Description

The present invention relates to a method for producing a glass substrate for an information recording medium used for an information recording medium such as a magnetic disk, a magneto-optical disk, or an optical disk, which is a recording medium of an information recording apparatus such as a hard disk.

。   2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, a glass disk substrate for information recording medium (hereinafter also referred to as “glass substrate” for short) is formed as a magnetic disk or the like as an information recording medium by forming a magnetic film or the like on its main surface. In recent years, magnetic disks and the like have been required to have improved durability with respect to size reduction such as reduction in diameter and thickness, and increase in rotational speed. In order to meet these requirements, the glass substrate is subjected to a chemical strengthening treatment to form a compressive stress layer on the main surface or the like, thereby improving the strength (for example, see Patent Document 1).

While the chemical strengthening treatment has the advantage of improving the strength, it also has defects such as adhesion of foreign substances such as metal powder to the surface of the chemically strengthened glass substrate. Proposals have been made. For example, Patent Document 2 pays attention to particles such as iron powder existing in the chemical strengthening treatment liquid, and various methods are used to suppress the formation of convex portions due to the oxidation reaction during the treatment and adhesion of the particles to the glass substrate due to heat. Measures are taken. However, even if various measures are taken in this way, it is difficult to completely eliminate the convex portion, and it is not possible to completely suppress the adhesion of particles to the glass substrate during processing. The number remained limited. Moreover, as a foreign material adhering to a glass substrate, there exists a thing adhering to the glass substrate before a chemical strengthening process other than the particle which exists in a chemical strengthening process liquid. The number of such foreign substances can be reduced by methods such as cleaning the atmosphere of chemical strengthening and reducing iron foreign substances from chemically strengthened salts, but it is extremely difficult to remove them completely. Again, the effect was only a reduction in the number of protrusions.

Therefore, a technique has been proposed in which the glass substrate is polished after the chemical strengthening treatment to remove the reinforcing layer together with foreign matters, convex portions, and the like. For example, in Patent Document 3, a glass substrate that has been lapped is chemically strengthened to form a reinforcing layer having a thickness of 20 μm or more, and then polished to remove 10 μm or more of the reinforcing layer on the main surface by polishing. Is described. Patent Document 4 describes that, in a glass disk substrate for magnetic recording media, a polishing process is performed after chemical strengthening to remove the reinforcing layer on the main surface of the disk substrate. In addition, Patent Document 5 and Patent Document 6 describe polishing a glass substrate after chemical strengthening treatment.

However, when the glass substrate is polished after the chemical strengthening treatment as in Patent Document 3, Patent Document 4, etc., the glass substrate during or after polishing is warped or the main surface is wavy. As a result, there has been a problem that quality degradation occurs frequently. This decrease in quality such as warpage of the glass substrate and waviness of the main surface is considered to be caused by a thick compressive stress layer formed on the glass substrate by chemical strengthening treatment before polishing. For example, in Example 1 of Patent Document 3, a reinforcing layer is formed on a glass substrate so as to have a thickness of 60 μm.

That is, the glass substrate after the chemical strengthening treatment has a substantially uniform thickness of the compressive stress layer in each part such as the main surface, so the surface compressive stress is balanced in each part, and the balance of the surface compressive stress in each part. The occurrence of warpage, swell, etc. is suppressed by maintaining the above. However, if part or all of the compressive stress layer is removed by polishing the front and back surfaces of the glass substrate, the compressive stress layer provided on each surface tends to have a difference in thickness during or after polishing. With the occurrence of the difference, the surface compressive stress balance is lost. In particular, when the front and back surfaces of a glass substrate are polished simultaneously using a polishing device, etc., it is very difficult to always maintain the same removal amount (polishing rate) per unit time on each surface. The stress balance is very easy to collapse. As the compressive stress layer is formed thicker, the time required to remove a part or all of the compressive stress layer is correspondingly increased. As a result, the thickness difference of the compressive stress layer frequently occurs during or after polishing. As a result, the glass substrate is likely to warp or swell.

In addition, when using a polishing apparatus or the like, the reason why it is very difficult to always make the polishing rate the same is the difficulty of control when the polishing slurry wraps around the glass substrate. The glass substrate is gently held by a holding plate called a carrier whose thickness is smaller than that of the glass substrate so as not to cause a lateral shift. The polishing slurry is supplied along the upper and lower surfaces of the carrier. When the polishing slurry enters between the polishing pad and the glass substrate, it is difficult to completely match the amounts of penetration of the front surface and the back surface of the glass substrate. Therefore, the polishing rate is slightly different between the front surface and the back surface of the substrate.

Furthermore, in the said patent document 3, it is essential to lapping a glass substrate before a chemical strengthening process. Although this lapping process can grind the glass substrate in a short time, since the processing accuracy is rough, the lapping process removes cracks, especially fine cracks, existing on the main surface of the glass substrate. It is difficult to do. When polishing is performed after the chemical strengthening treatment, the following problems occur if cracks existing at the end portions are not removed before the chemical strengthening treatment. That is, when the reinforcing layer thickness is 60 μm or less, the bending strength and the heat shock strength are lowered. Further, when the reinforcing layer is 80 μm or more, the flatness is deteriorated by the polishing process performed after the strengthening. In addition, when the compressive stress layer on the main surface is completely removed by polishing after chemical strengthening as in Patent Document 4, the bending strength is lowered. This is because stress concentrates on the boundary between the edge and the main surface in bending strength tests such as ring-on-ring and ball-on-ring, so if the compressive stress layer on the main surface is completely removed, This is because destruction tends to occur on the main surface.

The present invention has been made paying attention to such problems existing in the prior art. Can be provided.

Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings.
As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, a glass disk substrate 11 for information recording media (hereinafter also referred to as “glass substrate 11” for short) is formed in a disk shape and has a circular hole 12 at the center thereof. Yes. In an information recording medium such as a magnetic disk, a magneto-optical disk, and an optical disk, a magnetic film made of a metal or an alloy such as cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), or iron (Fe) is formed on the main surface 13 of the glass substrate 11. Further, it is configured by forming a protective film or the like. The circular hole 12 is provided to insert a spindle for rotating the information recording medium when the glass substrate 11 is configured as an information recording medium. And the chamfer 16 formed by chamfering each corner | angular part etc. of the outer peripheral end surface 14 and the inner peripheral end surface 15 is provided in the outer peripheral edge part and inner peripheral part which are the edge parts of the said glass substrate 11, for example. Yes.

Here, the main surface 13 indicates a portion to be a recording surface on which information is recorded when an information recording medium is used. Specifically, the outer peripheral end surface 14 and the inner peripheral end surface on the front side or the back side of the glass substrate 11. 15 and the portion excluding the chamfer 16 are indicated. There are information recording media in which the chamfer 16 or the like can be used as a recording surface by providing the chamfer 16 or the like with the magnetic film, the protective film, or the like. In such an information recording medium, as in the case of the information recording medium described above, a portion excluding the outer peripheral end face 14, the inner peripheral end face 15 and the chamfer 16 on the front side or the rear side of the glass substrate 11 is the main surface 13. To do.

In the said glass substrate 11, the outer periphery reinforcement | strengthening layer 17 and the inner periphery reinforcement | strengthening layer 18 are each formed as a compressive-stress layer in an outer peripheral part and an inner peripheral part. Further, on the front side and the back side of the glass substrate 11, a main surface reinforcing layer 19 is formed on each main surface 13 as a compressive stress layer. These compressive stress layers are formed by chemical strengthening treatment on the surfaces of the glass substrate 11 such as the outer peripheral end surface 14, the inner peripheral end surface 15, the chamfer 16, the main surface 13, and the like. It is formed by exchanging with. And the outer periphery reinforcement layer 17, the inner periphery reinforcement layer 18, and the main surface reinforcement layer 19 are suppressing the expansion, progress (growth), etc. of the fine crack (crack) formed in each surface of the glass substrate 11, respectively. Yes.

Here, suppression of crack growth by the compressive stress layer will be described. The crack is formed so as to extend in a substantially orthogonal direction with respect to each surface of the glass substrate 11. When an external force is applied to each surface of the glass substrate 11, the crack progresses inward from each surface of the glass substrate 11 while opening in a wedge shape, and grows to generate large cracks, chips (chipping), cracks. Such defects are generated. On the other hand, the compressive stress layer generates compressive stress so as to compress each portion of the glass substrate 11 when ions having a large ion radius are densely packed. The compressive stress generated in the compressive stress layer acts to close the crack with respect to the crack, thereby suppressing the growth of the crack. Then, by suppressing the growth of cracks, it is possible to suppress the occurrence of defects and maintain the strength of the glass substrate 11. In addition, since a crack grows and becomes large even if it is very minute, it becomes a factor which reduces the intensity | strength of the glass substrate 11 irrespective of the magnitude | size.

The glass substrate 11 or the information recording medium is required to have sufficient strength to prevent the occurrence of the above-described defects during transportation, manufacture, use, and the like. Out of the compressive stress layer, the outer peripheral reinforcing layer 17 and the inner peripheral reinforcing layer 18 are formed mainly for the purpose of maintaining this sufficient strength. More specifically, since the outer peripheral reinforcing layer 17 is likely to be defective due to the contact of the outer peripheral edge to the holder or the like when the glass substrate 11 or the information recording medium is transported or manufactured, the outer peripheral reinforcing layer 17 is strong enough to withstand this contact. It is formed mainly for the purpose of holding. The inner circumferential reinforcing layer 18 has strength that can withstand contact during transportation, manufacturing, and the like, and can withstand stress applied to the inner peripheral edge during rotation of the glass substrate 11 or the information recording medium fixed to the spindle or the like. It is formed mainly for the purpose of holding. And in order to hold | maintain the intensity | strength of an outer periphery part and an inner periphery part with the glass substrate 11 or an information recording medium, the outer periphery reinforcement | strengthening layer 17 and the inner periphery reinforcement | strengthening layer 18 are formed by predetermined thickness, and thereby an outer periphery part and The surface compressive stress value of the inner peripheral edge is set to a predetermined value or more.

As the thickness of the compressive stress layer decreases, the compressive stress can be applied to the cracks only at very small portions close to the outer peripheral end surface 14, the inner peripheral end surface 15, or the chamfer 16. Therefore, it is preferable that the lower limit value of the thickness of the compressive stress layer is determined from the viewpoint of sufficiently maintaining the strength of the glass substrate 11 and the like, and the compressive stress is applied to the widest possible range of cracks as the thickness equal to or greater than the lower limit value. On the other hand, the portions close to each surface of the glass substrate 11 are more easily subjected to ion exchange than the inside, so that the compressive stress acts most on the cracks on each surface and becomes smaller from each surface toward the inside of the glass substrate 11. And since the crack grows from each surface, the lower limit value of the surface compressive stress value of each surface, which is the largest value from the viewpoint of sufficiently suppressing the crack growth, is determined, and the surface compression above this lower limit value is determined. As a stress value, it is preferable to stop the growth of cracks on each surface or in the vicinity thereof.

Further, when the flatness of the glass substrate 11 or the information recording medium is poor, the glass substrate 11 or the information recording medium is damaged due to eccentric rotation, or the recorded information cannot be read accurately due to the deterioration of the flight stability of the head. It causes a defect. For this reason, the glass substrate 11 or the information recording medium is required to have sufficient flatness so as not to cause defects in addition to maintaining strength. Of the compressive stress layer, the main surface reinforcing layer 19 is formed mainly for the purpose of maintaining this sufficient flatness. The main surface reinforcing layer 19 is formed by forming a compressive stress layer with a substantially uniform thickness on the main surface 13 with the outer peripheral reinforcing layer 17 and the inner peripheral reinforcing layer 18 by chemical strengthening treatment, and removing most of the compressive stress layer. It is formed. For this reason, the main surface reinforcing layer 19 is thinner than the outer peripheral reinforcing layer 17 and the inner peripheral reinforcing layer 18 and generates less compressive stress. Therefore, the glass substrate 11 or the information recording medium has the front side and the back side. Therefore, the compressive stress balance is not easily lost. In addition, since most of the compressive stress layer formed during the chemical strengthening process is removed, foreign matters, protrusions, etc. attached to and adhered to the main surface 13 of the glass substrate 11 during the chemical strengthening process are removed together with the compressive stress layer. The cleanliness of the glass substrate 11 or the main surface 13 of the information recording medium is improved.

On the other hand, paying attention only to maintenance of flatness, improvement of cleanliness, etc., excessive removal of the compressive stress layer on the main surface 13 formed during the chemical strengthening process, for example, removing all the compressive stress layer, etc. In such a case, the flatness is deteriorated, and the strength is also lowered. That is, when all of the compressive stress layer is removed, the compressive stress is released at the main surface 13 portion in spite of the compressive stress acting at the outer peripheral edge and the inner peripheral edge. Or, the balance of compressive stress between the inner peripheral edge portion and the main surface 13 is greatly broken. This becomes a cause of occurrence of distortion and waviness of the main surface 13 and warping of the glass substrate 11. In particular, the main surface 13 has a larger area than the outer peripheral end surface 14, the inner peripheral end surface 15, or the chamfer 16, and when the balance of compressive stress is lost here, the warp of the glass substrate 11 becomes large. Further, cracks also exist on the main surface 13, and if no compressive stress is applied to the cracks, the cracks grow and cause defects even with a slight impact.

Therefore, in the main surface 13, from the viewpoint of suppressing warpage or the like, an upper limit value of the surface compressive stress value generated in the main surface reinforcing layer 19 is determined, and the compressive stress balance between the front surface side and the back surface side of the glass substrate 11 or the like. Is preferably maintained. Further, in the main surface 13, from the viewpoint of maintaining flatness, maintaining strength, etc., a lower limit value of the surface compressive stress value is set, and while maintaining a balance with the compressive stress of the outer peripheral edge portion and the inner peripheral edge portion, It is preferable to suppress growth.

Here, the thicknesses of the outer peripheral reinforcing layer 17, the inner peripheral reinforcing layer 18 and the main surface reinforcing layer 19, which are compressive stress layers, and the surface compressive stress values of the outer peripheral end surface 14, the inner peripheral end surface 15, the main surface 13 and the like are parallel Nicols. It is the value obtained from the result of the stress measurement by the method. In the stress measurement by the parallel Nicol method, a KOBRA-CCD manufactured by OG measuring equipment is used as a measuring instrument. In the stress measurement by the parallel Nicol method, the stress distribution can be two-dimensionally shown by pixels having a side of 10 μm square. For this reason, according to the parallel Nicol method, it is possible to accurately measure the stress distribution. The stress measurement method includes a vertical Nicol method in addition to the parallel Nicol method. However, in the stress measurement by the vertical Nicol method, the stress distribution can only be shown one-dimensionally, and the number of gradations is smaller than that in the parallel Nicol method, and it is difficult to measure the stress distribution with high accuracy. In this specification, the surface compressive stress value on the main surface 13 is calculated as an average value of the main surface 13 on the front surface side and the main surface 13 on the back surface side. This is because the present invention has only a small amount of compressive stress layer on each main surface 13, so that the accuracy of the surface compressive stress value is increased.

The glass substrate 11 will be specifically described. The glass substrate 11 is made of an aluminosilicate glass manufactured by a float method, a downdraw method, a redraw method, or a press method. The reason for using aluminosilicate glass is that when the glass substrate 11 is chemically strengthened to a desired strength, the treatment is performed at a low temperature and in a short time. Aluminosilicate glass is SiO 2 in the glass composition, aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) as an aluminum oxide, and R 2 O (R = potassium (K), sodium (Na ), Lithium (Li)) as a main component.

The flatness of the glass substrate 11 is preferably a size having a diameter of 65 mm, an inner diameter of 20 mm, and a thickness of 0.635 mm and not more than 4.5 μm. The flatness is a value represented by the amount of warpage obtained by measuring the height difference between the center and the periphery on the main surface 13 of the glass substrate 11 as shown in FIG. When this flatness exceeds 4.5 μm, the glass substrate 11 has low quality with warping.

Here, the reason why the flatness of the glass substrate 11 is evaluated with the above-mentioned size will be described. Even if the glass substrate 11 has the same surface stress, the warpage amount of the glass substrate 11 is different if the size and thickness are different. Therefore, the amount of warpage of the glass substrate 11 having a size and thickness for practical use was calculated in terms of material mechanics. This calculation method will be described below.

As shown in FIG. 3A, the disk-shaped glass substrate 11 warps due to the difference between the stress applied to the front surface and the stress applied to the back surface. In order to simplify the warping due to the stress, it is assumed that an evenly distributed load q is applied to the entire surface of the glass substrate 11 as shown in FIG. Here, there is a statement about the bending when a disk having a circular hole at the center, such as the glass substrate 11, is bent (the theory of plates and shells (above), by Timoshenko and Voanowsky Krieger). According to this discussion, when a uniformly distributed load is applied to a disk having a circular hole at the center, Wmax, which is the maximum amount of deflection, is calculated by the following equation (1).

Wmax=k1×q×a4/(E×h3)…(1)
Wmax = k1 × q × a 4 / (E × h 3 ) (1)
(Where, k1 is a coefficient, q is a uniformly distributed load, a is the outer radius of the substrate, E is the Young's modulus of the substrate, h is the thickness of the substrate, and k1 is the outer radius a of the glass substrate 11) (It is a coefficient determined by the ratio a / b of the inner radius b, and is calculated for various values of a / b in the above-mentioned book and is given in the table.)
On the other hand, when the size of the glass substrate 11 used for practical use is given, it is as follows. That is, in the order of diameter, inner diameter, and thickness, the disk A is 65 × 20 × 0.635 mm, the disk B is 84 × 25 × 1.030 mm, the disk C is 84 × 25 × 1.270 mm, and the disk D is 48 × 12. × 0.508 mm. In these disks A to D, k1 was approximately obtained from the ratio a / b of the outer peripheral radius and inner peripheral radius of the substrate, and Wmax, which is the maximum deflection amount, was calculated. These numbers are summarized in Table 1. Note that the maximum deflection amount Wmax in a disk having a circular hole at the center is proportional to the evenly distributed load q and inversely proportional to the Young's modulus E from the above equation (1).

Figure 2005174500
Figure 2005174500
From the results of Table 1, it was shown that the disk with the largest Wmax was the disk A. Therefore, it is considered that the glass substrate 11 provided for practical use is most likely to warp due to surface stress when the size is 65 × 20 × 0.635 mm. Accordingly, the flatness was evaluated using the glass substrate 11 having the largest warpage, that is, the size of 65 × 20 × 0.635 mm.

The glass substrate 11 having the size of 65 × 20 × 0.635 mm and made of aluminosilicate glass is preferably 3 μm or more in thickness from the outer peripheral reinforcing layer 17 and the inner peripheral reinforcing layer 18 from the viewpoint of maintaining sufficient strength. More preferably, it is 5 μm or more, and more preferably 10 μm or more. In addition, the surface compressive stress value is preferably 4 from the viewpoint of suppressing the growth of cracks in the outer peripheral end surface 14, the inner peripheral end surface 15, the chamfer 16, and the like on which the outer peripheral reinforcing layer 17 and the inner peripheral reinforcing layer 18 are formed. It is 0.9 MPa (0.5 kg / mm 2 ) or more, more preferably 9.8 MPa (1 kg / mm 2 ) or more.

The thicknesses of the outer peripheral reinforcing layer 17 and the inner peripheral reinforcing layer 18 are preferably 60 μm or less, and more preferably 50 μm or less. In the outer peripheral end face 14, the inner peripheral end face 15, the chamfer 16, and the like, the surface compressive stress value is preferably 206 MPa (21 kg / mm 2 ). The upper limit of the thickness of the outer peripheral reinforcing layer 17 and the inner peripheral reinforcing layer 18 and the upper limit of the surface compressive stress value are values defined from the viewpoint of suppressing warpage of the glass substrate 11 and the like.

That is, the main surface reinforcing layer 19 is formed by forming a compressive stress layer on the main surface 13 with substantially the same thickness as the outer peripheral reinforcing layer 17 and the inner peripheral reinforcing layer 18 and removing most of the compressive stress layer. It is a thing. If this compressive stress layer becomes excessively thick or the compressive stress becomes high, the time required to remove most of the compressive stress layer and form the main surface reinforcing layer 19 will be correspondingly increased. Thus, as the time required for removing the compressive stress layer becomes longer, the balance of compressive stress tends to be lost on the front and back surfaces of the glass substrate 11 during the removal, and the flatness is increased due to the warp of the glass substrate 11 or the like. May get worse. Further, when the main surface reinforcing layer 19 is formed, a part of the outer peripheral reinforcing layer 17 and the inner peripheral reinforcing layer 18 formed on the chamfer 16 is removed. For this reason, when the thickness of the outer peripheral reinforcing layer 17 or the inner peripheral reinforcing layer 18 becomes non-uniform, the balance of compressive stress is lost at the outer peripheral edge or inner peripheral edge of the glass substrate 11, which is influenced by this and the main surface 13. May be distorted. Therefore, by defining the upper limit of the thickness and the surface compressive stress value of the outer peripheral reinforcing layer 17 and the inner peripheral reinforcing layer 18, the thickness of the compressive stress layer and the surface compressive stress value before forming the main surface reinforcing layer 19 are specified. The collapse of the balance of compressive stress at the outer peripheral edge or the inner peripheral edge is suppressed. In addition to this, another reason for determining the upper limit of the surface compressive stress value is to suppress a decrease in productivity due to the long time required for the chemical strengthening treatment.

On the other hand, the glass substrate 11 preferably has a surface compressive stress value of 25 MPa (2.5 kg / mm 2 ) or less from the viewpoint of suppressing warpage or the like. Further, the main surface 13 preferably has a surface compressive stress value of 1.0 MPa (0.1 kg / mm 2 ) or more from the viewpoint of maintaining flatness, maintaining strength, and the like. In addition, in the main surface 13 of the said glass substrate 11, the surface compressive stress value is regarded as important, and the thickness of the main surface reinforcing layer 19 may be a thickness that can satisfy the surface compressive stress value.

The main surface 13 of the glass substrate 11 may be provided with a ridge-like texture composed of a plurality of ridges. Each ridge constituting the texture is formed so as to extend in the circumferential direction of the glass substrate 11 and may be arranged so as to draw concentric circles. This texture is formed to reduce the contact area between the recording surface and the head when the information recording medium is used while the main surface 13 of the glass substrate 11 is smooth. That is, in the information recording medium, as the recording surface becomes more smooth, a phenomenon in which the head is in close contact with the recording surface (super adhesion phenomenon: sticking) is likely to occur.

When such a phenomenon occurs, problems such as the information recording medium being unable to rotate occur. For this reason, by providing a texture that is minute irregularities on the main surface 13 of the glass substrate 11 and reducing the contact area between the recording surface and the head when used as an information recording medium, the occurrence of the super-adhesion phenomenon is suppressed. Yes. In addition, the glass substrate 11 provided with the texture has high coercive force and magnetic anisotropy when used as an information recording medium. Although the detailed reason has not been clarified yet, the inventors presume that the metal atoms forming the magnetic film are arranged in a well-oriented manner on the ridge-like textured slope. .

In a state where the texture is provided, the arithmetic average roughness (Ra) of the main surface 13 of the glass substrate 11 is preferably 0.5 nm or less. The height (NRa) of the main surface 13 is preferably 0.2 nm or less. The glass substrate 11 in which Ra exceeds 0.5 nm or NRa exceeds 0.2 nm is assumed to have low rough smoothness on the main surface 13. This is to achieve high density recording, which is required for information recording media in recent years. That is, in order to achieve high density recording, it is necessary to make the distance between the recording surface of the information recording medium and the head as short as possible, and when Ra and NRa are large, the head contacts or collides with irregularities, etc. This is because the problem of this is likely to occur frequently. In addition, Ra shows the value computed according to the method prescribed | regulated to JISB0601 from the measured value obtained using atomic force microscope (AFM). NRa is a value measured by scanning a predetermined area on the surface with white light using a three-dimensional surface structure analysis microscope (NewView 200) manufactured by Zygo, with a measurement wavelength (λ) of 0.2 to 1.4 mm.
Next, the manufacturing method of the said glass substrate is demonstrated.
The glass substrate 11 is manufactured through a disk processing process, an edge processing process, an etching process, a chemical strengthening process process, a polishing process, and a cleaning process process in the order of processes.

In the disk processing step, by using a cemented carbide or diamond cutter, the base substrate is cut out into a disk shape having a circular hole in the center from a glass base plate having a planar square shape. In the end portion machining step, the outer peripheral end surface and the inner peripheral end surface of the base substrate are ground so that the outer diameter and the inner diameter are predetermined dimensions, and the corner portions of the outer peripheral end surface and the inner peripheral end surface are chamfered so that the chamfer 16 is formed. It is formed. In the end machining step, the outer peripheral end surface 14, the inner peripheral end surface 15, and the chamfer 16 are polished to form a smooth surface.

In the etching step, cracks existing on the main surface of the base substrate that becomes the main surface 13, the outer peripheral end surface 14, the inner peripheral end surface 15, and the end surface of the base substrate that becomes the chamfer 16 when the glass substrate 11 is formed are difficult to grow. Etching is performed for the purpose of forming the shape. In the chemical strengthening treatment step, the glass substrate is subjected to a chemical strengthening treatment for the purpose of improving impact resistance, vibration resistance, heat resistance and the like required for an information recording medium. In the polishing step, the main surface of the base substrate is subjected to polishing for the purpose of smoothing the main surface 13 required for the glass substrate 11. And in the said washing | cleaning process process, the grinding | polishing which adhered to the main surface of the base substrate by performing the cleaning process to a base substrate using a washing | cleaning liquid for the purpose of achieving the cleanliness requested | required of the glass substrate 11 Deposits such as agent, polishing powder and dust are removed.

In addition, in this embodiment, it is mentioned as one characteristic that the process of performing the lapping process like the conventional method is not provided before the chemical strengthening treatment process. That is, lapping is a process of grinding the main surface of the raw substrate in a short time using a polishing apparatus or the like, and the content of the process is almost the same as the polishing process. However, in the polishing process, a polishing pad is used to polish the main surface of the base substrate, but in the lapping, the polishing pad is not used, and the main surface of the base substrate is brought into contact with the surface plate of the polishing apparatus for grinding. . Moreover, the abrasive | polishing agent used by lapping is a thing coarser compared with what is used by grinding | polishing process. Therefore, the lapping is rougher than the polishing process, and it is difficult to remove cracks that cause a decrease in strength. In particular, when a lapping process is performed after the etching step, there is a possibility that a crack that has been made difficult to grow has a shape that is easy to grow. Therefore, in this embodiment, lapping is omitted, and cracks are effectively removed by using a raw substrate that has not been previously lapped before chemical strengthening.

Moreover, when providing a texture in the main surface 13 of the glass substrate 11, the texture processing process for providing a texture is performed between a grinding | polishing process and a washing | cleaning process. This texture processing is performed by using an apparatus called a texture machine and rubbing the polishing member while supplying polishing slurry to the main surface of the base substrate.

The etching process, chemical strengthening process, and polishing process will be described in more detail.
(Etching process)
The etching process is performed by immersing the base substrate in an etching solution. The base substrate subjected to the etching process blunts the tip of cracks existing on the main surface and end surface by etching the main surface and end surface. The main surface of the base substrate is a portion that becomes the main surface 13 when the glass substrate 11 is used, and the end surface is a portion that becomes the outer peripheral end surface 14, the inner peripheral end surface 15, and the chamfer 16 when the glass substrate 11 is used. .

By blunting the tip of the crack in this way, stress concentration on the tip can be avoided, and crack growth can be suppressed. That is, the crack has a portion that forms an acute angle or a sharp shape in the inside, particularly the tip, and stress tends to concentrate on the portion, and when the stress is concentrated, a new crack is generated from the portion, Cracks and the like are generated, which causes cracks to grow. In the etching process, the inside of the crack or even the tip of the crack is etched, and the portion where the stress is likely to concentrate is formed into an obtuse or curved shape so that the stress is not easily concentrated.

In the etching process, the etching amount is preferably 1 μm or more and 20 μm or less. The amount of etching refers to the elution thickness on one side of the substrate, that is, the difference between the thickness of the substrate before the etching process and the thickness of the substrate after the etching process. When the etching amount is less than 1 μm, the shape of the crack may not be sufficiently corrected. If the etching amount exceeds 20 μm, the flatness of the glass substrate 11 may deteriorate due to excessive elution of the surface portion of the base substrate. In addition, there is a possibility that continuation of cracks may occur by expanding the width of cracks and overlapping with adjacent cracks. In addition, when continuation of the crack occurs, the ridge line portion formed by overlapping the cracks forms an acute angle (projection shape), so stress concentrates on the ridge line portion and new cracks are likely to occur. .

As the etching solution, it is preferable to use an acidic aqueous solution having a high etching ability with respect to glass in order to etch a base substrate made of aluminosilicate glass and to reliably correct the shape of the crack. As such an acidic aqueous solution, fluorine-based acidic aqueous solutions such as hydrofluoric acid solution and fluorinated silicon acid solution are more preferable, and sulfuric acid, nitric acid and the like are also included. However, if the main surface or the like of the base substrate is excessively etched, the main surface or the like may be roughened due to release of stress strain generated during processing such as disk processing or edge processing. In particular, a fluorine-based acidic aqueous solution has a high etching ability with respect to the glass composition and has a high possibility of roughening the main surface. For this reason, when using a fluorine-type acidic aqueous solution, the density | concentration is preferably 0.05-2.5 mol / L (0.1-5 mass%) as a fluorine ion density | concentration in a solution. In addition, in order to remove deposits such as polishing powder and dust adhering to the main surface and end surface of the substrate, an additive such as a surfactant, a chelating agent, or an organic solvent may be added to the etching solution. Good.

The temperature of the etching solution in the etching treatment is preferably 20 to 50 ° C. in order to exhibit necessary and sufficient etching performance. When the temperature of the etching solution is less than 20 ° C., the etching ability is lowered and the shape of the crack may not be sufficiently corrected. When the temperature of the etching solution exceeds 50 ° C., the etching ability is exerted excessively, and it may be difficult to perform the treatment while controlling the etching amount and the like.

In the said etching process, before performing an etching process, it is preferable to perform the alkali process which uses alkaline aqueous solution as a process liquid. The purpose of the alkali treatment is to remove the adhering matter such as dust by washing the main surface and the end surface of the base substrate with an alkaline aqueous solution before the etching treatment. These deposits cover the main surface and part of the end surface of the base substrate, thereby causing defects such as non-uniform etching and leaving cracks that are easy to grow. The alkali treatment suppresses the occurrence of such problems by removing the deposits with the treatment liquid. Moreover, in order to improve the washing | cleaning performance with respect to a deposit | attachment, it is more preferable to use what added auxiliary | assistance (builders), such as surfactant, a chelating agent, and an organic solvent, to alkaline water solution.

(Chemical strengthening treatment)
The chemical strengthening treatment is performed by immersing the base substrate in a chemical strengthening treatment liquid obtained by heating and melting the chemical strengthening salt for a predetermined time. Specific examples of the chemically strengthened salt include potassium nitrate, sodium nitrate, silver nitrate, etc., each alone or a mixture of at least two kinds. And, by the chemical strengthening treatment, monovalent metal ions such as lithium ions and sodium ions in the glass composition on the main surface and end face of the base substrate are monovalent such as sodium ions and potassium ions having a larger ion radius. The metal ions are ion-exchanged to form a compressive stress layer.

In the chemical strengthening treatment, first, a compressive stress layer is formed on the main surface and the end face of the base substrate. At this time, the thickness of the compressive stress layer is preferably 3 to 60 μm, more preferably 5 to 50 μm. The surface compressive stress value is preferably 4.9 to 206 MPa, more preferably 9.8 to 196 MPa. The thickness of the compressive stress layer is a value obtained by the stress measurement by the parallel Nicol method mentioned above.

When the thickness of the compressive stress layer is less than 3 μm or the compressive stress value is less than 4.9 MPa, there is a high possibility that the glass substrate does not satisfy the impact resistance, vibration resistance, heat resistance, etc. required for the information recording medium. . When the thickness of the compressive stress layer exceeds 60 μm or the compressive stress value exceeds 206 MPa, the stress balance is lost during various processes such as a polishing process and a texture processing process, and the possibility that the base substrate is warped increases. In addition to this, the time required for the chemical strengthening treatment or polishing treatment becomes longer and the production amount is reduced.

In the chemical strengthening treatment, the thickness of the compressive stress layer and the compressive stress value are in the above ranges, so that the temperature of the chemical strengthening treatment liquid, the immersion time of the base substrate in the chemical strengthening treatment solution, and the like are appropriately adjusted. The

The temperature of the chemical strengthening treatment liquid is preferably about 50 to 200 ° C. lower than the strain point of the material used for the base substrate. If the temperature is lower than the temperature lower by about 200 ° C. than the strain point of the material of the base substrate, the base substrate cannot be sufficiently chemically strengthened. On the other hand, when the temperature is lower by about 50 ° C. than the strain point of the material of the base substrate, the base substrate may be distorted when the base substrate is subjected to chemical strengthening treatment. The temperature of the chemical strengthening treatment liquid itself is about 300 to 400 ° C.

The immersion time in the chemical strengthening treatment liquid is preferably 10 minutes to 4 hours. When the immersion time is less than 10 minutes, the compressive stress layer may be formed shallower than the above range or the compressive stress value may be less than the above range. Moreover, when immersion time exceeds 4 hours, the compressive-stress layer formed will be excessively deep, the time required for a chemical strengthening process or a grinding | polishing process will become long, and a production amount will reduce.

(Polishing process)
The polishing process is performed by polishing the main surface of the base substrate with an abrasive using a polishing apparatus. The polishing equipment includes a single wafer type that polishes the substrate one by one and a batch type that polishes a plurality of raw substrates at one time. There is no limitation, and any of them may be used. Further, the abrasive used is a slurry in which abrasive grains are dispersed in a solvent such as water.

In the polishing process, for example, undulation formed by distortion, bending, warpage, etc. of the substrate, scratches formed during conveyance, chipping, cracks, and other defects are corrected, and the main surface of the substrate is smoothed. It is an object. And the said grinding | polishing process divides | segments the main surface of a base substrate in steps at least into two steps, and improves the smoothness of the main surface every time it passes, thereby smoothing the main surface reliably. It is preferable.

A preferable aspect of the polishing treatment is to perform the process in two stages, that is, a rough polishing process at the previous stage and a precision polishing process at the subsequent stage. The rough polishing process is a process performed to correct a relatively large defect among the defects, and an allowance for polishing is important. For this reason, in the rough polishing treatment, a soft or hard polisher having a hardness that can be polished without greatly damaging the main surface of the base substrate is used as a polishing pad, and the abrasive grains have a large particle size. Things are used. As the abrasive grains used in this rough polishing treatment, those containing cerium oxide, lanthanum oxide or the like are preferably used.

The precision polishing process is a process that is performed to correct a minute defect, and the removal allowance is not emphasized, and emphasis is placed on not damaging the surface of the base substrate. For this reason, in the precision polishing treatment, a soft polisher that is soft enough to be polished without using the main surface of the base substrate as a polishing pad is largely scraped, and the abrasive grains have a small particle size. Is used. As the abrasive grains used in this precision polishing treatment, those containing rare earth oxides such as cerium oxide and lanthanum oxide, colloidal silica and the like are preferably used.

In the polishing treatment, the compressive stress layer formed on the main surface is partially removed from the compressive stress layer formed on the main surface and the end surface of the base substrate. That is, when the compressive stress layer is formed by the chemical strengthening treatment, the base substrate is adhered to the main surface by deposits such as chemically strengthened salt and iron powder, or bulges due to compressive stress are formed. The main surface is likely to be roughened. And when it is set as the glass substrate 11, such roughness will affect the smoothness of the main surface. Therefore, in the polishing process, the main surface is emphasized to be smooth, and such a rough portion is removed together with a portion of the compressive stress layer. Specifically, the thickness of the compressive stress layer removed by the polishing treatment is preferably 2 μm or more for each main surface. This is because, when attention is paid to the main surfaces of the front surface and the back surface of the base substrate, portions having a thickness of up to 2 μm from the respective surfaces are most roughened during the chemical strengthening treatment.

The polishing treatment is preferably performed until the surface compressive stress value of the main surface of the substrate becomes 25 MPa (2.5 kg / mm 2 ) or less. By setting the surface compressive stress value to 25 MPa or less, the flatness is almost surely 4.5 μm or less. FIG. 4 shows the relationship between the compressive stress value of the main surface after polishing and the flatness. In the figure, when a compressive stress layer having a thickness of more than 5 μm and less than 50 μm is formed before polishing, the flatness is 4 by polishing so that the surface compressive stress value of the main surface is 25 MPa or less. It shows that it becomes 5 μm or less. Further, by polishing so that the surface compressive stress value of the main surface is 15 MPa or less, the flatness becomes 3.0 μm or less, and further by polishing so that the surface surface compressive stress value of the main surface is 10 MPa or less. It is also shown that the degree is 2.0 μm or less.

さらに、2.0MPa(0.2kg/mm2)以上とすることがより好ましく、4.9MPa(0.5kg/mm2)以上とすることが最も好ましい。 On the other hand, the surface compressive stress value of the main surface after the polishing treatment is preferably 1.0 MPa (0.1 kg / mm 2 ) or more from the viewpoint of maintaining the minimum fracture strength of the glass substrate at a predetermined value or more. Further, more preferably to 2.0MPa (0.2kg / mm 2) or more, and most preferably 4.9MPa (0.5kg / mm 2) or more. The minimum breaking strength is a strength measured by a bending strength test by a ring-on-ring method. When the surface compressive stress value of the main surface is 1.0 MPa (0.1 kg / mm 2 ) or more, the minimum fracture strength in the bending strength test is 140 MPa or more. Further, when the surface compressive stress value is 2.0 MPa (0.2 kg / mm 2 ) or more, the minimum fracture strength is 190 MPa or more, and when it is 4.9 MPa (0.5 kg / mm 2 ) or more, the minimum fracture strength. Becomes 300 MPa or more. Therefore, in consideration of both the flatness and the minimum breaking strength, when a compressive stress layer having a thickness of more than 5 μm and less than 50 μm is formed on the main surface of the base substrate before polishing, the surface of the main surface It is most preferable to perform the polishing treatment in a range where the compressive stress value is 5 to 10 MPa.

In the polishing process, by partially removing the compressive stress layer on the main surface, there is a possibility that defects such as warpage of the base substrate may occur during or after the process. Therefore, the occurrence of the compression stress layer is suppressed by setting the thickness of the compressive stress layer to 60 μm or less, more preferably 50 μm or less and the compressive stress value to 206 MPa or less, more preferably 196 MPa or less in the chemical strengthening treatment. That is, if the compressive stress layer is thicker than 60 μm, the time required for removing the compressive stress layer by polishing becomes longer, and there is a difference in polishing amount between the front surface and the back surface of the base substrate during polishing. As the size increases, the possibility of occurrence of defects such as warpage increases. On the other hand, the base substrate suppresses an increase in the amount of polishing between the front surface and the back surface of the base substrate during polishing by shortening the time required for polishing by setting the thickness of the compressive stress layer to 50 μm or less. ing. Further, even when the surface compressive stress value is high enough to exceed 206 MPa, the time required for removing the compressive stress layer by polishing becomes longer. On the other hand, in the base substrate, the surface compressive stress value is set to 206 MPa or less, and the time required for polishing is shortened, thereby suppressing an increase in the difference in polishing amount between the front surface and the back surface of the base substrate during polishing. Yes.

In addition, when the compressive-stress layer of a main surface is partially removed, we are anxious about the strength fall of the glass substrate 11 obtained. However, the main cause of the damage of the glass substrate 11 is a crack existing at the outer peripheral edge or the inner peripheral edge, and the crack existing at the main surface is not a main cause of the damage. In particular, cracks present on the main surface are removed together with the compressive stress layer by the polishing treatment, and there are almost no cracks on the main surface after the polishing treatment. Therefore, even if most of the compressive stress layer on the main surface is removed, the influence on the strength of the glass substrate 11 is negligible, and the glass substrate 11 can maintain a necessary and sufficient strength. In order to maintain the necessary and sufficient strength, it is important to leave a part of the compressive stress layer on the main surface by partial removal, whereas the compressive stress layer on the main surface is completely removed. The glass substrate 11 is inevitable in strength reduction.

The effects exhibited by the above embodiment will be described below.
According to the glass substrate 11 of the embodiment, the polishing process is performed after the chemical strengthening process is performed at the time of manufacture. For this reason, the roughness of the main surface 13 generated by the chemical strengthening treatment can be removed by polishing, and the problems caused in the chemical strengthening step can be solved.

-The chemical strengthening treatment is performed after the etching treatment. For this reason, after making cracks that cause defects such as cracks and chips difficult to grow in advance by etching treatment, they can be made harder to grow by chemical strengthening treatment, which is required as an information recording medium. Strength can be maintained.

In addition, the polishing treatment does not completely remove the compressive stress layer on the main surface, but keeps a part of the compressive stress layer remaining. For this reason, the influence on the strength of the glass substrate 11, particularly the minimum breaking strength is negligible, and the necessary and sufficient strength required as an information recording medium can be maintained.

Further, the thickness of the compressive stress layer removed by polishing is 2 μm or more on each of the main surfaces 13 on the front surface side and the back surface side of the glass substrate 11. Therefore, the roughness due to the chemical strengthening treatment can be almost certainly removed, and the cleanliness and smoothness of the main surface 13 can be improved.

-The glass substrate 11 is made of aluminosilicate glass. For this reason, when chemically strengthening until it becomes the intensity | strength desired for the glass substrate 11, the process can be performed in low temperature and a short time.

In the chemical strengthening treatment, the compressive stress layer is preferably formed with a thickness of 3 μm or more, more preferably 10 μm or more, and the surface compressive stress value of each surface of the glass substrate 11, particularly the end surface, is 4.9 MPa or more. . For this reason, it is possible to maintain a surface compressive stress value that can sufficiently suppress the growth of the crack with respect to the crack present in the outer peripheral edge or the inner peripheral edge, which is the main cause of the breakage of the glass substrate 11. The necessary and sufficient strength required as a recording medium can be maintained.

In the chemical strengthening treatment, the compressive stress layer is formed with a thickness of 60 μm or less, and the surface compressive stress value is 196.1 MPa or less. For this reason, it is suppressed that processing time more than necessary in the polishing process after the chemical strengthening process is suppressed, and the occurrence of problems such as warping of the base substrate during the polishing process can be suppressed.

-After the polishing treatment, the surface compressive stress value of the main surface 13 is maintained at 1.0 MPa or more. Therefore, the influence on the strength of the glass substrate 11 can be minimized.

In addition, after the polishing treatment, the surface compressive stress value of each main surface 13 is 25 MPa or less, so that the warpage of the glass substrate 11 can be reliably suppressed and a glass substrate with high flatness can be obtained. .

In addition, the etching amount in the etching process is 1 μm or more and 20 μm or less. For this reason, generation | occurrence | production of malfunctions, such as the shape of a crack being not fully corrected, cracks continuing, or a main surface being roughened by an etching, can be prevented.

In the etching process, an acidic aqueous solution containing hydrofluoric acid is used as the processing liquid. Since the acidic aqueous solution containing hydrofluoric acid has high etching ability with respect to the glass composition, the etching treatment can be reliably performed in a short time.

In addition, before performing the etching treatment, a pretreatment using an alkaline aqueous solution containing a surfactant as a treatment liquid is performed. In this pretreatment, deposits attached to the main surface and the like are removed, so that it is possible to prevent etching from becoming nonuniform due to such deposits.

Examples that further embody the above-described embodiment will be described below.
(Production of glass substrate)
A base substrate was manufactured through a disk processing step and an end processing step. Then, the alkali cleaning process, the etching process, and the chemical strengthening process were performed with respect to the same substrate in order.

In the alkali cleaning treatment, each of Examples 1 to 28 and Comparative Examples 1 to 4 was cleaned by immersing in an alkaline detergent at room temperature for about 2 minutes while applying an ultrasonic wave (LGL made by Yokohama Oils and Fats). did. After the alkali cleaning treatment, a rinse treatment with pure water was performed. In addition, Example 29 was not subjected to alkaline detergent treatment.

In the etching process, each of Examples 1 to 20 and Comparative Examples 1 to 3 is etched for 10 minutes in a 1% by mass hydrofluoric acid aqueous solution heated to 40 to 50 ° C. so that the etching amount is about 5 μm. did. For each of Examples 21, 22, and 25 to 29, the etching process was performed while changing the processing time so that the etching amount was different. In Comparative Example 4, no etching treatment was performed.

For Example 23, a buffered hydrofluoric acid aqueous solution in which 0.05% by mass of ammonium fluoride having a buffering action was added to a 1% by mass hydrofluoric acid aqueous solution as an etching treatment solution, the etching amount was about 5 μm. Then, etching was performed for about 8 minutes in a state heated to 40 to 50 ° C.

About Example 24, it etched for about 250 minutes in the state heated to 50-60 degreeC using 1 mass% potassium hydroxide aqueous solution as an etching process liquid so that the etching amount might be set to about 5 micrometers.

In the chemical strengthening treatment and the polishing treatment, for each of Examples 1 to 20 and Comparative Examples 3 and 4, the composition of the chemical strengthening salt, the treatment temperature, and further treatment are performed so that the thickness of the compressive stress layer and the compressive stress value become various values After performing chemical strengthening treatment at different times, the main surface was polished so that a part of the compressive stress layer remained on the main surface. In Comparative Example 2, the main surface was polished so as to remove all of the compressive stress layer on the main surface. In addition, about the comparative example 1, the grinding | polishing process to the main surface was performed without performing a chemical strengthening process (henceforth, the glass substrate which does not perform a chemical strengthening process is described as an unstrengthened board | substrate).

About each of Examples 21-29, the chemical strengthening process and the polishing process similar to Example 3 were performed. In Comparative Example 4, the same chemical strengthening treatment and polishing treatment as in Example 14 were performed.
The obtained glass substrate had an outer diameter, an inner diameter, and a thickness of 65 × 20 × 0.635 mm. The glass substrates except for Example 20 were all made of aluminosilicate glass (abbreviated as AS in Table 2), and only Example 20 was made of soda lime glass (abbreviated as SL in Table 2). . Table 2 shows the chemical strengthening treatment conditions and the polishing amount per one side in the polishing treatment step.

Figure 2005174500
Figure 2005174500
For each of Examples 1 to 20 and Comparative Examples 1 to 4, the thickness of the compressive stress layer at the end, the surface compressive stress value at the end, and the surface compressive stress value at the main surface were measured and shown in Table 3. In addition, an edge part is a part except a main surface, and specifically, the outer peripheral edge part, the end surface of an inner peripheral edge part, and a chamfer hit it. The surface compressive stress value and the thickness of the compressive stress layer were measured by a parallel Nicol method. The compressive stress layer thickness was defined as the distance from the outermost surface of the substrate to the point of zero stress value (the point at which the stress changes from compressive stress to tensile stress) on the compressive stress curve.

About each of Examples 1-20 and Comparative Examples 1-4, the minimum fracture strength in a bending strength test, the crack generation frequency and flatness in a heat shock test were measured. The minimum breaking strength and crack occurrence frequency in each test were calculated based on data of 25 to 100 substrates. The flatness was calculated as an average value of 25 substrates. The bending strength test is performed by a ring-on-ring method. From the load required for the breakage of the substrate broken at the lowest load in the tested population of 25 to 100 sheets, the edge of the main surface from the edge of the substrate ( The stress applied to the range up to the edge) was calculated and taken as the minimum breaking strength. In Comparative Example 4, only the minimum breaking strength was measured.

The crack occurrence frequency was measured by a heat shock test. This heat shock test is a test method in which a thermal shock with a temperature difference of 370 ° C. is applied to the outer periphery of the glass substrate. Specifically, after heating a plurality of glass substrates placed in a metal holder to a predetermined temperature (= room temperature + 370 ° C.), the metal holder held at room temperature is slowly covered from above and brought into contact with the outer periphery, The number of glass substrates in which cracks occurred from the part was counted. The crack occurrence frequency was determined from the number of cracks and the number of parameters. The above results are shown in Table 3.

Note that when the film is formed on the information recording medium by sputtering, the glass substrate is heated to a high temperature in order to improve the characteristics of the medium. When the heated glass substrate is returned to the metal holder at room temperature after film formation, a thermal shock due to a temperature difference is applied to the glass substrate. The heat shock test is a simulation of this.

Figure 2005174500
Figure 2005174500
(Minimum breaking strength)
From the results in Table 3, the lowest breaking strength of the bending strength test in the example was 140 MPa in Example 18 and the highest was 333 MPa in Example 7. This value of 140 MPa is the minimum strength required for an information recording medium in order to prevent damage during high-speed rotation.

In contrast, in Comparative Example 1, the main surface of the unreinforced substrate was polished by 10 μm, and in Comparative Example 2, a 15 μm-thick compressive stress layer was formed in the chemical strengthening process, and then each main surface was removed by 25 μm by polishing treatment. The surface compressive stress value of the main surface is 0 MPa. In any example, the compressive stress layer is not formed on the main surface.

The minimum breaking strength of the bending strength test was 105 MPa in Comparative Example 1 and 118 MPa in Comparative Example 2. All values were less than 140 MPa, which is the minimum breaking strength required for an information recording medium.

(Heat shock test)
The crack occurrence frequency in the heat shock test is at most 5%. If the occurrence frequency of cracks in the heat shock test is 5% or less, the glass substrate is not cracked even by this thermal shock.

On the other hand, the crack occurrence frequency in the comparative example was 10% in comparative example 1 and 7% in comparative example 2. The frequency of these occurrences exceeded 5%, which is considered to prevent the glass substrate from being cracked by thermal shock.

(Flatness)
Further, the flatness was in the range of 4.5 μm in all the examples, and no large warp or the like was generated, and the glass substrate had a high flatness.

On the other hand, in Comparative Examples 1 and 2, since the compressive stress layer was not present on the main surface, the flatness was good. In Comparative Example 3, the compressed layer thickness exceeded 60 μm, and the flatness was 5.0 μm, which did not satisfy the required flatness.

As described above, the glass substrate on which the compressive stress layer is not formed on the main surface does not satisfy the strength and thermal shock resistance required as an information recording medium. The reason why sufficient strength cannot be obtained with a glass substrate having no compressive stress layer on the main surface is presumed as follows. First, it is considered that a glass substrate that has not been subjected to a chemical strengthening treatment does not have a sufficient strength because a compressive stress layer is not formed at the end. Next, the glass substrate from which the compressive stress layer on the main surface has been completely removed has stress concentrated at the boundary between the end and the main surface in the bending strength test, and even if there is a reinforcing layer at the end, It is considered that destruction is likely to occur from the main surface portion in the vicinity of the boundary of the main surface.

(Consideration on glass composition)
Comparing the effects of the glass composition in Example 20 and Example 2, the soda-lime glass of Example 20 requires a processing temperature of 400 ° C. and a processing time of 6 hours in order to obtain a compressive stress layer thickness of 15 μm. In contrast, in the aluminosilicate glass of Example 2, it can be seen that the same compressive stress layer can be formed at a processing temperature of 310 ° C. and a processing time of 1 hour. Thus, aluminosilicate glass is easy to chemically strengthen, and a desired compressive stress layer can be obtained at a relatively low temperature in a short time. For this reason, it is economical and can be preferably applied by the present invention.

(Considerations about end compressive stress layer thickness and end surface compressive stress)
From the results of Examples 1 to 20, the minimum stress strength of the compressive stress layer and the bending strength test will be described. It was shown that the minimum breaking strength of the bending strength test exceeds 140 MPa when the compressive stress layer thickness is at least 3 μm or more. Furthermore, it was shown that the minimum breaking strength exceeds 190 MPa when the compressive stress layer thickness is at least 5 μm or more. Furthermore, it was shown that the minimum fracture strength exceeds 300 MPa when the compressive stress layer thickness is at least 10 μm or more. All of these satisfy the strength required for information recording media. In consideration of handling damage that occurs in the transport process and the like, the minimum breaking strength is preferably 190 MPa or more. In other words, the thickness of the compressive stress layer at the end is preferably 5 μm or more.

FIG. 5 shows the relationship between the end compressive stress layer thickness and the minimum breaking strength of the bending strength test. When the compressive stress layer thickness exceeds 10 μm, the minimum fracture strength converges to about 300 to 350 MPa. Thus, when the compressive stress layer thickness exceeds 10 μm, it is more preferable because it is stable with high strength.

From comparison between Examples 18 and 19 and Examples 1 to 17, end surface compressive stress values will be described. When the surface compressive stress at the end is 9.8 MPa (1 kg / mm 2 ) or more, the minimum fracture strength is 190 MPa or more, which is more preferable. Further, when the end surface compressive stress is 9.8 MPa (1 kg / mm 2 ) or more and 196 MPa (20 kg / mm 2 ) or less, the crack occurrence frequency in the heat shock test becomes 0%, which is more preferable.

(Consideration of flatness)
The relationship between the flatness of the glass substrate and the compressive stress value of the main surface after the polishing treatment is shown in FIG. 4 shows the flatness of the glass substrate and the compression layer thickness of the main surface, FIG. 6 shows the relationship between the flatness and the compressive stress value.

From FIG. 6, it is found that when the compressive stress value before polishing is 9.8 to 49 MPa, a predetermined relationship exists between the surface compressive stress value after polishing and the flatness. When the compressive stress value before polishing is less than 9.8 MPa or more than 49 MPa, a specific relationship cannot be found.

In general, considering the warpage of the glass substrate, it is considered that the warp is caused by the difference in stress between the front and back surfaces of the glass substrate. As described above, in the glass substrate according to the present invention, since the compressive stress layer on the main surface has only a small thickness, it is difficult to obtain an accurate surface compressive stress value on each of the front and back surfaces.

Here, as shown in FIG. 6, the relationship between the compressive stress value and flatness after polishing is found to be improved as the compressive stress value after polishing decreases. From this relationship, it is derived that the flatness after polishing is good when the compressive stress value after polishing is small.

研磨前の圧縮応力値が9.8MPa(1.0kg/mm2)以上49MPa(5.0kg/mm2)以下で、かつ研磨後の圧縮応力値が19.6MPa(2.0kg/mm2)以下のとき、平坦度は4μm以下となり、より好ましい。
The relationship between the compressive stress value after polishing and the flatness will be described below.
The compressive stress value before polishing is 9.8 MPa (1.0 kg / mm 2 ) or more and 49 MPa (5.0 kg / mm 2 ) or less, and the compressive stress value after polishing is 19.6 MPa (2.0 kg / mm 2 ). In the following cases, the flatness is 4 μm or less, which is more preferable. Further, when the compressive stress value after polishing is 14.7 MPa (1.5 kg / mm 2 ) or less, the flatness is 2.5 μm or less, which is more preferable. Furthermore, when the compressive stress value after polishing is 9.8 MPa (1.0 kg / mm 2 ) or less, the flatness is 2.0 μm or less, which is more preferable.

FIG. 7 shows the relationship between the flatness after the polishing treatment and the thickness of the compressive stress layer at the end of the glass substrate. When the compressive stress layer thickness is 50 μm or less and the main surface compressive stress is 19.6 MPa (2.0 kg / mm 2 ), or when the compressive stress layer thickness is 40 μm or less, the flatness is 4 μm or less, which is more preferable. When the compressive stress layer thickness is 45 μm or less and the surface compressive stress value of the main surface is 14.7 MPa (1.5 kg / mm 2 ) or less, or the compressive stress layer thickness is 40 μm or less and the surface compressive stress value of the main surface is When the pressure is 19.6 MPa (2.0 kg / mm 2 ) or less, the flatness is 3 μm or less, which is more preferable. When the compressive stress layer thickness is 30 μm or less and the surface compressive stress value of the main surface is 14.7 MPa (1.5 kg / mm 2 ) or less, the flatness is 2 μm or less, which is more preferable.

With respect to Examples 3, 21, 22, and 25 to 28 in which the etching conditions before the chemical strengthening treatment were changed, the durability of the edge strength was examined. In Comparative Example 4, no etching process is performed. In order to examine the durability of the edge strength, a bending strength test was performed on the sample after the chuck damage test to evaluate the minimum breaking strength. The chuck damage test is an endurance test of an inner peripheral end portion assuming damage received during handling of a glass substrate. For example, assuming that the inner peripheral end is chucked when cleaning and transporting, the inner peripheral chucking operation of the glass substrate is performed using a scrubbing machine having a mechanism for chucking the inner peripheral end of the glass substrate. I went twice. The results are shown in Table 4.

Figure 2005174500
Figure 2005174500
When the etching amount is 1 μm or more and 20 μm or less (Examples 3, 22, 25, and 26), even after the chuck damage test, the minimum fracture strength is larger than 190 Mpa, and the flatness after etching becomes less than 2 μm. preferable.

In Example 21 in which the etching amount is less than 1 μm, the minimum breaking strength after the chuck damage test is smaller than 190 Mpa. This is presumably because blunting of the tip shape of the crack present at the end is insufficient.

In Examples 27 and 28 in which the etching amount exceeds 20 μm, the flatness after etching becomes 2 μm or more. This is presumably because the balance between stress and strain remaining on the main surface of the substrate was lost on the front and back surfaces due to excessive etching, causing warpage.

In addition, excessive etching leads to a decrease in strength. For example, if it exceeds 30 μm, it can be seen that the minimum fracture strength after the chuck damage test is less than 200 MPa. From this result, it is preferable not to etch excessively from the viewpoint of strength. The reason why the minimum fracture strength after the chuck damage test is reduced by excessive etching is considered to be that the crack width is expanded by excessive etching and continues to the adjacent crack. If it overlaps with the adjacent crack, the overlapping ridge line part becomes an acute angle (projection shape), so that stress concentrates there and it is easy to generate a new crack.

In view of economy, the etching amount is preferably 20 μm or less. When the thickness exceeds 20 μm, the etching solution has a short life, or a problem such as a long processing time due to a low etching rate occurs during continuous production.

From the comparison of Examples 3, 23, and 24, etching can be performed with KOH, but it takes a long time of 250 minutes. In order to perform etching in a short time, it is more preferable to treat with an acidic aqueous solution containing HF. In Comparative Example 4 where the etching treatment was not performed, the minimum fracture strength was less than 140 MPa and did not satisfy the required strength even though the compressive stress layer was formed to 60 μm by the chemical strengthening treatment.

Examples 29 and 3 were compared to evaluate the relationship between the presence or absence of the alkaline detergent treatment before the etching treatment and the flatness after the etching treatment. The results are shown in Table 5.

Figure 2005174500
Figure 2005174500
In Example 29 in which the alkaline detergent treatment was not performed before the etching treatment, the flatness after the etching treatment exceeded 2 μm, and the flatness after the subsequent chemical strengthening step and polishing step exceeded 3 μm. The reason why the flatness deteriorates is considered as follows. That is, dirt such as a grinding fluid and organic matter adheres to the substrate surface after the edge processing step. When etching with an acidic aqueous solution containing HF, dirt exhibits a masking effect, and non-uniform etching proceeds. Therefore, the flatness after etching deteriorates, and even if polishing is performed after chemical strengthening, it is considered that the flatness exceeds 3 μm.
