  The present invention relates to a recording / reproducing apparatus, and more specifically to a recording / reproducing apparatus that copies or moves image data between recording media.

Therefore, it is desirable to erase necessary data after copying (dubbing) it to another storage medium such as a memory card or DVD. At this time, a means for easily searching for a desired content to be saved (dubbed) from a large number of contents is desired.   The file transfer device 28 reads from the recording medium 12 an image file that contains the image specified by the selected image information from the selection device 26 and transfers it to the external recording medium 32.

  In step S3, it is determined whether or not the external recording medium 32 that cannot be additionally written can be released to the additionally recordable state. If cancellation is possible, the process proceeds to step S4. If it is not possible to cancel, including a shortage of remaining amount, it cannot be used as a dubbing destination medium, so that the user is notified and the process is terminated.

  In step S5, the image recorded on the external recording medium 32 is analyzed and features are extracted. There are various methods for feature extraction by image analysis. When a plurality of extraction methods are installed, means for selecting an extraction method may be provided so that the extraction method to be applied can be selected.   When selecting one image file as a file for feature extraction, the user may select it, or it may be automatically selected according to a predetermined condition such as a file with the latest recording date and time.

  In step S6, search conditions for similar image search are determined from the appearance frequency and relevance of the feature information of each image extracted in step S5. Here, ranking is performed in descending order of appearance frequency of subjects, and subjects with a certain threshold value or more are determined as subjects for the search condition.

  In step S7, the image recorded on the recording medium 12 as the dubbing source is analyzed and features are extracted. The feature extraction method by image analysis here is the same as that employed in step S5.

  In step S8, by comparing the feature search condition determined in step S6 with the feature extracted in step S7, an image similar to the subject recorded in the dubbing destination medium 32 among the images of the dubbing source medium 12 is obtained.   If the images recorded on the recording medium 12 and the external recording medium 32 have additional information such as recording date and time or shooting information, this additional information can be used for feature comparison in step S8.

  In the present embodiment, a DVD disk has been described as an example of a recording medium as a dubbing destination, but other recording media that can be additionally recorded may be used.
