Description

The present invention relates to a printing system using a local connection (IEEE1284, USB, etc.).

In recent years when printers have various functions such as stapling, double-sided printing, and electronic sorting instead of a single function, the printer driver can be equipped with optional equipment configurations, such as finishers, duplex units, and additional hard disks. It is necessary to know for sure. Since it is difficult for the user to reliably set this, the printer driver often has a bidirectional communication function for communicating with the device to obtain device configuration information. For example, Patent Documents 1 to 3 are known in relation to a print system in which a computer and a printer are connected by bidirectional communication means.
JP 2002-120417 A JP-A-11-215294 JP 2002-091745 A

There are various two-way communication methods. In direct connection type interfaces such as IEEE1284 (parallel interface) and USB, there are many methods in which an inquiry command is transmitted and a result is received using the same route as print data. In this case, since the route is the same as the print data, bi-directional communication is not possible when the route cannot be used, for example, when the printer has an error or data is flowing during printing. However, from the user's point of view, it is difficult to understand whether two-way communication is successful or not depending on the status of the printer.
The importance of bidirectional communication is as described above, but communication processing between a computer and a printer usually takes more time than processing in the computer. On the other hand, since the bidirectional communication process is performed in the user interface display process of the printer driver, the processing time is directly connected to the convenience for the user.
The present invention provides a print system that utilizes cache information while avoiding a deviation from the state of the device by determining whether to perform caching according to the type of information to be acquired through communication, rather than how the communication result is used. The purpose is to provide.

In order to achieve the above object, the invention described in claim 1 is a case where an inquiry command for acquiring device information cannot be transmitted in a printing system including a computer and a printer that performs bidirectional communication with a printer driver and other utilities. A pseudo-communication means for establishing a pseudo-communication by processing using the immediately preceding communication result, and a category for switching whether to use the cache for each category of information, using the immediately preceding communication result as a cache value And a switching means.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, the print system according to the first aspect is characterized in that the print system performs cache control for each category.

According to the present invention, in a printing system including a computer and a printer that performs bidirectional communication with a printer driver and other utilities, when an inquiry command for device information acquisition cannot be transmitted, processing is performed using the immediately preceding communication result. In addition, it has a function to establish communication in a pseudo manner, and also has a function to switch whether to use the cache for each category of information by using the communication result immediately before as a cache value, It is possible to provide a print system that utilizes cache information while avoiding the divergence.

Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings.
FIG. 1 is a configuration diagram of a print system according to an embodiment of the present invention. This print system is configured by connecting a computer 1 and a printer 2 with a local interface 3 (for example, IEEE 1284 (parallel interface), USB interface, etc.).
In the computer 1, application software 11 and a printer status display monitor 12 operate on a known operating system 13. The printer driver 14 operates as a component of the operating system 13.
Further, the printer driver 14 can communicate with a device using the communication module 15. The communication module 15 can be called not only from the printer driver 14 but also from other applications such as the printer status display monitor 12.
The local interface 3 has a write path 31 for writing data from the computer 1, a read path 32 for receiving data from the device, and a control path 33 (Device ID request and response in the case of IEEE 1284). .
The communication module 15 transmits a command for inquiring about the device configuration via the write path 31 of the local interface 3 and receives the result from the read path 32 in order to acquire information such as the device configuration. Some information is obtained from the control path 33. The communication module 15 can process the reception result to obtain a device configuration.
The communication module 15 stores the device configuration thus obtained as printer information data 16. It is desirable that the storage format is permanent independent of the activation / termination of the communication module 15. A file, a registry (a data storage procedure provided by a Windows (registered trademark) OS of Microsoft Corporation), or the like can be considered.

FIG. 2 is a flowchart of basic operations in the printing system of the present invention. First, when the communication process is started, it is determined whether the printer information needs to be fresh (S1). If necessary, it is checked whether there is printer information (1) at the time of the previous success (S2). If there is, it is determined whether the information (1) can be used as a result of communication and the cache value is usable. Judgment is made (S4), and if the cache is useful, the communication is successful. If there is no meaning in the cache in step S4, communication is failed. If freshness is required in step S1, the device determines whether it is currently possible to query device configuration information (S5). If not, the device proceeds to step S2, and if possible, communicates with the printer to obtain information ( S6) If the communication is successful (if S7 is negative), the communication result is saved as printer information (1) (S8).
Processing is divided depending on whether or not the freshness of information to be acquired from the printer 2 is necessary (determination A). When the freshness of information is unnecessary, the communication module 15 reads the printer information data 16 and returns the value as a communication result.
Whether information freshness is necessary depends on how the information is used. For example, when the printer status display monitor 12 displays a printer device configuration, that is, a mounting option or the like in a bitmap display, the device configuration is only a display problem, and is not necessarily the latest. However, since the printer driver 14 is used for processing such as controlling the device configuration, for example, enabling the double-sided function only when the double-sided unit is installed, the information needs to be fresh.

When it is necessary to acquire information of the printer 2, it is checked whether or not actually necessary information can be acquired. Specifically, it is checked whether or not the device information inquiry command can be written to the write path 32 of the local interface 3.
As this method, there are a method of checking the error by actually writing it, and a method of checking and judging the status of the device. However, depending on the implementation of the operating system 11, a time-out may occur depending on the implementation of the operating system 11. The method of checking the status of the device is more appropriate because it may take a long time or may affect the communication including later printing processing.
A method for checking whether the writing path 32 is valid depends on the implementation of the printer 2, but returns it via the control path 33 or, for example, a read request is made to the read path 31 immediately after the control path 33. There are ways to return it.
If the information can be acquired, the communication module 15 acquires information from the printer 2 and stores the result in the printer information data 16. If information acquisition is impossible, the communication module 15 returns the contents of the printer information data 16 as a communication result. However, the cached value may not be treated as valid (decision B).

The gist of the present invention is that the above-described processing, in particular, “determination A” and “determination B” in FIG. 2 can be properly used for each category of information. Claim 1 is an invention in which judgment B is used separately, and claim 2 is an invention in which judgment A is used for each category. FIG. 3 is an example of determination based on the information category.
As an example of claim 1, the status of the printer 2, that is, the standby state, cover open, paper jam, etc. is meaningless even if the cache value is taken. On the other hand, since the device configuration of the printer 2 does not change so frequently, it becomes “useful even in cache”.
As an example of claim 2, the device configuration of the printer 2 should be acquired if it can be acquired although it does not fluctuate frequently. That is, the judgment A is “freshness is necessary”. On the other hand, permanent information that does not change once acquired, such as the serial number of the printer 2, is “no need for freshness”.
Of course, the decision B can change not only in the information category but also in the application of information, that is, whether it is used by the printer driver 14 or the printer status display monitor 12.
In this embodiment, it is possible to have the judgment B of FIG. 2 for each information category. Therefore, when information that requires freshness cannot be obtained at that time, a communication failure is notified to the user, and information that does not require freshness is used. Can effectively use the cache to conceal the state of the printer 2.
In addition, since it is possible to have the judgment A of FIG. 2 for each information category, communication cost can be reduced by performing communication once for persistent information without performing communication every time.
