included in the designated rectangular area is calculated. Here, the RGB value of the rectangular area output from the video I / F 15 to the display 30 is acquired, and the RGB value is converted into an L * a * b * value using the ICC profile (sRGB profile SP) of the display 30. Convert. Then, the average value of the L * a * b * values for the rectangular area is acquired as the target color. In this way, the target color can be specified intuitively. For example, when it is desired to suppress empty graininess, an empty area may be simply specified. The area for specifying the target color is not limited to a rectangle, and a circle or the like may be adopted, or a plurality of areas may be specified.

On the other hand, in step S1120, b. Is specified, a UI screen for receiving the identification number of the color patch (color sample) is displayed in step S1170. The color patch identification number is a number specific to each color patch printed together with each color patch in a color chart (not shown), and the color patch color specified by the user is uniquely specified by inputting the identification number. It is possible. The HDD 11 is provided with a database storing the correspondence between the identification number and the color value (L * a * b * value) for each color patch, and the L * a * specified by the user by receiving the identification number . The b * value can be acquired as the target color. Note that the color chart is provided in advance by the manufacturer of the printer 20 or the like, and a plurality of color patches with colors are arranged so as to cover the entire color reproduction gamut that the printer 20 can reproduce. In this modification, the color chart is provided as a print medium. However, it is sufficient that a plurality of color patches can be presented to the user, the color chart is displayed on the display 30, and designation is accepted by the mouse 40b. It may be.

On the other hand, in step S1120, c. If you but is specified, to display the color value in step S1180 the (L * a * b * value) UI screen for input specification (text box), the input L * a * b * values Get as target color. As described above, when the L * a * b * value is acquired as the target color in steps S1160, S1170, and S1180, the UI screen for accepting the restriction on the ink to be used is displayed in step S1190.

FIG. 26 shows the UI screen displayed in step S1190. In the figure, “Is there any ink you want to use? Is displayed, and a check box for giving an instruction corresponding to this message is provided. When the check box is checked, a check box for checking all inks that can be used is enabled. “Is there any ink you don't want to use? Is displayed, and a check box for giving an instruction corresponding to this message is also provided. When the check box is checked, a check box for checking all inks that can be used is enabled. As a result, ink that the user does not have can be excluded from the use target. In step S1200, a user instruction on the UI screen is acquired.

In step S1210, an ink set that can be used under the restriction acquired in step S1200 is specified. For example, when K ink is designated as the ink that is desired to be used and lkllkdy ink is designated as the ink that is not desired to be used, the ink always includes K ink and is composed of a combination of CMYKORGBlclm inks other than lkllkdy ink Sets ( 29 sets) are identified. In step S1220, the ink amount set that is the L * a * b * value of the target color acquired in steps S1160, S1170, and S1180 is specified. In specifying the ink amount set, the color converter CC and the spectral printing model converter RC described in the section B are used. In section B, a spectral reflectance R (λ) is calculated from an arbitrary ink amount set, and a spectral distribution of a predetermined light source is applied to the spectral reflectance R (λ) to thereby calculate L * a under the light source. The procedure for calculating the * b * value has been described. In step S1220, an ink amount set capable of reproducing the L * a * b * value of the target color is calculated.

For example, all the ink amount sets that can be supplied by each ink set identified in step S1210 are sequentially substituted into the spectral printing model converter RC and the color converter CC, and only the ink amount set that becomes the L * a * b * value of the target color. Is identified. At this time, the K ink designated as the ink that the user wants to use is limited to use the ink (d k ≠ 0), and the lklkdy ink designated as the ink that the user does not want to use. the restricted to use no ink (and d lk = d llk = d dy = 0.) and thus. The light source used in step S1220 may be designated by the user, or a standard light source may be applied. In step S1230, the ink amount set specified in step S1220 is substituted into the graininess converter GC (neural network NNG), and the graininess index GI when printing with the ink amount set is calculated.

FIG. 27 lists the graininess index GI calculated in step S1230. In the figure, a plurality of ink amount sets capable of reproducing the L * a * b * values of the target color are specified, and the graininess index GI is calculated for each of them. In step S1240, the ink quantity set listed is identified as having the smallest granularity index GI. This makes it possible to specify the ink amount set in which the granularity is most suppressed among the ink amount sets in which the L * a * b * values of the target color can be reproduced. Here, the graininess index GI as the printing performance is predicted for each ink amount set listed in FIG. 27, and printing is performed by an ink set including at least an ink whose ink amount is not 0 in each ink amount set. It can be said that the graininess index GI is predicted. In step S1250, an ink set that can provide the ink amount set that suppresses the most granular feeling specified in step S1240 is specified. For example, as shown in FIG. 27, when the ink amount set with the most suppressed graininess is composed of non-zero CMYKlclm ink amounts, an ink set including at least CMYKlclm as a component can provide the ink amount set. Applicable to ink set.

Since the printer 20 can mount eight ink cartridges 22 at the same time, an ink set obtained by adding any 0 to 2 types of inks to CMYKlclm is specified as an ink set that can provide the ink amount set. . However, the ink designated as the ink that the user does not want to use in step S1190 is limited to be excluded from the components of the ink set. In the above-described example, lkllkdy ink is excluded from the components of the ink set. In step S1260, it is determined whether there are a plurality of ink sets specified in step S1250. If there is a single ink set, the ink set specified in step S1250 is finally selected as an ink set to be used for printing as it is. (Step S1270). For example, when the ink amount set that suppresses the graininess most is composed of eight types of ink amounts that are not 0, the ink amount set can be provided by a single ink set. On the other hand, if there are a plurality of ink sets specified in step S1250, a UI screen for allowing the user to select any one of the ink sets selected in step S1250 is displayed (step S1280). In step S1290, the user accepts designation of an ink set, and selects the designated ink set as an ink set to be finally used for printing.

When the ink set is finally selected as described above, the color conversion profile creation guideline setting process (step S200 in FIG. 8) is executed as in the above-described embodiment, and further the color conversion profile CP creation process ( Step S300 in FIG. 11 is sequentially executed. By doing in this way, it is possible to execute printing with an ink set that can suppress graininess for the target color specified by the user. In addition, since it is possible to reflect the restriction of ink that the user wants to use / does not want to use, an ink set that matches the user's intention can be used for printing.

In the above, the embodiment has been described in which the ink amount set capable of reproducing the target color is narrowed down in advance, and the ink amount set that can suppress the graininess most is selected from those. The degree of ink may be evaluated at the same time, and an ink amount set having a good degree of approximation to the target color and a good degree of granularity may be specified. The evaluation function E P given by the above equation (1) is an index value that can simultaneously evaluate the graininess, color constancy, gradation, color reproduction gamut, and running cost. Using P , the degree of approximation to the target color and the degree of graininess suppression can be evaluated simultaneously. Specifically, in the above equation (1), the weighting factors w 2 , w 3 , and w 5 for color constancy, gradation, and running cost are all set to 0, and the graininess and color reproduction gamut are determined. setting the weighting factor w 1, w 4 of the both 0.5, for example. In Section B-4, in order to secure the color reproduction gamut, the color difference ΔE for the color on the outer surface and the edge of the color reproduction gamut is used, but here the user specifies that the graininess should be suppressed. The color difference ΔE with respect to the target color is used. Thereby, it can be evaluated by the evaluation function E P whether or not the color when printing with an arbitrary ink amount set φ approximates the target color.

When the evaluation function E P can be prepared as described above, the ink amount set φ that minimizes the evaluation function E P is calculated. For example, an optimal solution of the ink amount set φ that minimizes the evaluation function E P can be calculated by a conjugate gradient method or the like. Accordingly, it is possible to calculate the ink amount set φ in which the degree of approximation to the target color and the degree of granularity suppression are the best. As described above, when the ink amount set φ as the minimum solution can be calculated, the ink set that can be provided by the ink amount set φ is specified. The process here is the same as in step S1250 described above. That is, an ink set including at least an ink having a non-zero value in the ink amount set φ obtained as a minimal solution may be specified. In this case as well, when a plurality of ink sets are specified, the user may select them. In this way, the processing can be simplified by simultaneously evaluating the degree of approximation to the target color and the degree of graininess suppression using the evaluation function E P.

By the way, when the user requests to suppress graininess in the ink set setting process, it can be determined that the user expects printing that suppresses graininess, and the color conversion profile creation guideline to be executed next is executed. Also in the setting process (step S200 in FIG. 8), it is desirable to set a creation guideline for the color conversion profile CP with an emphasis on graininess. That is, it is desirable to set a large weighting factor w 1 for graininess in the evaluation function E P used in the color conversion profile CP creation process (step S300 in FIG. 11). Thus, an ink set that can suppress graininess is selected for the target color, and a color conversion profile CP that can be printed by an ink amount set that can suppress graininess in the ink set can be created. Furthermore, since the color on which graininess should be emphasized is also clarified by the designation of the target color, the graininess may be suppressed particularly in the vicinity of the target color. For example, in the evaluation function E P used in the process of creating the color conversion profile CP (step S300 in FIG. 11), if the weighting factor w 1 for graininess is increased in the color gamut near the target color, the target It is possible to create a color conversion profile CP that can suppress graininess especially in the vicinity of colors.

In the above, an example of the ink set setting process when a request for printing performance to suppress graininess has been received is shown, but it is also possible to select an ink set based on a request for other printing performance It is. For example, it is possible to accept a request for printing performance to improve gradation, find an ink amount set that minimizes an evaluation function E P in which a weighting factor w 3 for gradation is set large, and the ink It is also possible to select an ink set that can supply a quantity set. Similarly, an ink set that emphasizes running cost and color constancy can be selected.
