Description

【0001】

【0009】
Figure 2004055307
【0010】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an electronic device equipped with a fuel cell as a power source, that is, a device equipped with a fuel cell.
[0002]
[Prior art]
For portable electronic devices such as mobile phones, PDAs, and notebook computers, conventional nickel-cadmium batteries and nickel-metal hydride batteries are used as drive power supplies and memory retention power supplies in order to reduce the size and weight of the entire device and extend the drivable time. In many cases, a lithium ion secondary battery is used instead of the above. Lithium-ion secondary batteries are characterized by being lighter in weight and capable of obtaining a relatively high drive voltage and battery capacity as compared with nickel-cadmium batteries and nickel-metal hydride batteries. On the other hand, with the spread of the advanced information communication network in recent years, the information communication function of the portable electronic device has been strengthened, and the operation time of the device tends to increase. For this reason, there is an increasing demand for batteries for portable electronic devices to have higher capacities. The performance of lithium-ion secondary batteries has been improved with the progress of portable electronic devices. However, from the viewpoint of materials and structure, the performance has almost reached the limit, and in recent years, the performance has been further increased. It is becoming impossible to meet the demand for higher capacity.
[0003]
Under such circumstances, as a new battery replacing the lithium ion secondary battery, a fuel cell expected to have a capacity several times higher than that of the lithium ion secondary battery is attracting attention. 2. Description of the Related Art A fuel cell has a structure including a fuel electrode (negative electrode) and an air electrode (positive electrode) containing a catalyst, and an electrolyte that allows predetermined ions to move between them. In a fuel cell, when fuel or hydrogen is supplied to the fuel electrode and air or oxygen is supplied to the air electrode, an electrochemical reaction occurs at each electrode by the action of a catalyst included in the electrode, and the fuel is supplied to the supply source. DC current by the generated electrons can be extracted. In a fuel cell that generates power by such a mechanism, continuous power generation is possible by continuously supplying fuel and oxygen. Therefore, the fuel cell can be applied to a power source for portable electronic devices by replenishing fuel and oxygen, like a secondary battery repeatedly used by a charging operation.
[0004]
Fuel cells are classified into phosphoric acid type, polymer electrolyte type, molten carbonate type, solid oxide type, and the like, based on the type of the electrolyte. As a power source for portable electronic devices, it is possible to operate at a low temperature around room temperature, to be compact, to have a solid electrolyte that is resistant to vibration and easy to mass-produce. Fuel cells are suitable.
[0005]
In a polymer electrolyte fuel cell, as a fuel supply method, a method in which hydrogen gas reformed from an organic fuel is brought into contact with a fuel electrode, and a liquid fuel capable of supplying hydrogen is directly supplied to the fuel electrode Methods are known. The method using hydrogen gas is not suitable as a small power source for portable electronic devices because a device for reforming the fuel is required and the handling of hydrogen gas is difficult. Therefore, a fuel cell using a liquid fuel has attracted attention from the viewpoint of configuring a small power source for portable electronic devices. In particular, a direct methanol fuel cell that supplies an aqueous methanol solution as a liquid fuel directly to a fuel electrode has attracted attention.
[0006]
According to the direct methanol method, at the fuel electrode supplied with the aqueous methanol solution, as shown in the following equation (1), methanol and water react to form carbon dioxide (CO 2). 2 ), Proton (H + ) And electrons (e ) Occurs. Protons generated at the fuel electrode pass through the polymer electrolyte membrane to the air electrode, and electrons flow to an external circuit connected to the fuel electrode. The electrons that have completed their work in the external circuit go to the cathode. Also, carbon dioxide is discharged out of the system.

[0010]
A conventional polymer electrolyte fuel cell employing a direct methanol system often includes a device or system for forcibly flowing a liquid fuel or oxygen and supplying it to each electrode. However, a fuel cell with a forced supply system is impractical due to its excessively large size, especially as a power source for mobile phones and PDAs. In some cases, a device or system for removing water generated at the air electrode by heating or blowing air is provided, but a fuel cell with a water removal system is also used as a power source, especially for mobile phones and PDAs. Is not practical because of its excessive size.
[0011]
On the other hand, a fuel cell that has been reduced in size and weight without using a forced supply system and a water removal system has been proposed. In such a fuel cell, for example, a path is provided from the fuel storage unit that stores the liquid fuel to the fuel electrode, and the liquid fuel flows through the path and contacts the fuel electrode. At the same time, the air electrode is provided so that air outside the battery can come into contact with the air, so that oxygen contained in the air comes into contact with the air electrode and water generated at the air electrode naturally evaporates into the air. Have been.
[0012]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, the presence or absence of the forced supply system and the water removal system affects the output of the battery, and if the direct methanol type solid polymer fuel cell does not have these systems, the battery output is reduced in the conventional technology. It drops to a considerable extent. Due to the lack of the forced supply system, the supply efficiency of the liquid fuel and oxygen is low, and further, the lack of the water removal system, the water generated at the cathode causes the surface of the cathode to be damaged. It is considered that the reduction of the effective area of the air electrode due to the coating is a cause of the battery output reduction. From the viewpoint of air flow contact efficiency and water evaporation efficiency, the degree of exposure of the cathode to air outside the battery is better, but from the viewpoint of protection of the cathode, the degree of exposure of the cathode is smaller. Is good. The higher the degree of exposure, the more easily the air electrode deteriorates due to contamination or damage, and the deterioration of the air electrode causes a decrease in battery output. As described above, in the direct methanol type polymer electrolyte fuel cell that does not include the forced supply system or the water removal system, it is difficult to suppress a decrease in cell output. Therefore, according to the prior art, the direct methanol solid polymer fuel cell is often impractical for small devices such as portable electronic devices.
[0013]
The present invention was conceived under such circumstances, and an apparatus or system for forcibly supplying fuel or oxygen to both electrodes, and water generated at an air electrode It is an object of the present invention to provide a fuel cell-equipped device capable of appropriately suppressing a decrease in the output of a battery without a device or system for removing the fuel cell.
[0014]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
According to the present invention, a fuel cell device is provided. The fuel cell device includes a fuel cell main body including a first electrode for oxidizing fuel, a second electrode for reducing oxygen, and an electrolyte layer sandwiched between the first electrode and the second electrode. A housing having an opening for exposing at least a part of the two electrodes to the outside and housing the fuel cell main body, wherein the opening can be selected from a shielded state and an open state by displacement of the housing. It is characterized by having.
[0015]
According to such a configuration, the output of the fuel cell can be reduced without a device or system for forcibly supplying fuel or oxygen and a device or system for removing water generated at the cathode. Can be suppressed. In the present invention, at least a part of the second electrode (air electrode) of the fuel cell is exposed to the outside of the device through an opening of the housing, and the opening is in a shielded state and an open state due to displacement of the housing. Is selectable. When the fuel cell device according to the present invention is a mobile phone, for example, when the mobile phone is driven by a large amount of power during a call or the like, the opening of the opening is caused by the displacement or change in the shape of the housing, thereby operating the battery. As a result, water generated at the air electrode can be efficiently removed. This is because the transpiration of water adhering to the air electrode is promoted by being opened to the air outside the device. By efficiently removing water generated at the air electrode, it is possible to suppress a decrease in the reaction rate in the reduction reaction of oxygen at the air electrode. It is possible to suppress a decrease in the reaction rate in the fuel oxidation reaction at the electrode. As a result, a decrease in battery output can be suppressed.
[0016]
In addition, according to the present invention, when the mobile phone is driven with low power during standby or the like, and no significant amount of water is generated at the air electrode, the opening can be blocked by displacement of the housing. it can. By blocking the opening or the air electrode, breakage and contamination of the air electrode are prevented, and a decrease in the output of the fuel cell is suppressed.
[0017]
As described above, according to the fuel cell device according to the present invention, the state of exposure of the cathode to the air outside the device can be appropriately changed according to the power consumption of the device. Even without a system, it is possible to appropriately suppress a decrease in battery output. 2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, as disclosed in, for example, JP-A-7-199311 and JP-A-2001-292214, there is known an electronic device capable of displacing a housing while mounting a battery. However, they generally do not carry a fuel cell, and thus do not change the form of the housing to change the exposure of the cathode of the fuel cell.
[0018]
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the housing includes a first housing having an opening and housing the fuel cell, and a second housing connected to the first housing via a hinge. The first housing and the second housing are rotatable about a hinge portion as a pivot, and the second housing can be arranged at a position that shields the opening. Such a configuration is suitable for appropriately selecting the shielding state and the open state of the opening. In this case, it is preferable that the hinge section has a fuel storage section that holds the fuel supplied to the first electrode of the fuel cell body in the first housing. Alternatively, the first housing may have a fuel storage unit for holding fuel supplied to the first electrode of the fuel cell main body at a position closer to the hinge part than the fuel cell main body. When the fuel storage unit is provided with such a configuration, when a liquid fuel such as a methanol aqueous solution is used as the fuel, the fuel may be appropriately supplied to the fuel electrode using the own weight of the fuel in some cases. .
[0019]
In another preferred embodiment of the present invention, the housing has a first housing that has an opening and accommodates the fuel cell, and a first housing that is located between a position that shields the opening and a position that opens the opening. A second housing slidable with respect to the body. Such a configuration is also suitable for appropriately selecting the open state and the closed state of the opening.
[0020]
In the present invention, preferably, the electrolyte layer is made of a solid polymer electrolyte membrane. The fuel is preferably an aqueous methanol solution.
[0021]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
FIGS. 1 to 5 show a mobile phone X1 as a fuel cell device according to a first embodiment of the present invention. 1 and 2 are perspective views of the mobile phone X1. FIG. 3 is a sectional view taken along line III-III of FIG. 2, and FIG. 4 is an exploded sectional view taken along line III-III of FIG. FIG. 5 is a sectional view taken along line VV in FIG. In the present embodiment, the mobile phone X1 is described as a mobile electronic device equipped with a direct methanol fuel cell.
[0022]
The mobile phone X1 includes a first housing 11, a second housing 12, and a fuel cell body 20 housed in the first housing 11. The first housing 11 and the second housing 12 are connected via a hinge 13 and can be displaced between a folded state shown in FIG. 1 and an expanded state shown in FIG. The first housing 11 has an opening 11a. The second housing 12 is provided with a display 31, various buttons 32, a speaker 33, a microphone 34, and an antenna 35. As shown in FIG. 5, the hinge section 13 is provided with a fuel storage section 14 for holding an aqueous methanol solution as a liquid fuel. The fuel storage unit 14 in the present embodiment is configured as a small tank in which an aqueous methanol solution is directly stored, and has an inlet (not shown) for appropriately replenishing the aqueous methanol solution or methanol. The first housing 11, the second housing 12, and the hinge portion 13 may be made of metal or resin.
[0023]
As shown in FIGS. 3 to 5, the fuel cell body 20 includes a fuel electrode 21 and an air electrode 22 and an electrolyte layer 23 sandwiched therebetween. The fuel electrode 21 has a laminated structure including a catalyst layer 21a and a current collector 21b. Similarly, the air electrode 22 has a laminated structure including a catalyst layer 22a and a current collector 22b.
[0024]
The catalyst layer 21a of the fuel electrode 21 is for oxidizing methanol to extract protons and electrons according to the above-described formula (1). And a mixture with a later-described proton-conducting polymer material, and is porous. Examples of the conductive particles include carbon particles such as Ketjen black, furnace black, and carbon black. As the catalyst, a platinum (Pt) -ruthenium (Ru) alloy can be used. The particle size of the catalyst is, for example, 2 to 5 nm. In the production of the catalyst layer 21a, first, the catalytic particles and the proton conductive polymer material are mixed in an aqueous solvent system or an alcohol solvent system, and the mixture is defoamed to prepare an electrode paste. Next, after applying or filling the electrode paste on the porous conductive film as the catalyst layer base material, it is dried by heating at, for example, 100 ° C. Examples of the porous conductive film include carbon paper. The thickness of the porous conductive film is, for example, 100 to 400 μm, and the thickness of the material derived from only the electrode paste on the porous conductive film as the catalyst layer substrate is, for example, 5 to 50 μm. Thus, a porous catalyst layer 21a with a porous conductive film (not shown) is produced.
[0025]
The current collector 21b is for efficiently extracting electrons generated by a methanol oxidation reaction in the catalyst layer 21a, and is, for example, a metal mesh made of SUS or Ni. As the current collector 21b, a collector having a mesh opening diameter or a mesh opening ratio through which a methanol aqueous solution as a liquid fuel can easily pass is employed. The current collector 21b is electrically connected to a predetermined electronic circuit (not shown) for achieving various functions of the mobile phone X1.
[0026]
The catalyst layer 22a of the air electrode 22 is for promoting the reduction reaction of oxygen in the air in accordance with the above formula (2), and includes a catalyst particle formed by supporting a catalyst on conductive particles and an electrolyte layer formation. And a mixture with a later-described proton-conducting polymer material, and is porous. For the catalyst, platinum (Pt) can be employed. The particle size of the catalyst is, for example, 2 to 5 nm. As the conductive particles, those similar to the catalyst layer 21a can be used. The method for forming the catalyst layer 22a is the same as described above for the catalyst layer 21a.
[0027]
The current collector 22b is for efficiently supplying electrons to the catalyst layer 22a, and is, for example, a metal mesh made of SUS or Ni. As the current collector 22b, air or oxygen can sufficiently come into contact with the catalyst layer 22a by natural diffusion, and a mesh opening or a mesh capable of appropriately evaporating and discharging water generated by an oxygen reduction reaction in the catalyst layer 22a. One having a mesh aperture ratio is employed. The current collector 22b is electrically connected to a predetermined electronic circuit (not shown) for achieving various functions of the mobile phone X1.
[0028]
The electrolyte layer 23 is a medium for transporting protons generated by a methanol oxidation reaction in the fuel electrode 21 to the air electrode 22 and is made of a polymer material having no electron conductivity and having proton conductivity. Such a polymer material includes a perfluorosulfonic acid membrane. Examples of the perfluorosulfonic acid membrane include a Nafion membrane (manufactured by DuPont), a Flemion membrane (manufactured by Asahi Glass), an Aciplex membrane (manufactured by Asahi Kasei Kogyo), and a dow membrane (manufactured by Dow Chemical). The thickness of the electrolyte layer 23 is, for example, 50 to 250 μm.
[0029]
In manufacturing the fuel cell body 20, first, the electrolyte layer 23 is sandwiched between the catalyst layers 21a and 22a manufactured as described above. At this time, the catalyst layer 21a and the catalyst layer 22a are bonded to the electrolyte layer 23 via a surface made of only a material derived from the electrode paste on a porous conductive film (not shown). Next, under heating, the bonded body is pressed in the laminating direction and joined. Next, the current collector 21b is stacked and joined to the catalyst layer 21a, and the current collector 22b is stacked and joined to the catalyst layer 22a.
[0030]
The fuel cell main body 20 manufactured in this manner is housed in the first housing 11, which is an exterior sealing material, with the packing material 36 interposed between the peripheral portion and the first housing 11. . By providing the packing material 36 on the periphery of the fuel cell body 20, leakage of liquid fuel from the fuel introduction path 15 described below is prevented.
[0031]
In a state where the fuel cell main body 20 is housed in the first housing 11, a fuel introduction path 15 in which at least a part of the fuel electrode 21 faces between the fuel electrode 21 and the first housing 11 of the fuel cell main body 20. Is formed. In order to form the fuel introduction passage 15 in a state where the fuel cell main body 20 is housed in the first housing 11, an inner surface of the first housing 11 facing the fuel electrode 21 is provided with a fuel introduction passage defining member. Are formed. As shown in FIG. 5, the fuel introduction path 15 communicates with a fuel storage section 14 provided in the hinge section 13 and is formed so that liquid fuel flows from the fuel storage section 14 by capillary action. . A carbon dioxide permeable membrane (not shown) is provided at a predetermined position facing the fuel introduction passage 15 in the first housing 11 as a partition between the fuel introduction passage 15 and the outside of the first housing. The carbon dioxide permeable membrane is a membrane that selectively permeates carbon dioxide without substantially transmitting liquid fuel, and carbon dioxide generated at the fuel electrode 21 is discharged through this membrane. As a material constituting the carbon dioxide permeable membrane, for example, silicon rubber, fluoropolyimide and the like can be mentioned. Further, a part of the air electrode 22 is exposed to the outside of the device through the opening 11a while being in contact with the first housing 11.
[0032]
In the mobile phone X1 having the above-described power generation system configuration, when a liquid fuel, that is, an aqueous methanol solution is stored in the fuel storage unit 14, the aqueous methanol solution travels from the fuel storage unit 14 to the fuel introduction path 15 by capillary action. To the fuel electrode 21. Then, in the fuel electrode 21, the methanol aqueous solution passes through the mesh-shaped current collector 21b and reaches the catalyst layer 21a. At the same time, oxygen contained in the air is constantly in contact with the air electrode 22 that comes into contact with the outside air through the opening 11a of the first housing 11. In the air electrode 22, oxygen passes through the mesh-like current collector 22b to reach the catalyst layer 22a.
[0033]
As described above, when the aqueous methanol solution is supplied to the fuel electrode 21 and the oxygen is supplied to the air electrode 22, the catalyst layer 21 a of the fuel electrode 21 uses the above formula (1) by the action of the catalyst. ) Occurs to generate carbon dioxide, protons, and electrons. In the catalyst layer 22a of the air electrode 22, an oxygen reduction reaction represented by the above formula (2) occurs due to the action of the catalyst, and water is generated. The progress of such an electrochemical reaction at both electrodes causes the fuel cell body 20 to generate power. Specifically, after the electrons generated in the catalyst layer 21a of the fuel electrode 21 are collected by the current collector 21b via the conductive particles carrying the catalyst, the electrons are collected by the predetermined current connected to the current collector 21b. The power flows to an electronic circuit (not shown) and power is consumed. The electrons that have completed their work in the electronic circuit go to the current collector 22b of the air electrode 22 connected to the electronic circuit. Further, protons generated at the fuel electrode 21 flow into the electrolyte layer 23 via the proton conductive polymer material contained in the catalyst layer 21a, and travel toward the air electrode 22. The carbon dioxide generated at the fuel electrode 21 is discharged from the fuel introduction path 15 via the above-described carbon dioxide permeable membrane (not shown) provided in the first housing 11. In this way, the fuel cell body 20 using the methanol aqueous solution as a fuel generates at least a part of the driving power of the mobile phone X1.
[0034]
In the mobile phone X1 provided with such a power generation system including the fuel cell main body 20, when the mobile phone X1 is driven with low power, for example, during standby, the first housing 11 and the second housing 12 are arranged as shown in FIG. It is folded as shown. When the mobile phone X1 is driven with low power, a significant amount of water is not generated in the air electrode 22, and an excessive decrease in power due to the water covering the air electrode 22 does not occur. When the first housing 11 and the second housing 12 are oriented in a folded state, the opening 11a of the first housing 11 is shielded. As a result, breakage or contamination of the air electrode 22 facing the outside of the device via the opening 11a is prevented, and thus deterioration of the air electrode 22 is suppressed. As described above, according to the mobile phone X1, the opening 11a can be kept in the shielded state during low-power driving, so that a decrease in the output of the fuel cell main body 20 due to the deterioration of the air electrode 22 can be appropriately suppressed. It is possible.
[0035]
On the other hand, when the mobile phone X1 is driven by a large amount of electric power, for example, during a call, the first housing 11 and the second housing 12 are set in an expanded state as shown in FIG. In the deployed state, the opening 11a or the air electrode 22 is opened to the atmosphere, and the evaporation of water attached to the air electrode 22 is promoted. Therefore, when the first casing 11 and the second casing 12 are oriented in the deployed state, a significant amount of water generated at the air electrode 22 due to the operation of the fuel cell can be efficiently removed. By efficiently removing water generated at the air electrode 22, it is possible to suppress a decrease in the reaction rate in the battery reaction. Specifically, by efficiently removing water from the cathode 22, it is possible to suppress a reduction in the reaction rate in the reduction reaction of oxygen at the cathode 22, and to proceed in conjunction with the reduction reaction. It is possible to suppress a decrease in the reaction rate in the oxidation reaction, that is, the methanol oxidation reaction in the fuel electrode 21. As described above, according to the mobile phone X1, the opening 11a can be set to the open state at the time of high-power driving, so that a decrease in the output of the fuel cell body 20 due to a decrease in the reaction speed of the battery reaction is appropriately suppressed. It is possible.
[0036]
In addition, in the normal use mode of the mobile phone X1, the fuel introduction path 15 is located below the fuel storage section 14 as shown in FIG. You. Specifically, the flow of the aqueous methanol solution from the fuel storage unit 14 to the fuel introduction path 15 and the progress of the aqueous methanol solution inside the fuel introduction path 15 are promoted by the action of the own weight of the aqueous methanol solution. By promoting such fuel supply, appropriate contact efficiency of the liquid fuel with the fuel electrode 21 can be achieved, and a decrease in the output of the fuel cell main body 20 is suppressed.
[0037]
6 to 8 show a mobile phone X2 as a fuel cell device according to a second embodiment of the present invention. 6 and 7 are perspective views of the mobile phone X2, and FIG. 8 is a cross-sectional view along the line VIII-VIII of FIG.
[0038]
The mobile phone X2 is a mobile electronic device on which a direct methanol fuel cell is mounted, and includes a first housing 11, a second housing 12, and a fuel cell body 20 housed in the first housing 11. Prepare. The first housing 11 and the second housing 12 are connected via a hinge 13 and can be displaced between a folded state shown in FIG. 6 and an expanded state shown in FIG. The first housing 11 is provided with an opening 11a for exposing the air electrode 22 of the fuel cell main body 20 to the outside of the device. A fuel storage unit 14 is provided inside the first housing 11 as shown in FIG. The fuel storage unit 14 is provided in the first housing 11 at a position closer to the hinge unit 13 than the opening 11a. The fuel storage unit 14 in the present embodiment is configured as a small tank in which an aqueous methanol solution as a liquid fuel is directly stored, and has an inlet (not shown) for appropriately replenishing the aqueous methanol solution or methanol. The second housing 12 is provided with a display 31, various buttons 32, a speaker 33, a microphone 34, and an antenna 35. The first housing 11, the second housing 12, and the hinge portion 13 may be made of metal or resin.
[0039]
The configuration and manufacturing method of the fuel cell main body 20 in the present embodiment, the power generation principle of the fuel cell main body 20 in the direct methanol system, and the power generation system configuration other than the fuel cell main body 20 are the same as those described in the first embodiment. The same is true.
[0040]
According to the mobile phone X2 having such a configuration, similarly to the mobile phone X1, it is possible to suppress a decrease in the output of the fuel cell main body 20. According to the mobile phone X2, at the time of low-power driving, as shown in FIG. 6, the first housing 11 and the second housing 12 can be folded to set the opening 11a in a shielded state. Thereby, the deterioration of the air electrode 22 with time is suppressed, and therefore, it is possible to appropriately suppress the decrease in the output of the fuel cell body 20 due to the time deterioration of the air electrode 22. On the other hand, at the time of high-power driving, as shown in FIG. 7, the first housing 11 and the second housing 12 can be deployed to open the opening 11a. As a result, water generated by the cell reaction evaporates efficiently from the air electrode 22, and therefore, it is possible to appropriately suppress a decrease in the output of the fuel cell body 20 due to a decrease in the reaction rate of the cell reaction. Further, in the normal use mode of the mobile phone X2, when the housing is deployed, the fuel introduction path 15 is located below the fuel storage section 14 as shown in FIG. . As a result, high contact efficiency of the liquid fuel with the fuel electrode 21 is achieved, and therefore, a decrease in the output of the fuel cell main body 20 can be suppressed. In addition, in the mobile phone X2 of the present embodiment, since the fuel storage unit 14 is housed in the first housing 11, the hinge unit 13 can be configured to be smaller than that of the mobile phone X1.
[0041]
9 to 11 show a mobile phone X3 which is a fuel cell device according to a third embodiment of the present invention. 9 and 10 are perspective views of the mobile phone X3, and FIG. 11 is a cross-sectional view along the line XI-XI in FIG.
[0042]
The mobile phone X3 is a mobile electronic device on which a direct methanol fuel cell is mounted, and includes a first housing 11 ′, a second housing 12 ′, and a fuel cell body housed in the first housing 11 ′. 20. The first housing 11 'and the second housing 12' are slidably connected to each other. Specifically, the first housing 11 'and the second housing 12' can be displaced between a contracted state shown in FIG. 9 and an extended state shown in FIG. The first housing 11 'is provided with an opening 11'a for exposing the air electrode 22 of the fuel cell body 20 to the outside of the device. The opening 11'a is formed in the first housing 11 'at a location that is opened in the housing extension state shown in FIG. As shown in FIG. 11, a fuel storage unit 14 is provided inside the first housing 11 '. The fuel storage unit 14 in the present embodiment is configured as a small tank in which an aqueous methanol solution as a liquid fuel is directly stored, and has an inlet (not shown) for appropriately replenishing the aqueous methanol solution or methanol. The second housing 12 'is provided with a display 31, various buttons 32, a speaker 33, a microphone 34, and an antenna 35. The first housing 11 'and the second housing 12' may be made of metal or resin.
[0043]
The configuration and manufacturing method of the fuel cell main body 20 in the present embodiment, the power generation principle of the fuel cell main body 20 in the direct methanol system, and the power generation system configuration other than the fuel cell main body 20 are the same as those described in the first embodiment. The same is true.
[0044]
According to the mobile phone X3 having such a configuration, it is possible to suppress a decrease in the output of the fuel cell main body 20, similarly to the mobile phone X1. According to the mobile phone X3, at the time of low-power driving, as shown in FIG. 9, the first housing 11 'and the second housing 12' can be shortened so that the opening 11'a is in a shielded state. 10, the first housing 11 'and the second housing 12' can be extended to open the opening 11'a. As a result, water generated by the cell reaction evaporates efficiently from the air electrode 22, and therefore, it is possible to appropriately suppress a decrease in the output of the fuel cell body 20 due to a decrease in the reaction rate of the cell reaction. Further, in the normal use mode of the mobile phone X3, the fuel supply path 15 is located below the fuel storage unit 14, so that the fuel supply to the fuel electrode 21 is promoted. As a result, high contact efficiency of the liquid fuel with the fuel electrode 21 is achieved, and therefore, a decrease in the output of the fuel cell main body 20 can be suppressed. In addition, in the mobile phone X3 of the present embodiment, it is not necessary to provide a hinge for connecting the first housing 11 'and the second housing 12'.
[0045]
In the first to third embodiments described above, a mobile phone equipped with a direct methanol fuel cell using an aqueous solution of methanol as a liquid fuel has been described. However, the present invention relates to a fuel cell using another liquid fuel. It can also be configured as an electronic device equipped with a battery. In that case, the fuel cell main body 20 has a configuration corresponding to the liquid fuel to be used, if necessary, instead of the above configuration. Other liquid fuels include ethylene glycol and, for example, KBH 4 Borohydride-based fuels and the like can be used. Further, the fuel storage unit 14 may be configured to house a fuel cartridge into which the liquid fuel has been injected, instead of the above-described configuration in which the liquid fuel is directly stored. In this case, when the cartridge is mounted, the inside of the cartridge and the fuel introduction path 15 communicate with each other.
