Abstract
【課題】本発明は、発光効率及び輝度特性を向上させることができるプラズマディスプレイパネル及びその駆動方法を提供するためのものである。
【解決手段】本発明は、前面基板に形成された第1表示電極と、前記第1表示電極と交差する方向に後面基板に形成された第2表示電極と、前記後面基板に前記第2表示電極に平行するように形成されたアドレス電極とを含むことを特徴とする。

Description
本発明は、プラズマディスプレイパネル及びその駆動方法に関する。
一般に、プラズマディスプレイパネルは、隔壁で区画された放電セル(Cell)内に蛍光体層を含み、放電セルに駆動信号が印加できるように複数の電極(Electrode)を備える。
このようなプラズマディスプレイパネルは、放電セルに駆動信号を印加すれば、放電セル内に充填されている放電ガスが真空紫外線(Vacuum Ultraviolet rays)を発生する。このような真空紫外線が放電セル内に形成された蛍光体を発光させて映像を具現する。
本発明は、発光効率及び輝度特性を向上させることができるプラズマディスプレイパネル及びその駆動方法を提供することをその目的とする。
本発明の一実施形態によれば、プラズマディスプレイパネルは、前面基板に形成された第1表示電極、第1表示電極と交差する方向に後面基板に形成された第2表示電極、及び後面基板に前記第2表示電極に平行するように形成されたアドレス電極を含む。
アドレス電極は1つの放電セル内で前記第2表示電極の両側に平行するように形成されることを特徴とする。
第1表示電極は1つの放電セル内で突出部を含むことを特徴とする。
本発明の他の実施形態によれば、プラズマディスプレイパネルの駆動方法は、第1表示電極が形成された前面基板と、第1表示電極と交差する方向に第2表示電極が形成された後面基板と、第1表示電極と第2表示電極が交差して形成された1つの放電セル内で第2表示電極の両側に平行するように形成された2つのアドレス電極とを含むプラズマディスプレイパネルにおいて、第2表示電極にリセット期間の間、リセットパルスを印加するステップ、第1表示電極にアドレス期間の間、スキャンパルスを印加して、アドレス電極に各々データパルスを同時に印加するステップ、第1表示電極及び第2表示電極にサステイン期間の間、サステインパルスを交互に供給するステップを含む。
アドレス電極に印加されるデータパルスの基準電位はグラウンド以下であることを特徴とする。
本発明によれば、発光効率及び輝度特性が向上したプラズマディスプレイパネルを得ることができる。
図1は、本発明の一実施形態に係るプラズマディスプレイパネルの斜視図である。
図1を参照すれば、プラズマディスプレイパネルは、前面パネル110と、前面パネル110に平行するように位置した後面パネル120とからなる。
前面パネル110は前面基板111上に平行するように配列された第1表示電極(Y)を含み、後面パネル120は後面基板121の上に表示電極(Y)に垂直な方向に配列されたアドレス電極(A)と第2表示電極(X)とを含む。
このような前面パネル110と後面パネル120には複数の第1表示電極とアドレス電極及び第2表示電極が行及び列で配列される。
第1表示電極(Y)は単一層のバス電極でのみ構成されることができるが、図示したように、インジウムスズ酸化物(indium tin oxide;ITO)とのような透明電極からなる導電膜113と、透明導電膜113が有する高い抵抗を補完するために透明導電膜の縁に沿ってクロムまたは銀のような導電性金属で形成されるバス電極114とを含む。
このような第1表示電極(Y)は、プラズマディスプレイパネル駆動の際、映像を前面パネルに表すためのスキャン用電極である。
第1表示電極(Y)上には普通厚さ30μm程度の低融点ガラスからなる誘電体層112が塗布され、その表面には酸化マグネシウムのような保護層115が蒸着される。
後面基板に形成された第2表示電極(X)は、第1表示電極(Y)と同様に透明電極とバス電極を含むことができるが、図示したように、バス電極である単一層で形成される。また、アドレス電極(A)やはりバス電極である単一層からなる。
アドレス電極(A)と第2表示電極(X)上には、通常厚さ10μmの誘電体層122が塗布され、その誘電体層の上に約150μm高さの隔壁123が第2表示電極(X)及びアドレス電極(A)と平行した方向に配列される。
これらの隔壁123は放電空間を形成する。
隔壁により形成された放電セル構造は、ストライプ構造に限定されず、前述した本発明の電極配置が受容できる他の隔壁構造、例えばワッフル(waffle)構造、または、ミアンダー(meander)構造の放電セル構造で表れることができる。
誘電体層122及び隔壁123の上には、各々赤色、緑色及び青色の蛍光体層125R、125G、125Bが形成される。蛍光体層125R、125G、125Bは前記隔壁123上のみに提供されることができ、これとは異に、前記蛍光体層125R、125G、125Bを荷電粒子の衝突から保護するための追加の保護層(図示していない)が前記蛍光体層125R、125G、125Bの上に提供されることができる。
また、前面パネル110と後面パネル120との間の放電空間には、プラズマ放電のための放電ガスが充填され、隔壁により形成された単位ピクセルはR、G、Bサブピクセルに分けられる。
このようなプラズマディスプレイパネルは、図示してはいないが、各電極を駆動する駆動部により駆動される。
図2a乃至図2dは、本発明の一実施形態に係るプラズマディスプレイパネルの放電セルで電極の形状及び配置構造に対する種々の例を示す図である。
図2a乃至図2dを説明すれば、プラズマディスプレイパネルの電極は一定間隔(h)だけ離隔した両基板(F、R)に第1表示電極(X)、第2表示電極(Y)及びアドレス電極(A)が配置される。このような両基板(F、R)は横及び縦の長さが各々d1及びd2である平面と定義することができ、この平面はPDPを構成する放電セルの2次元的な規格に対応する。前記各基板の長さ(d1、d2)は通常のPDPセルサイズによって設計されることができる。
1つの平面(F)上には第1表示電極(Y)が配置され、他の平面(R)には第2表示電極(X)及びアドレス電極(A)が配置される。
この場合、第2表示電極(X)及びアドレス電極(A)は同一平面上に配置されないこともできる。
第1表示電極(Y)は、透明電極113と金属電極であるバス電極114とを含み、図2c及び図2dのように、透明電極は1つの放電セル内で突出部113aを含むことができる。このような突出部はプラズマディスプレイパネル駆動の際、放電領域を大きくして放電効率を向上させることができる。
第2表示電極は金属電極だけでなされることができる。また、第2表示電極は透明電極と金属電極を含むことができ、この場合、透明電極は図2dのように、1つの放電セル内で突出部113aを含むことができる。
第1表示電極(Y)と第2表示電極(X)に含まれた透明電極の幅はプラズマディスプレイパネルの全体で一定の幅が維持できるが、放電セル内に形成された蛍光体の種類によって異なる幅を有することができる。
アドレス電極と第2表示電極(X)は所定距離(w1)離隔し、この場合、離隔距離は50μm以下である。
第1表示電極(Y)と第2表示電極(X)との間の距離は、プラズマディスプレイパネル駆動の際、陽光柱領域を用いてプラズマ放電が生じられるように、少なくとも隔壁の高さより大きく形成し、好ましくは100μm以上500μm以下にする。
このような電極形状及び電極配置構造を有するプラズマディスプレイパネルは、プラズマ放電の際、放電効率を向上させることができる。
図3は、本発明の一実施形態に係るプラズマディスプレイパネルの駆動方法を説明するための図である。
図示したように、プラズマディスプレイパネルの駆動方法は、まずアドレス区間でアドレス電極(A)に加えられた正のアドレスパルス(Pa)及び第1表示電極(Y)に加えられた負のスキャンパルス(Ps)により放電が発生してセルが選択される。
選択されたセルには第1表示電極(Y)とアドレス電極(A)との間にアドレス放電が発生して、アドレス電極(A)の上には負の電荷が、第1表示電極(Y)の上には正の電荷が蓄積される。
また、図示してはいないが、アドレス区間で第1表示電極(Y)とアドレス電極(A)との間に発生する対向放電の際、壁電圧の形成を容易にするために両電極の基準電位を異にすることができる。
次に、維持放電区間では、第2表示電極(X)と第1表示電極(Y)との間に交互に放電電圧より低い電圧の維持パルス(Psus)が加えられ、これによって、アドレス区間で選択されたセルは放電を維持することになる。
リセット区間では、以前の維持区間で維持放電が生じていた画素内の壁電圧の状態を消えたセル(Off-cell)の壁電荷状態と同一にする。例えば、維持放電が終わる時点で第1表示電極(Y)にプリリセットパルス(pre-reset pulse)を印加し、次に第2表示電極(X)にランプ波形を印加する方式でリセット動作がなされることができる。
図4は、本発明の一実施形態に係る他のプラズマディスプレイパネルの構造を示す図である。
図4を参照すれば、プラズマディスプレイパネルの構造は、図1に図示されたプラズマディスプレイパネルの構造とほぼ同一である。但し、後面基板121に形成されたアドレス電極(AL、AR)は1つの放電セル内で第2表示電極(X)の両側に並べて形成される。
このような構造は第2表示電極(X)とアドレス電極(AL、AR)との間にリセット放電をより円滑にして放電セル内に壁電荷を均一になることができる。
また、電極の形状及び配置構造やはり図2a乃至図2dに図示された例と同一に形成されることができる。
図5は、図4に示したプラズマディスプレイパネルの駆動方法を説明するための図である。
図5を説明すれば、図3に図示されたプラズマディスプレイパネルの駆動方法とほぼ同一である。但し、第1表示電極(Y)に印加される駆動パルス、例えば、スキャンパルスの基準電位は正の電圧(Vb1)を有し、アドレス電極(A)に印加されるデータパルスの基準電位はグラウンド(GND)以下の電圧を有する。すなわち、データパルスの基準電位は負の電圧(−Vb2)を有する。
また、第2表示電極(X)に印加される駆動パルスの基準電位は、第1表示電極(Y)に加えられた正の電圧(Vb1)に比べて低いバイアス電圧(Vb3)でありうる。
この場合、第2表示電極に印加される駆動パルスの基準電位は正の電圧である。
以上のように、本発明に係るプラズマディスプレイパネル及びその駆動方法を例示した図面を参照して説明したが、本発明は明細書に開示された実施形態と図面により限るのでなく、技術思想が保護される範囲内で応用されることができる。

- 前面基板に形成された第1表示電極と、
前記第1表示電極と交差する方向に後面基板に形成された第2表示電極と、
前記後面基板に前記第2表示電極に平行するように形成されたアドレス電極と、

前記第2表示電極の透明電極は1つの放電セル内で突出部を含むことを特徴とする請求項1記載のプラズマディスプレイパネル。 - 第1表示電極が形成された前面基板と、前記第1表示電極と交差する方向に第2表示電極が形成された後面基板と、前記第1表示電極と第2表示電極とが交差して形成された1つの放電セル内で前記第2表示電極の両側に平行するように形成された2つのアドレス電極とを含むプラズマディスプレイパネルの電極に駆動パルスを印加して駆動する方法であって、
前記第2表示電極にリセット期間の間、リセットパルスを印加するステップと、
前記第1表示電極にアドレス期間の間、スキャンパルスを印加して、前記アドレス電極に各々データパルスを同時に印加するステップと、
前記第1表示電極及び第2表示電極にサステイン期間の間、サステインパルスを交互に供給するステップと、
を含むことを特徴とするプラズマディスプレイパネルの駆動方法。 - 前記第2表示電極と前記アドレス電極との間にリセット放電が発生することを特徴とする請求項10記載のプラズマディスプレイパネルの駆動方法。
- 前記第1表示電極と前記アドレス電極との間にアドレッシング放電が発生することを特徴とする請求項10記載のプラズマディスプレイパネルの駆動方法。
- 前記第1表示電極と第2表示電極との間にサステイン放電が発生することを特徴とする請求項10記載のプラズマディスプレイパネルの駆動方法。
- 前記アドレス電極に印加されるデータパルスの基準電位はグラウンド以下であることを特徴とする請求項10記載のプラズマディスプレイパネルの駆動方法。
- 前記第1表示電極に印加される駆動パルスの基準電位は正の電圧であることを特徴とする請求項10記載のプラズマディスプレイパネルの駆動方法。
- 前記第2表示電極に印加される駆動パルスの基準電位は、前記第1表示電極に印加される駆動パルスの基準電位より低いことを特徴とする請求項10記載のプラズマディスプレイパネルの駆動方法。
- 前記第2表示電極に印加される駆動パルスの基準電位は正の電圧であることを特徴とする請求項16記載のプラズマディスプレイパネルの駆動方法。
