Description
【0001】

(Background of the Invention)
The present invention relates generally to the field of electronic data storage and retrieval systems. In particular, the invention relates to a novel construction of the shielded magnetoresistive element of the transducing head.
[0002]
In electronic data storage and reading systems, the transducing head typically includes a reader portion having a magnetoresistive (MR) sensor for reading magnetically encoded information stored on a magnetic disk. The MR sensor can be an anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) sensor or a giant magnetoresistive (GMR) sensor. AMR sensors typically have a single MR layer formed from a ferromagnetic material. Generally, GMR sensors have multiple layers of ferromagnetic material.
[0003]
When the MR sensor is placed in close proximity to a rotating magnetized storage disk, the MR layer is exposed to a magnetic bit field previously written on the disk surface. Exposing the MR element to a magnetic bit field in this way affects the magnetization vector of the MR element. As the current passes through the MR element, a change in resistance is detected as a change in voltage. Changes in the resistance of the MR layer are attributable to changes in the magnetization vector of the MR element. The external circuitry then converts the voltage information into the appropriate format and manipulates the information into a series of binary ones and zeros representing the bits recorded on the storage disk.
[0004]
The information read by the MR element is first stored on the magnetic disk along a concentric circular track or microtrack. A bit is the smallest unit of data stored in each microtrack. It is clear that only a finite amount of bits can be stored along the microtrack, and it is desirable to maximize the number of bits. The number of bits written on one of those microtracks along a distance of one inch is called the linear bit density. It is also desirable to maximize the number of microtracks on a disk. The number of microtracks per inch along the radius of the disk is called track density. The area density is the product of the line bit density and the track density. One way to achieve the goal of increasing the total amount of information stored on a magnetic disk is to increase the areal density, ie, increase the number of bits stored in the microtrack, increase the amount of microtrack on the disk To do, or to increase both.
[0005]
However, as the areal density increases, it becomes increasingly difficult to read magnetically stored bits without reading neighboring stored bits. As an ever-increasing amount of information is stored on the magnetized storage disk, the MR sensor becomes more difficult to read the stored information separately without reading noise from adjacent stored information.
[0006]
This problem can be somewhat alleviated by the MR sensor itself by placing soft magnetic material above and below the MR element to shield the element from the effects of the bit field of adjacent bits on a particular microtrack. During a read operation, these top and bottom shields absorb all stray fields arising from the downtrack, so that only information stored directly below the MR sensor on a particular microtrack of magnetic media or disk is read by the MR sensor. Typically guaranteed to be read.
[0007]
Although the top and bottom shields typically shield well as the line bit density increases, these shields are adjacent to the micro-tracks that are read by the MR sensor at a particular time as the track density increases. Does not properly shield stray magnetic fields from the magnetically stored bits of the microtrack. As the track density increases, i.e., when adjacent microtracks are closer together, it is imperative that the MR sensor is reading from only a single microtrack at any given time and not from adjacent microtracks. Required by As the track pitch increases, that is, as the spacing between adjacent microtracks becomes smaller, read errors increase. An MR sensor that accurately reads high track pitch media is a necessary improvement in recording technology.
[0008]
(Summary of the Invention)
The present invention introduces a novel structure of a shielded MR sensor for the read element of a magnetic head. The MR sensor includes an MR element, which further has a top shield, a bottom shield, and first and second side shields. The first and second side shields reduce the response signal in the MR sensor due to adjacent microtracks that are not intended to be read at a particular point in time. This allows accurate reading by the MR sensor even when the track density is relatively high.
[0009]
(Detailed description)
The present invention is specifically contemplated for use with the disk drive 10 shown in FIG. The disk drive assembly 10 includes at least one

[0015]
In general, when a sensor is reading from a particular microtrack at a certain point in time, the adjacent microtrack, or "sidetrack", is far enough from the sensor that the magnetic field in the sensor is attributable to the magnetic field source in the sidetrack. The intensity is not high enough to affect sensor readings. However, as the microtrack density increases, the signal strength in the sensor due to the magnetic field source in the sidetrack becomes high enough to affect the sensor reading, causing errors. The strength of the magnetic field in the sensor at a position corresponding to MT10 is typically not high enough to affect the reading in the sensor of the side track. However, as the strength of the magnetic field at the position corresponding to MT10-MT50 increases, the strength of the magnetic field from the side track is strong enough to affect the reading in the sensor. Thus, as the microtrack density increases so that the sidetracks are at MT10-MT50 relative to the sensors, the magnetic field sources in these sidetracks will cause errors when reading the sensors. This "side-reading effect" prevents accurate reading of the information stored in the microtrack to be read.

In the MR sensor 50, the first and second side shields 56 and 58 are soft magnetic materials and are in direct contact with the first and second sensor ends 84 and 86. The first and second sensor ends 84 and 86 are connected by a copper spacer 80. Typically, the first and second sensor ends 84 and 86 and the copper spacer 80 have a lower resistance but higher copper reflectivity to enhance GMR due to GMR side effects. [0019]
By adding the first and second side shields 56 and 58, the attenuation of the medium magnetic field from the side track is enhanced. The solid line in FIG. 6 shows the response of the MR sensor 50 due to the magnetic field source in the microtrack when the relative position of the microtrack and the MR sensor 50 changes. 3, the Y axis of FIG. 6 shows the relative strength of the magnetic field in the MR sensor 50 due to the magnetic field source in the microtrack, while the X axis shows the MR sensor 50 relative to the microtrack. In the radial direction. The relationship between the strength of the magnetic field as shown in FIG. 3 and the position of the prior art sensor with respect to the microtrack is 1 / r 2 (This relationship shown in FIG. 3 is re-represented as a dotted line above the solid line in FIG. 6 for ease of comparison), but with the strength of the magnetic field and the MR sensor 50 relative to the microtrack. The relationship with position is attenuation 1 / r 3 (Image dipole mixed with exponential decay), where r is equal to the radial distance between the edge of the MR sensor 50 and the magnetic source of the microtrack. In this manner, the MR sensor 50 significantly increases the transition decay of the microtrack as compared to conventional sensors.
[0020]
The relationship of this new decay to the strength of the magnetic field, as shown by the comparison between the dashed curve in FIG. 6 (showing the response of the prior art MR sensor 30) and the solid curve (showing the response of the MR sensor 50). This corresponds to a much smaller MT10 to MT50 relationship. In this way, MT10-MT50 in MR sensor 50 is reduced such that the effect of sidetracking on signal strength in MR sensor 50 is significantly reduced even when the microtrack density increases. .
[0021]
FIG. 7 shows an alternative MR sensor 90 according to the present invention. The MR sensor 90 includes a top / side shield 92, a bottom / side shield 96, and an MR stack 100. The top / side shield 92 includes a top shield region 93 and a side shield region 94, while the bottom / side shield 96 includes a bottom region 97 and a side shield region 98. In this manner, top / side shield 92 functions as both a top and side shield, and bottom / side shield 96 functions as both a bottom and side shield, as can be readily appreciated. Top / side shield 92, bottom / side shield 96, and MR stack 100 are insulated from each other by leader gap 102. Top / side shield 92 and bottom / side shield 96 substantially surround MR stack 100.
[0022]
The top / side shield 92 forms a boundary with the leader gap 102 and the MR stack 100, thereby defining first, second and third corners 104, 106, 108. Similarly, bottom / side shield 96 bounds reader gap 102 and MR stack 100, thereby defining fourth, fifth and sixth corners 110, 112, 114. Again, the MR stack 100 can be any sensor stack, for example, any type of CIP or CPP stack. FIG. 7 shows a spin valve including a pinned layer 116, a pinned layer 118, a ruthenium layer 120, a reference layer 122, a copper spacer 124, an MR element 126, a first sensor end 128, and a second sensor end 130. Only the stack is shown for illustrative purposes. The MR sensor 90 is uniquely configured to allow for increased microtrack density without causing a read error from the side track to the MR sensor 90.
[0023]
MR sensor 90 provides improved performance characteristics as described for MR sensor 50 of FIG. In MR sensor 90, top / side shield 92 is an integrated top and side shield. In this manner, the top / side shield 92 provides the known advantages of the top shield, while also providing the benefits of the present invention of the side shield. Similarly, in MR sensor 90, bottom / side shield 96 is an integrated bottom and side shield. In this way, the bottom / side shield 96 provides the known advantages of a bottom shield, while also providing the advantages of the present invention of a side shield. Top / side shield 92 and bottom / side shield 96 enhance the attenuation of the media magnetic field from the side track, as did first and second side shields 56 and 58 in MR sensor 50. Therefore, the response of the MR sensor 90 due to the magnetic field source in the microtrack when the relative position of the microtrack in the MR sensor 90 changes can be shown by the solid curve in FIG.
[0024]
MR sensor 90 also offers the advantage that corner domain formation is smaller than MR sensor 50. In the MR sensor 50, the first, second, third and fourth corners 64, 66, 68, 70 of the first and second side shields 56 and 58 are somewhat acute. In other words, the corners 64, 66, 68, 70 are only slightly larger than 90 °. Such sharp corner areas may have domain problems in these areas of the first and second side shields 56 and 58. The structure of the MR sensor 90 improves these areas and reduces domain issues in the corner areas of the shield. In particular, the first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth corner regions 104, 106, 108, 110, 112, 114 are more obtuse, ie they are significantly greater than 90 °. In this manner, domain issues involving the sharper corner regions of the first and second side shields 56 and 58 in the MR sensor 50 are reduced in the MR sensor 90.
[0025]
FIG. 8 shows another alternative MR sensor 140 based on the MR sensor 90 according to the present invention. MR sensor 140 includes a top / side shield 142, a bottom / side shield 146, and an MR stack 150. The top / side shield 142 includes a top shield region 143 and a side shield region 144, while the bottom / side shield 146 includes a bottom region 147 and a side shield region 148. Thus, as in MR sensor 90, top / side shield 142 functions as both a top and side shield, and bottom / side shield 146 functions as both a bottom and side shield. Top / side shield 142, bottom / side shield 146, and MR stack 150 are insulated from each other by leader gap 152. Top / side shield 142 and bottom / side shield 146 substantially surround MR stack 150.
[0026]
The top / side shield 142 forms a boundary with the leader gap 152 and the MR stack 150, thereby forming the first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth corners 154, 156, 158, 160, 162, 164 are defined. Similarly, the bottom / side shield 146 forms a boundary with the leader gap 152 and the MR stack 150, thereby providing seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth corners 166, 168, 170, 172. , 174, 176 are defined. MR stack 150 is similar to that described for MR stack 100 of FIG.
[0027]
MR sensor 140 provides enhanced performance characteristics as described for MR sensors 50 and 90. Further, the improved shield corner from MR sensor 50 to MR sensor 90 is further improved in MR sensor 140. In the MR sensor 140, all of the first through twelfth corners 154-176 are even more obtuse, ie, all of these corners are closer to 180 ° than 90 °. In this way, domain issues involving the sharper corner regions of the first and second side shields 56 and 58 in the MR sensor 50 are reduced in the MR sensor 140.
[0028]
Side shields 56 and 58 in MR sensor 50, top / side shield 92 and bottom / side shield 96 in MR sensor 90, and top / side shield 142 and bottom / side shield 146 in MR sensor 140 are made of nickel-iron alloy Is typically manufactured from a soft magnetic material such as Therefore, these side shields have low anisotropy and high transmittance. These material properties allow the side shields to enhance the transition attenuation of each microtrack of the MR sensor.
[0029]
The MR sensors 50 and 90 as shown in FIGS. 4 and 7 are cross sections viewed parallel to the
