TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a linear tape storage system represented by a DLT (Digital Linear Tape) or an LTO (Linear Tape Open), and more particularly to a composite linear storage system that can be used as a head feed mechanism of a magnetic tape head actuator assembly used in the system. Related to actuators.
[0002]
[Prior art]
This type of linear tape storage system has been developed as a backup for computer systems, and various types have been conventionally proposed. For example, a digital linear tape drive as a DLT is disclosed in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 9-198639.
[0003]
A digital linear tape drive (hereinafter, also simply referred to as “drive device”, “tape drive”, or “drive”) is a tape cartridge having a single reel (supply reel) (hereinafter, also simply referred to as “cartridge”). And a take-up reel is built therein. When the tape cartridge is mounted on the tape drive, the magnetic tape is pulled out of the tape cartridge and is taken up by a take-up reel via a head guide assembly (HGA). The head guide assembly is for guiding the magnetic tape (hereinafter, also simply referred to as “tape”) drawn from the tape cartridge to the magnetic head. The magnetic head exchanges information with the tape. The head guide assembly generally consists of a boomerang-shaped aluminum plate and six large guide rollers using bearings.
[0004]
The head guide assembly is also called a tape guide assembly, which is disclosed, for example, in Japanese Patent Publication No. Hei 9-500753. An example of a guide roller is disclosed in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2000-100025.
[0005]
In general, a tape drive includes a substantially rectangular parallelepiped housing having a common base as described in, for example, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2000-50147. The base has two spindle motors (reel motors). The first spindle motor has a spool (take-up reel) permanently attached to the base, the spool being sized to receive the magnetic tape flowing at a relatively high speed. A second spindle motor (reel motor) is adapted to receive a removable tape cartridge. The removable tape cartridge is manually or automatically inserted into the drive through a slot formed in the drive housing. When the tape cartridge is inserted into the slot, the cartridge engages with a second spindle motor (reel motor). Before rotating the first and second spindle motors (reel motors), the tape cartridge is connected to a permanently mounted spool (take-up reel) by a mechanical buckling mechanism. Many rollers (guide rollers) located between the tape cartridge and the permanent spool guide the magnetic tape as it moves back and forth between the tape cartridge and the permanently mounted spool at relatively high speeds. I do.
[0006]
Such a digital linear tape drive requires a device for the take-up reel to pull the tape from the supply reel. Such a pulling device is disclosed in, for example, Japanese Patent Publication No. 3-7595. According to this publication, take-up leader means (first tape leader) is connected to the take-up reel, and supply tape leader means (second tape leader) is fixed to the tape on the supply reel. The first tape leader has a tab at one end, the second tape leader has a locking hole, and the tab is engaged with the locking hole.
[0007]
Further, a mechanism for joining the first tape reader to the second tape reader is required. Such a joining mechanism is disclosed, for example, in Japanese Patent Publication No. 6-39027.
[0008]
Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2000-100116 discloses that the end of the leader tape can be attached to the tape end of the tape cartridge without the need for an ear piece protruding to the side of the leader tape (second tape leader). There is disclosed a "leader tape locking portion structure" which can be locked to a tape.
[0009]
JP-A-11-86381 discloses a lock system for preventing a take-up reel of a tape drive from rotating when a tape cartridge is not inserted into the drive.
[0010]
On the other hand, an example of a tape cartridge mounted on a digital linear tape drive is disclosed in JP-A-2000-149491.
[0011]
Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 11-316991 discloses a "tape drive" in which a tape reader can be pushed from a tape cartridge to a take-up reel without using a buckling mechanism or a take-up leader.
[0012]
Note that the tape drive further includes a magnetic tape head actuator assembly, which is positioned between the take-up spool and the tape cartridge on a tape path defined by a plurality of rollers. In operation, the magnetic tape flows back and forth between the take-up spool and the tape cartridge and comes into close proximity to the magnetic head actuator assembly while flowing over a defined tape path. One example of such a magnetic head actuator assembly is disclosed in the above-mentioned Japanese Patent Publication No. 2000-501547.
[0013]
The actuator assembly includes a tape head assembly (hereinafter, also simply referred to as “head assembly”) and a head feed mechanism. The head assembly includes a magnetic head (head) extending in a vertical direction, a head holder for holding the magnetic head, and a pair of flexible printed circuits (C) for electrically connecting the magnetic head to an external circuit. FPC).
[0014]
On the other hand, the head feed mechanism is for moving the head assembly up and down while holding the head assembly. The conventional head feed mechanism is provided with a threaded lead screw (threaded shaft) as disclosed in JP-T-2000-50147, and the head is mechanically turned by rotating the lead screw. This is for moving the assembly up and down (linear motion). In other words, a “mechanical linear actuator” is employed as a conventional head feed mechanism.
[0015]
In such a mechanical linear actuator, the position control of the head assembly is performed by open loop control. In the DLT, the storage capacity has been increased. In the first generation DLT “DLT1”, the normal storage capacity is 40 Gbytes, and the storage capacity when compressed is 80 Gbytes. In the second generation DLT “DLT2”, the normal storage capacity is 80 Gbytes, and the storage capacity when compressed is 160 Gbytes. In a DLT having such a storage capacity, a mechanical linear actuator can sufficiently cope with it.
[0016]
However, the “DLT3”, which is the next generation (third generation) DLT, has a large storage capacity (high recording density) with a normal storage capacity of 160 Gbytes and a compressed storage capacity of 320 Gbytes. Therefore, when the mechanical linear actuator described above is used as the linear actuator for DLT having this large storage capacity, it is difficult to control the head assembly to a desired position with high accuracy.
[0017]
On the other hand, in order to solve the problem of such a mechanical linear actuator, an "electromagnetic linear actuator" that electromagnetically moves the head assembly up and down (linear movement) is adopted as a head feed mechanism, and the position control of the head assembly is performed. Is performed by closed loop (feedback) control (see, for example, JP-A-2002-198219). Since the electromagnetic linear actuator employs feedback control as a control method, it is possible to always control the head assembly to a desired position accurately even if the magnetic tape fluctuates up and down during traveling.
[0018]
Such an electromagnetic linear actuator generally includes a fixed portion, a movable portion that holds the head assembly (elevated object) so as to be able to move up and down in the vertical direction with respect to the fixed portion, and a movable portion of the movable portion. It has a guide that restrains (restricts) movement in directions other than the (elevation) direction, and a base for attaching the guide.
[0019]
Here, the electromagnetic linear actuator can be divided into two types. The first type is a “movable magnet type” electromagnetic linear actuator, which has a magnet in a movable part and a coil in a fixed part. The second type is a “moving coil type” electromagnetic linear actuator, which has a magnet and a yoke in a fixed portion and a coil in a movable portion.
[0020]
As described above, the electromagnetic linear actuator is suitable as a DLT actuator having a large storage capacity. However, as described above, the control method (control system) is completely different between the mechanical linear actuator and the electromagnetic linear actuator. Therefore, when this electromagnetic linear actuator is used as a DLT linear actuator of a lower model (that is, a first generation or a second generation), the control system for the mechanical linear actuator that has been incorporated so far is used at all. Therefore, it is necessary to newly install a control system suitable for the electromagnetic linear actuator. That is, it is necessary to make a design change to the DLT of the lower model.
[0021]
In order to solve such a problem, not only mechanical linear actuators but also electromagnetic linear actuators as third-generation (higher-order) DLT linear actuators that are compatible with lower-order DLTs have been developed. A "composite linear actuator" that can operate is being considered. That is, the composite linear actuator is a combination of a mechanical linear actuator and an electromagnetic linear actuator. In such a composite linear actuator, coarse position control (open loop control) of the head assembly is performed using a mechanical linear actuator, and precise position control (closed loop control) of the head assembly is performed using an electromagnetic linear actuator. It can be carried out.
[0022]
More specifically, a composite linear actuator is a mechanical linear actuator including a lead screw having a rotation center axis extending in the axial direction, and a main movable portion that linearly moves in the axial direction by rotation of the lead screw. Including. The main movable portion operates as an electromagnetic linear actuator including a sub-fixed portion and a sub-movable portion that linearly moves in the axial direction with respect to the sub-fixed portion by electromagnetic force. The sub-fixing section is called a VCM (voice call motor) fixing section, and the sub-movable section is called a VCM moving section. The sub-fixing portion has a yoke and a magnet, and the sub-movable portion includes an air core coil. This air-core coil is fixed to a head holder (attachment) that holds the magnetic head.
[0023]
As a sub-fixing portion of the electromagnetic linear actuator, one having a pair of magnetic circuits (yoke portions) on both left and right sides of the head lift can be considered. When a pair of magnetic circuits (yoke portions) are separately configured, in order to fix them to the head lift, a space for the fixation is required on the left and right sides of the head lift, up and down or on the depth side.

【The invention's effect】
As is clear from the above description, in the present invention, since the left and right yoke portions are integrated by the bridge portion, the number of parts can be reduced. By integrating this magnetic circuit, the magnetic circuit can be fixed to the head lift at a place irrespective of the thrust. Further, since it is not necessary to arrange two yoke portions, it is possible to easily assemble. In addition, since the left and right yoke portions are integrated at the bridging portion, the area of the yoke with respect to the magnet is increased, and the saturation characteristics of the magnetic circuit are improved, so that the leakage magnet is improved.
