Description

【0001】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device, and more particularly to a liquid crystal display device used in a situation where the illuminance of external light applied to a liquid crystal panel from the outside changes, such as a car navigation device.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Conventionally, liquid crystal display devices are roughly classified into a transmission type, a reflection type, and a transflective type. These types of liquid crystal display devices are selected and used in accordance with the illuminance of external light in the environment in which they are used. In general, a reflection type liquid crystal display device using external light is used for a liquid crystal display device mainly used in a bright environment such as outdoors. On the other hand, as a liquid crystal display device mainly used in an environment where external light is not as bright as outdoors such as indoors, a transmissive liquid crystal display device using illumination light from a backlight is used.
[0003]
In recent years, a transflective liquid crystal display device that combines a transmissive type and a reflective type is used in mobile devices such as mobile phones that can be used anywhere.
[0004]
Among such mobile devices, some of the on-vehicle devices such as a car navigation device are used in an environment where the ambient brightness is extremely different, for example, during the day and at night. A transflective liquid crystal display device used in such an environment can be used by switching between a reflective mode and a transmissive mode, and can also adjust a light emission amount of a light source itself in a transmissive mode. (For example, see Patent Document 1).
[0005]
In this case, as a light source of the backlight, it is common to use only a cold cathode tube because high brightness can be secured.
[0006]
In a liquid crystal display device using the cold cathode tube as a light source of a backlight, the brightness of the cold cathode tube is adjusted by PWM (Pulse Width Modulation: pulse width gradation) by an inverter circuit. Here, the PWM dimming is a dimming method in which a rectangular wave pulse voltage of a predetermined frequency is applied to a drive circuit for driving a cold cathode tube, and a duty ratio of the pulse voltage is controlled to adjust a light emission amount. In the above-mentioned liquid crystal display device for an in-vehicle device, a direct sunlight may be irradiated during the day, and a bright screen display is required. On the other hand, at night, a bright screen display causes glare and impairs visibility, so a dark screen display is required.
[0008]
However, in adjusting the brightness of the cold cathode tube by the PWM dimming, the ratio of the highest brightness to the lowest brightness of the light source is limited to 100: 5 when the highest brightness is 100. . That is, when trying to darken the screen display, in PWM dimming, the luminance of the cold cathode fluorescent lamp is reduced by reducing the duty ratio of the pulse signal. However, when the duty ratio of the pulse signal is reduced, a flicker of a small period occurs due to the oscillation capability of a transformer used in the driving circuit of the cold-cathode tube. The duty ratio is lowered to further darken the screen display, and when the duty ratio falls below the limit value, the flicker frequency falls below the so-called critical fusion frequency of the display screen, causing a visually perceived flicker called a flicker phenomenon. Significantly impairs visibility.
[0009]
In the worst case, there may be a serious trouble such that the light source is not turned on and the display screen is not displayed at all in a dark vehicle.

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
As described above, in the conventional dimming of the cold cathode tube by the PWM dimming, it is difficult to lower the brightness of the display screen at night to a predetermined value or less. In view of this, in nighttime display, a method has been adopted in which black light that is not originally required is blended with a display screen in which the light emission amount is suppressed to some extent to limit the irradiation light of the backlight, thereby reducing the brightness of the screen display. . According to the dimming method using the black display as described above, it was possible to realize a sufficiently dark screen display even when the luminance ratio of the light source was about 100: 5.
[0012]
However, in the liquid crystal display device using the above black display, although it is possible to reduce the brightness of the screen display, there is a problem that the gradation width of the screen display is narrowed and the expressiveness of the image is reduced. Was.
[0013]
The present invention has been made in order to solve the above-described problems, and it has been possible to expand the dimming range of the backlight and enable an optimal screen display according to the illuminance of external light without impairing the expressiveness of an image. The purpose of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal display device.
[0014]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
A liquid crystal display device according to claim 1, comprising: a liquid crystal panel; a backlight for irradiating the liquid crystal panel with transmitted light; and a light control unit for adjusting a light emission amount of the backlight. The light source has two or more types of light sources having different luminances, and the light sources have different luminance adjustable ranges, and when adjusting the light emission amount of the backlight by the dimming means according to the illuminance of external light, The two or more types of light sources are switched on and lighted.
[0015]
Therefore, the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention includes a backlight having two or more types of light sources. These light sources can adjust the brightness, respectively, and have different adjustable ranges. By switching and using the plurality of light sources, the adjustable range of the light emission amount of the backlight can be expanded.
[0016]
That is, in a situation where the illuminance of the external light is large, the light source is switched on and turned on with a relatively high luminance, and an optimal screen display is realized by adjusting the light emission amount within the adjustable range of the high luminance light source. . On the other hand, in an environment where the illuminance of external light is small, the light source is switched on and turned on with a relatively low luminance, and the optimal screen display is realized by adjusting the light emission amount within the adjustable range of the low luminance light source. .
[0017]
In particular, according to the present invention, only a light source having a low luminance can be turned on when a dark screen is displayed. Therefore, the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention can perform screen display without performing black display, which has conventionally been performed when performing dark screen display, and the problem that the expression of the screen display is reduced. Can be solved.
[0018]
In the present invention, since two or more types of backlight light sources are provided, it is possible to use a combination of a light source for displaying an intermediate screen in addition to a light source for displaying a bright screen and a light source for displaying a dark screen. It is.
[0019]
A liquid crystal display device according to a second aspect is the liquid crystal display device according to the first aspect, further comprising a cold cathode tube as a light source having a high luminance as a light source of the backlight, and a light emitting diode or electroluminescence as a light source having a low luminance. It is characterized by including any one of the elements.
[0020]
Therefore, the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention realizes a bright display screen by turning on a relatively high-intensity cold-cathode tube as a light source of the backlight in a situation where the illuminance of external light is large. On the other hand, in an environment where the illuminance of external light is small, a light emitting diode or an electroluminescent element having a relatively low luminance is turned on as a light source of a backlight, thereby realizing a dark display without a flicker phenomenon. Light-emitting diodes and electroluminescent elements are less likely to cause a flicker phenomenon when the brightness is reduced, so that a clear screen can be displayed even when a dark screen is displayed.
[0021]
Further, in response to the situation where the illuminance of the external light is intermediate, any one of the light emitting elements can be used in combination as an intermediate screen display light source.
[0022]
According to a third aspect of the present invention, in the liquid crystal display device according to the first or second aspect, when the light emission amount of the backlight is adjusted according to the illuminance of the external light, the illuminance of the external light is larger than a predetermined value. Is characterized in that only the light source with high luminance is turned on to adjust the light emission amount, and when the illuminance of the external light is smaller than a predetermined value, only the light source with low luminance is turned on to adjust the light emission amount.
[0023]
Therefore, the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention can suppress power consumption by selecting and lighting only the light source corresponding to the illuminance of the external light among the two or more types of backlight light sources.
[0024]
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention, in the liquid crystal display device according to any one of the first to third aspects, when adjusting the light emission amount of the backlight according to the illuminance of the external light, a predetermined light emission amount is used as a boundary. And a control circuit for switching between a light source having a high luminance and a light source having a low luminance.
[0025]
Therefore, in the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, a predetermined light emission amount is set in advance, and when adjusting the light emission amount of the backlight, when the light emission amount of the backlight exceeds a predetermined value, the control circuit operates the backlight. Switch the light source of the light. For example, when gradually decreasing the light emission amount of the backlight from a bright screen display, when the light emission amount of the backlight is lower than the predetermined light emission amount, the control circuit switches the light source of the backlight to a light source of high brightness. Turn off the light and turn on the light source with low luminance. The light emission amount can be adjusted even after the light source of the backlight is switched.
[0026]
According to a fifth aspect of the present invention, in the liquid crystal display device according to the fourth aspect, the control circuit includes a switch element and manually adjusts a light emission amount.
[0027]
Therefore, in the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, the user can set the display screen to a desired brightness by operating the switch element.
[0028]
According to a sixth aspect of the present invention, in the liquid crystal display device according to the fourth aspect, the control circuit includes an optical sensor and automatically adjusts a light emission amount.
[0029]
Therefore, in the liquid crystal display device according to the present invention, the dimming unit automatically adjusts the amount of light emitted from the backlight according to the illuminance of the external light detected by the optical sensor.
[0030]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings. FIG. 1 is a schematic top view of the liquid crystal display device 1 according to the present embodiment, and FIG. 2 is a schematic sectional view showing the internal structure of the liquid crystal display device 1.
[0031]
The liquid crystal display device 1 according to the present embodiment includes a liquid crystal panel 2 and a backlight unit 3. The light source 10 is provided.
[0032]
The lamp reflector 7 installed at one end of the lamp case 5 is formed of a mirror-finished aluminum plate, and is formed so that the irradiation light of the lit backlight light source can be efficiently output to the light guide plate 8. Have been.
[0033]
In this embodiment, a cold cathode tube 100 and a white light emitting diode 101 are used as the backlight light source 10. The cold-cathode tube 100 and the white light-emitting diode 101 are housed inside the lamp reflector 7 in an appropriate positional relationship so as not to block irradiation light from each other.
[0034]
In the present embodiment, one cold cathode tube 100 and three white light emitting diodes 101 are used, but the numbers are not particularly limited.
[0035]
The light guide plate 8 is made of a transparent resin such as an acrylic resin, and is a transparent plate-shaped member having a wedge-shaped cross section. The irradiation light of the light source condensed and output by the lamp reflector 7 is input from one end surface on the thick side of the light guide plate 8 and travels to the other end surface on the thin side while repeating total reflection inside the light guide plate 8. Meanwhile, the light guide plate 8 functions as a flat light source by radiating the irradiation light to the entire surface on the liquid crystal panel side.
[0036]
The reflection plate 6 is disposed so as to cover the entire back surface of the light guide plate 8. The reflecting plate 8 is for returning the irradiation light leaked to the back surface of the light guide plate to the light guide plate 8 again and extracting it from the liquid crystal panel side.
[0037]
The diffusion plate 9 diffuses the light emitted from the light guide plate 8 to the liquid crystal panel, and reduces the uneven brightness of the display panel by making the entire surface of the light guide plate 8 a uniform surface light source.
[0038]

Have been.
[0041]
The absolute luminance of the cold cathode tube 100 is about 28000 (cd / m 2 ), and the absolute luminance of the white light emitting diode 101 is about 230 (cd / m 2 ). Since the transmittance of the liquid crystal panel 2 is about 5%, when compared with the luminance on the liquid crystal panel surface, it is 560 (cd / m 2 ) when the cold cathode tube 100 is lit, and when the white light emitting diode 101 is lit. It is about 11.5 (cd / m 2 ). Light range adjustment of each light source, a cold cathode tube 100 is about 560~532 (cd / m 2), a white light emitting diode 101 is about 11.5~0 (cd / m 2). Therefore, in the present embodiment, by using the cold-cathode tube 100 as a light source for a bright screen display and using the white light emitting diode 101 as a light source for a dark screen display, the brightness of the bright screen display and the dark screen display can be improved. The ratio can be set to about 100: 1.
[0042]
In this embodiment, the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 generates the PWM signal 1 and the PWM signal 2 shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 according to a program of a microcomputer built in the backlight unit 3.
[0043]
FIG. 4 shows a waveform of a PWM signal output from the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 when only the cold cathode fluorescent lamp 100 is turned on. As can be seen from FIG. 4, when the cold cathode fluorescent lamp 100 is turned on, the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 generates a cold cathode fluorescent lamp PWM signal 1 having a frequency f of 150 Hz. At this time, no pulse signal for the white light emitting diode is generated.
[0044]
FIG. 5 shows a waveform of a PWM signal output from the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 when only the white light emitting diode 101 is turned on. As can be seen from FIG. 5, when the white light emitting diode 101 is turned on, the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 generates a PWM signal 2 for the white light emitting diode having a frequency f of 150 Hz. At this time, no pulse signal for the cold cathode tube is generated.
[0045]
The backlight unit 3 according to the present embodiment adjusts the light emission amount of each light source by changing the pulse width of each PWM signal generated by the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 and adjusting the duty ratio.
[0046]
The PWM signal output from the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 is input to the cold cathode tube driving circuit 42 or the white light emitting diode driving circuit 43.
[0047]
FIG. 6 is a schematic circuit diagram of the cold cathode tube driving circuit 42 according to the present embodiment.
[0048]
The cold-cathode tube driving circuit 42 according to the present embodiment includes a Royer oscillation circuit that generates a high-voltage AC voltage to the cold-cathode tube 100. The lower oscillator circuit includes a transistor Tr3, a transistor Tr4, a capacitor C1, and a transformer. The PWM signal 1 output from the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 is input from a PWM input terminal of the cold cathode tube driving circuit 42. The input PWM signal 1 is changed to a DC voltage on the primary side of the transistor Tr3 and the transistor Tr4 of the lower oscillation circuit and the transformer, and is also changed to a high AC voltage on the secondary side of the transformer. Further, the cold-cathode tube driving circuit 42 according to the present embodiment increases the voltage applied to the cold-cathode tube by applying an opposite-phase voltage to one terminal of the cold-cathode tube 100. This makes it possible to improve the brightness of the cold cathode tube.
[0049]
FIG. 7 is a schematic circuit diagram of the white light emitting diode drive circuit 43 according to the present embodiment.
[0050]
The white light emitting diode drive circuit 43 according to the present embodiment supplies a constant current to the white light emitting diode 101 by an emitter follower circuit.
[0051]
A method for manually adjusting the light emission amount of the backlight in the liquid crystal display device according to the present embodiment will be described.
[0052]
When the liquid crystal display device is used in a state where the illuminance of the external light is large, only the cold-cathode tube 100 is in a lighting state and the white light emitting diode 101 is in a non-lighting state. Assume that the visibility of the screen has been reduced.
[0053]
In a state where the illuminance of the external light is large, as shown in FIG. 4, the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 supplies a PWM1 signal, which is a pulse signal having H level intensity, to the cold cathode tube driving circuit 42 at a frequency of 150 Hz. When the PWM signal 1 input to the cold-cathode tube driving circuit 42 is at the H level, both the transistor Tr1 and the transistor Tr2 are turned on, and the above-mentioned lower oscillation circuit is turned on. The voltage oscillated by the Royer oscillation circuit and raised to a higher voltage is supplied to the cold-cathode tube 100 to turn on the cold-cathode tube 100.
[0054]
When the illuminance of the external light decreases and the display screen feels dazzling, the user manually adjusts the variable switch, which is the dimming means, so that the brightness of the display screen becomes appropriate according to the brightness of the external light. The control circuit 4 changes the duty ratio between the H level and the L level of the PWM signal 1 generated by the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 according to a signal from the variable switch. As a result, the pulse width of the PWM signal 1 shown in FIG. 4 gradually decreases, and as a result, the voltage supplied from the cold-cathode tube driving circuit 42 to the cold-cathode tube 100 decreases. Decreases.
[0055]
The user adjusts the variable switch so as to further reduce the brightness of the display screen. When the light emission amount of the cold cathode fluorescent lamp 100 falls below a predetermined value, the control circuit 4 turns the white light emitting diode 101 on. At the same time, the cold cathode tube 101 is switched to a non-lighting state. That is, when the PWM signal 1 becomes L level, the transistors Tr1 and Tr2 of the cold cathode tube driving circuit are turned off, the lower oscillation circuit stops oscillating, and the cold cathode tube 100 is turned off.
[0056]
When a signal for switching the light source is input to the control circuit 4 from the variable switch, the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 fixes the PWM signal 1 to the L level, and converts the PWM2 signal having the H level pulse intensity at a frequency of 150 Hz. It is provided to the white light emitting diode drive circuit 43. When the PWM signal 2 is input to the white light emitting diode driving circuit 43 shown in FIG. 7, the PWM signal 2 is integrated by the integration circuit, the transistor Tr5 is turned on in accordance with the inversion voltage, and the zener diode Td sets the constant voltage. The generated voltage is generated.
[0057]
When the PWM signal 2 supplied from the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 is at H level, the output of the integration circuit becomes L output and becomes H output according to the time constant of the integration circuit. When the output of the integration circuit is the L output, the transistors Tr5 and Tr6 are turned on, and the white light emitting diode 101 is turned on.
[0058]
When the PWM signal 2 supplied from the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 is at L level, the output of the integration circuit becomes H output, the transistors Tr5 and Tr6 are turned off, and the white light emitting diode 101 is turned off. .
[0059]
When the illuminance of the display screen is further reduced in the lighting state of the white light emitting diode 101, the user manually adjusts the variable switch. The control circuit 4 changes the duty ratio between the H level and the L level of the PWM signal 2 generated by the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 according to a signal from the variable switch. As a result, the pulse width of the PWM signal 2 shown in FIG. 5 gradually decreases, and as a result, the voltage supplied from the white light emitting diode driving circuit 43 to the white light emitting diode 101 decreases, so that the light emission amount of the white light emitting diode 101 is reduced. Decreases.
[0060]
In the present embodiment, the integrating circuit has an effect of reducing the light emission response of the white light emitting diode 101 and preventing a flicker phenomenon at the time of dimming.
[0061]
As described above, in a range below the adjustable range of the light emission amount of the cold cathode tube 100, the white light emitting diode 101 is turned on, and the light emission amount of the backlight light source 10 is adjusted by adjusting the light emission amount of the white light emitting diode 101. It can be adjusted freely, and the brightness of the display screen can be reproduced from a bright state to a dark state.
[0062]
In the present embodiment, in a dark screen display, the luminance of the screen display is 5.6 cd / m 2 by setting the duty ratio of the PWM signal 2 to 48.6%. Therefore, a dimming ratio of 100: 1 can be realized as compared with 560 cd / m 2 of the brightest screen display.
[0063]
As another embodiment, a liquid crystal display device in which the dimming unit includes an optical sensor and automatically adjusts the amount of light emitted from a backlight light source will be described.
[0064]
FIG. 8 is a configuration diagram of the control circuit 4 and the like according to the present embodiment. A switching circuit using a photoconductive element (phototransistor) PT is connected to the control circuit 4 as an optical sensor. In a situation where the illuminance of external light is bright, a signal (hereinafter, referred to as a “GND signal”) corresponding to the GND level of the phototransistor PT is output from the switching circuit. On the other hand, when the illuminance of the external light is dark, a signal (hereinafter, referred to as a “VCC signal”) corresponding to the VCC level of the phototransistor PT is output. When these signals are input to the control circuit 4, the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 of the control circuit 4 outputs a PWM signal corresponding to the signals. That is, as shown in FIG. 9, when a GND signal is input, the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 outputs a PWM signal 1 having a constant value at an H level and a PWM signal 2 having a constant value at an L level. On the other hand, as shown in FIG. 10, when the VCC signal is input, the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 outputs a PWM signal 1 having a constant value at an L level and a PWM signal 2 which is a pulse signal having a duty ratio of 48.6%. Is output.
[0065]
In a situation where the illuminance of the external light is bright, the PWM signal 1 output from the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 is at the H level, so that the cold-cathode tube is turned on and the PWM signal 2 is at a constant value at the L level. Therefore, the white light emitting diode 101 is turned off. The light emission amount of the cold cathode tube 100 is adjusted by changing the duty ratio of the PWM1 signal. Specifically, by changing the duty ratio in the range of 100% to several%, the light emission amount of the cathode ray tube 100 can be adjusted.
[0066]
In a situation where the illuminance of the external light is dark, the PWM signal 1 output from the dimming PWM generation circuit 41 is constant at the L level, so that the cold-cathode tube is turned off and the PWM signal 2 has a duty ratio of 48. Since the pulse signal is 0.6%, the white light emitting diode is turned on. The light emission amount of the white light emitting diode can be adjusted by adjusting the duty ratio of the PWM signal 2.
[0067]
【The invention's effect】
The liquid crystal display device according to the present invention can control the light emission amount by switching the light source of the backlight having a different light emission amount adjustable range according to the illuminance of the outside world, so that the visibility is always good and the expression is excellent. Screen display can be realized.
