無端状の中間転写ベルトと、該中間転写ベルトに沿って一列に配列された複数の作像ユニットと、二次転写位置において前記中間転写ベルト上のトナー像を搬送路に沿って搬送される用紙に転写する二次転写手段と、装置側面部に設けられた手差し給紙部と、画像データに応じ各作像ユニットの像担持体上に静電潜像を形成する露光装置とを備え、
前記作像ユニットは、像担持体と、該像担持体を帯電させる帯電手段と、帯電後の前記像担持体上に形成された静電潜像を現像してトナー像を形成する現像手段と、一次転写位置において前記像担持体上のトナー像を前記中間転写ベルト上に転写する一次転写手段とを有し、前記手差し給紙部における給紙開始位置から搬送路に沿って二次転写位置に至る搬送経路よりも、前記複数の作像ユニットのうち二次転写位置から見て最も遠い位置にある作像ユニットの像担持体の露光位置から像担持体表面に沿って一次転写位置を経由して中間転写ベルトの下部平面に沿って二次転写位置に至る経路の方が短くなるように構成され、
