Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a light source device, a method for manufacturing the light source device, and a projection display device, and more particularly to a light source device including a solid light source such as a semiconductor light emitting element.
Projection-type display such as a projector that displays light by causing light emitted from the light source device to enter a light modulation unit such as a liquid crystal light valve and to enlarge and project the image light modulated by the light modulation unit onto a screen by a projection lens or the like. The device is widely known. A solid light source such as an LED light source is employed as a light source used in the light source device of the projection display device. Since such an LED light source has a random polarization direction, when used as a light source of a liquid crystal device such as a liquid crystal light valve, half of the light source is absorbed by the polarizing plate.
In the above-mentioned patent document, the light utilization efficiency is improved by using a film-like reflective polarizing member. However, when this film-like member is incorporated in a light source device, the film-like member is not deteriorated due to heat generated by light emission. There is a risk of degeneration.
The present invention has been made in view of the above problems, and has a configuration capable of converting light from a light emitting element into predetermined polarized light with high efficiency and having sufficient durability even when heat generated by light emission occurs. An object of the present invention is to provide a light source device. It is another object of the present invention to provide a method capable of manufacturing such a light source device with high efficiency and a highly reliable projection display device including the light source device.
In order to solve the above problems, a light source device of the present invention includes a light emitting element, and a reflective polarizing plate composed of a striped metal film or a dielectric multilayer film on a light emitting side of the light emitting element. It is characterized by comprising. According to such a light source device, it is possible to irradiate a predetermined polarized light. Therefore, for example, when used as a light source (illumination device) of a liquid crystal device such as a liquid crystal light valve, it is possible to increase the light use efficiency. . And since it is the structure which provided the reflection type polarizing plate in the light source device especially, compared with the case where it provides independently between a light source device and a liquid crystal device, or the case where a polarizing plate is provided in a liquid crystal device, it is a light source. It is also possible to reduce light leaking from the apparatus. Furthermore, since the present invention uses a metal film or a dielectric multilayer film instead of the conventional film-like reflective polarizing member, even when heat generation due to light emission occurs in the light emitting element, the reflection is performed. There is almost no fear that the mold polarizing plate will deteriorate or change its characteristics due to heat.
The light emitting element is formed on a predetermined substrate, and the metal film or the dielectric multilayer film is formed on the opposite side of the substrate from the light emitting element, and in the in-plane direction of the substrate than the wavelength of light. It can be arranged in stripes with a short period. In this case, since the reflective polarizing plate is formed on the rear surface of the substrate with respect to the light emitting element, the light emitting element on the substrate is exposed, and the electrode of the light emitting element can be easily taken out. In addition, since the reflective polarizing plate is provided on the opposite side of the substrate on which the light emitting element is formed, light leaking from the light source device can be reduced as described above.
In the reflective polarizing plate, a transparent protective film may be disposed on the metal film or the dielectric multilayer film. This makes it possible to protect the stripe-shaped metal film or the dielectric multilayer film, and also to flatten the surface, and appropriately design the refractive index difference from the metal film or the like by selecting the protective film. It becomes possible.
A reflective film may be formed on the light emitting element side of the reflective polarizing plate. In this case, the polarized light reflected by the reflective polarizing plate is reflected by the reflective film. Therefore, for example, the light utilization efficiency is higher than when an absorption type polarizing plate is used. In other words, the other polarized light reflected by the reflective polarizing plate is reflected by the reflective film and returns to the reflective polarizing plate again. However, since the polarization direction changes slightly during the reflection, By repeating, the polarization axis is changed to a transmissive direction, and is emitted from the light source device as polarized light in a predetermined transmission axis direction. In addition, the reflective film in this case can be comprised with metal reflective members, such as aluminum, and also includes a plate-shaped reflective board other than a film form.
A λ / 4 phase difference plate may be formed between the reflective polarizing plate and the reflective film. In this case, polarized light having a predetermined polarization axis can be extracted from the light source device with higher efficiency. That is, the polarized light reflected by the reflective polarizing plate (referred to as polarized light A) becomes circularly polarized light (referred to as circularly polarized light B) by the λ / 4 retardation plate, and the circularly polarized light B is reflected by the reflective film. With reversal of polarization direction. Therefore, when reflected by the reflecting film, the circularly polarized light is rotated in the opposite direction to the circularly polarized light B (referred to as circularly polarized light C). When the circularly polarized light C passes through the λ / 4 retardation plate again, The polarized light D having a polarization axis different from that of A by 90 ° is incident on the reflective polarizing plate, and this polarized light D can be transmitted through the reflective polarizing plate, so that the light utilization efficiency is further increased.
In the reflective polarizing plate, the surface of the metal film or the dielectric multilayer film facing the light emitting element may be provided with an uneven shape. In this case, since the light reflected by the reflective polarizing plate is scattered, when returning to the reflective polarizing plate again, it has a polarization axis in the transmission axis direction of the reflective polarizing plate. It becomes easy to become polarized light, and therefore it is possible to improve the light utilization efficiency.
The reflective polarizing plate may be formed of the metal film, and the metal film may be configured as an electrode for applying an electric field to the light emitting element. In this case, it is not necessary to separately provide an electrode for applying an electric field to the light emitting element, and the configuration of the light source device is very simple.
The reflective polarizing plate is formed of the dielectric multilayer film, and the dielectric multilayer film is a laminate in which a relatively high refractive index material layer and a low refractive index material layer are alternately laminated. And the laminated body can be arranged in a stripe shape in a plane. Note that a material layer mainly composed of titanium oxide can be used as the high refractive index material layer, and a material layer mainly composed of silicon oxide can be used as the low refractive index material layer.
Next, the manufacturing method of the light source device of the present invention includes a step of forming a metal film or a dielectric multilayer film on a substrate in a stripe shape, and a side of the substrate on which the metal film or the dielectric multilayer film is formed. And a step of forming a light emitting element on the opposite side. In this case, the metal film or the dielectric multilayer film constituting the reflective polarizing plate is formed on the base material before forming the light emitting element on the base material. Can be reduced.
For example, in the step of forming a metal film or a dielectric multilayer film on the substrate, the metal film or the dielectric multilayer film is formed in a stripe shape with a period shorter than the wavelength of light by a two-beam interference exposure method. In this case, if the light emitting element is first formed on the substrate, the light emitting element may be damaged at the time of exposure. However, in the present invention, such a problem can be avoided.
Next, a projection type display device of the present invention is characterized by comprising the above-described light source device. Specifically, the light source device includes a light modulation device that modulates light emitted from the light source device, and a projection device that projects light modulated by the light modulation device. Can do. Such a projection display device includes a light source device with excellent light utilization efficiency, and particularly when a liquid crystal light valve (spatial light modulation element) using polarized light is used as the light modulation device, The utilization efficiency is very high.
Hereinafter, embodiments according to the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings. In addition, in each figure, in order to make each layer and each member the size which can be recognized on drawing, the scale is varied for every layer and each member.
FIG. 1 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing a schematic configuration of a light source device as an embodiment of the present invention. The
The
An n-
On the other hand, the reflective
Such a reflective
According to such a
In this embodiment, since the reflective
Further, the p-side electrode 7 (and the n-side electrode 4, the n-
In the present embodiment, each of the
Moreover, as shown in FIG. 4, you may provide the unevenness |
Next, a method for manufacturing the
As shown in FIG. 5, first, a metal
Then, the
The reflective
And the light emitting element 16 (refer FIG. 1) is formed by the well-known method in the other side (back surface side) of the
Next, different embodiments of the light source device will be described.
FIG. 7 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing a schematic configuration of a
In the
That is, the polarized light A reflected by the reflective
When such a λ / 4
Next, FIG. 8 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing a schematic configuration of a modification of the reflective
The
As described above, when the

FIG. 9 is an enlarged view showing a schematic configuration of a projection display device as one embodiment of the present invention, and the
Light emitted from the LED
