ビデオカセットレコーダ(VCR)は、テレビ番組内容をビデオテープに録画する
能力を有する。通常のVCRには、視聴者が、録画開始及び終了時刻を手動で設定
しなければならないという制限がある。こうした時間枠は、静的で、視聴者が予
約を編集または削除しない限り、変更されない。

一貫した状態に維持されることと、他のデータベースを参照することなく、また
中央サイトに接続する必要もなく、この一貫性が自動的に維持される状態とを、
保証することである。伝送または収集動作は、時宜に適った形で、または任意の
確実な周期性をもって発生することについての、保証はない。例えば、クライア
ントシステムは、何ヶ月もの間、遮断される可能性があり、システムへの伝送が
最終的に可能となった時には、中央及びクライアントデータベースを完全に同期
させるのに必要なすべてのオブジェクトの伝送が不可能であったとしても、オブ
ジェクトの複製の結果として、常にサーバデータベースの一貫した下位集合が生
じる必要がある。
【００２８】 更に重大なことに、データベースが使用されている間、または更新されている
間に、安定した動作環境が保証されない可能性がある。例えば、デバイスへの電
力供給が、停止する恐れがある。本発明では、すべてのデータベース更新を「ト
ランザクション」として扱い、これは、トランザクション全体が完了すること、
またはトランザクションが全く完了しないことを意味する。選択される特定の手

【００３１】 この問題を解決するために、二種類のアプローチを組み合わせる。第一に、ほ
とんどのオブジェクトは、「期限」と呼ばれる基本属性を有する。これは、オブ
ジェクトが有効でなくなり、廃棄されるべきものとなる日付及び経過時間である

れる。視聴オブジェクトが受領される時、受領されたオブジェクトのソースバー
ジョンは、カレントオブジェクトのソースバージョンと比較される。新しいオブ
ジェクトは、高いソースバージョン属性を有する場合には、既存のオブジェクト
上にコピーされ、これ以外の場合には、廃棄される。

ジョンとを単純に列挙する「従属」属性と呼ばれる新しい視聴オブジェクトの基

ムをデバッグする目的でのみ使用される。各クライアントシステム上で複製され
る中央データベースのポートフォリオは異なり、データベースのあらゆる複製の

【００５５】 本発明の好適な実施形態においては、米国特許第4,405,829号において説明さ
れるものと類似する手法を使用して安全な暗号化チャネルが確立されている。こ
れは、非対称鍵暗号化として記述される場合が多く、公開／秘密鍵ペア暗号化と
記述される場合もある。当業者には認識されるように、非対称鍵暗号化に基づく
プロトコルは、クライアントデバイスの認証及び情報の安全な配信にとって、信
頼性の高い効率的な基盤となる。一般に、認証は、クライアントと中央システム
との間での署名入りメッセージの交換を使用して提供される。安全な配信は、認
証段階中に送信される短寿命の非対称鍵を使用して、すべての通信を暗号化する
ことにより提供される。
【００５６】 セキュリティを成功させるには、暗号化に使用される非対称鍵ペアについて、
事前に送信者と受信者との間で合意する必要がある。こうした鍵の分散は、電子
データ保護のためのあらゆる暗号化システムにおいて、最も脆弱な部分となる。
本出願人が保有する1999年7月19日出願の出願番号第09/357,183号「自己テスト
電子組立体及びテストシステム」では、製造プロセスの最終ステップとして、ク
ライアントデバイスが、自動的に非対称鍵ペアを作成するメカニズムを記述して
いる。このように作成された秘密鍵は、クライアントデバイス内蔵の安全なマイ
クロプロセッサ内に格納され、この鍵は、外部デバイスに決して提示されない。
このように作成された秘密鍵は、ローカルの製造システムに伝送され、このシス
テムは、鍵と共にクライアントシリアル番号を安全なデータベースに記録する。
このデータベースは、その後、中央配信システムに安全に伝送され、ここで、ク
ライアントとの安全な通信を実行するために使用される。
【００５７】 この独自の新しい鍵作成の応用は、秘密鍵が、ロジックアナライザ等の特殊な
ツールを使用して識別される場合がある、クライアントの外部コンポーネントに
は決して提示されないため、鍵の分散の問題を解決する。この代わりに、この鍵
は、公開鍵によって最初に暗号化されたメッセージを解読するために、セキュリ

【００６０】 伝送用にテレビ視聴オブジェクトを準備する第一のステップは、この特定の 事例において使用される伝送メカニズムを認識すること、及びこのメカニズム 用にカスタマイズしたデータベースの下位集合のスライスを作成することであ る。例えば、このデータベースは、国内のすべての番組に関するテレビ視聴オ ブジェクトを含む可能性がある。しかしながら、テレビ視聴オブジェクトが、 ローカルテレビ信号でのVBI変調を使用して送信される場合、搬送に使用され るテレビ放送の到達範囲で視聴可能な番組に関連するテレビ視聴オブジェクト しか、関連するスライス内には含まれるべきではない。このテレビ視聴オブジ ェクトの一部が、特定の地理的地域に関するプロモーション内容を含む場合、 こうしたオブジェクトは、他の地理的地域に伝送されるべきではない。
【００６１】 本発明の好適な実施形態において、データベースをトラバースし、伝送用の スライスを作成する速度及び周期性は、有効なコスト／性能トレードオフを可 能にするために、自由な形で調整することができる。例えば、特定の伝送方法 のためのスライスを、一日おきまたは毎時に作成すればよい可能性がある。
【００６２】 各スライスを準備する最終ステップは、短寿命の対称鍵を使用して、スライ スを暗号化することである。安全なプロトコルを使用して認証されたクライア ントデバイスのみが、スライスを解読して、その中のテレビ視聴オブジェクト にアクセスすることを可能にするこの対称鍵のコピーを有する。

【００６４】 スライスの反復放送が必要となるのは、データを搬送する信号が、各クライ アントに確実に到着することが保証されない可能性があるためである。クライ アントデバイスの電源がオフになっている可能性、または信号の受信を妨げる ものが存在する可能性がある。伝送スライスが、すべてのクライアントデバイ スで適切に受領される確率を高くするために、スライスは、更新されたスライ スの伝送が可能となるまで、連続的に再放送される。
【００６５】 本発明の好適な実施形態では、スライスを伝送するために、テレビ信号等の 放送メカニズムを使用する。しかしながら、モデムまたはインターネット接続 等の接続ベースのメカニズムを介したダウンロードを提供することが、望まし い。接続ベースのメカニズムを使用することにより、通常は、時間ベースの使 用料金が発生し、スライスの伝送に費やされる時間を最小化することが望まし くなる。

【００６８】 本発明は、データパケットが受領される時刻を追跡する。選択された期間よ りも古いデータパケットは、周期的にステージングエリアからパージされる。 これにより、スライスのすべての部分が送信されるのを待ち続け、無期限に容 量を消費することが回避される。
【００６９】 特に、放送媒体上でオブジェクトを伝送している時、電送されるデータには 、様々な種類のエラーが、発生する可能性がある。各データパケットには、誤 り検出符号（例えばパリティフィールドまたはCRCコード等）がスタンプされ る。エラーが検出されると、そのデータパケットは、単純に廃棄される。放送 カルーセルは、その後の時点で、このデータパケットを伝送し、これは、適切 に受領される可能性が高くなる。したがって、任意のサイズのスライスを、確 実に送信することが可能である。これは、すべての部分が適切に受領されるま で、クライアントにおいてオブジェクトの受領部分をステージングするという 代償を払って達成される。

【００７２】 クライアントは、データベースに設定された時刻までに、適切な認証オブジ ェクトを受領しなかった場合、（サービスプロバイダによる指定の通り）視聴 者に対するほとんどのサービスの拒否を開始する。更に、認証オブジェクトは 、伝送されたスライスの解読に必要となる一つ以上の寿命制限ダウンロード鍵 を含む。クライアントシステムは、自己の認証ができない場合、オブジェクト を解読することが全くできなくなる。
【００７３】 各認証スライスは、個別に作成及び伝送される。このスライスに関して、放 送による伝送が使用される場合、関連するすべての認証は、他のすべてのスラ イスと同一に扱われ、他のすべてのデータと共にカルーセルされる。電話接続 を介した場合等の直接伝送が使用される場合は、そのクライアントに関する認 証スライスのみが伝送される。
【００７４】 5. クライアントデバイスは、完全なデータベーススライスを受領した後、前に 説明した方法を使用して、その中に含まれる新しいオブジェクトをデータベー スに追加する。

【００７７】 加えて、クライアントデバイスの動作により、テレビ視聴オブジェクトに記 録するべきである重要なデータが発生する可能性がある。例えば、クライアン トのハードディスクドライブからの読み出し時にエラーが発生する可能性があ り、または、デバイスの内部温度が動作パラメータを超える可能性がある。そ の他の同様のタイプの情報は、オブジェクトの適切なダウンロードの失敗、様 々なディスクベースの動作での容量の不足、または電源の急速なオンオフとな る場合がある。
【００７８】 2. 即時的または周期的とすることが可能な特定の時刻に、クライアントシステ ムは、直接接続104を介して（通常は、電話及び／またはインターネット接続 を介して）中央サイトに接触する。クライアントデバイスは、秘密鍵によって 暗号化された自己を特定するバイトシーケンスを送信する。サーバは、データ ベースから、そのクライアントデバイスの照合用テレビ視聴オブジェクトを取 り出し、この中に格納されている鍵を使用して、バイトシーケンスを解読する 。同時に、サーバは、秘密鍵で暗号化したバイトシーケンスをクライアントに 送信し、クライアントに対して、このセッション用の新しい一時暗号鍵を与え る。

【００８０】 認証段階が成功したと仮定すると、両者は、全二重電話回線を、二つの一方 向放送チャネルとして扱う。新しいスライスが、クライアントに配信され、収 集される視聴データが、送り返される。この接続は、すべてのデータが配信さ れた時に終了する。

【００８５】 こうした分離の更に別の利点は、サービス動作を向上させるために収集した データと、個々の視聴者を識別できるデータとを分離するメカニズムを提供す ることである。こうした識別データは、法的な理由とサービスに対する個人の 信頼を高める理由とから、プライバシを保護することが重要である。例えば、 視聴者の視聴選択記録を含む視聴オブジェクトに割り当てられたナビゲート可 能属性が、視聴者の郵便番号のみを含む場合、これは、こうしたオブジェクト を更に処理しても、個人のアイデンティティへと戻るパスを構築できないこと を意味する。
【００８６】 サーバでは、こうしたオブジェクトをデータベースから選び出し、必要に応 じて処分するために、周期的なタスクが、呼び出される。例えば、視聴者の行 動を示すオブジェクトは、全体的な視聴者行動モデルに集約され、個々の視聴 者を特定する可能性のある情報は、廃棄される。動作情報を含むオブジェクト は、分析タスクに転送され、これにより、顧客サービス担当者は、潜在的な問 題を変更することができる。トランザクション情報を含むオブジェクトは、処 理のためにトランザクションまたはコマースシステムに転送される。

説明及び放映時刻と、チャネル番号及び識別番号等のケーブル、衛星、または放
送信号発信者情報と、俳優、ジャンル、及び放映時刻その他の視聴者嗜好情報と
、拡張データベースソフトウェア、アプリケーションソフトウェア、及びオペレ
ーティングシステムその他のソフトウェアと、嗜好ベクトル、及び人口統計分析
その他の統計モデリング情報と、デジタルデータとして表すことが可能な他の任
意の情報とがある。
【００８９】番組ガイドオブジェクトに適用される方法 番組ガイドオブジェクトは、クライアントシステムで実行されるソフトウェア
が、データベース内のオブジェクトによって記述される利用可能な番組及びチャ
ネルの中から選択した、クライアントシステムのユーザが関心を有する番組のチ
ャネル合わせ、受信、録画、及び表示を行うために必要なすべての情報を含む。
【００９０】 この番組ガイド情報は、サービスプロバイダによって定期的に更新される。こ
れは、例えば、こうした情報の商業サプライヤまたはその他の放送予定の情報源
から、何らかの形で番組ガイド情報を取得するプロバイダによって処理される。
このデータは、その後、相互関係のある視聴オブジェクトの集合への情報を減ら
すために、広く理解されているソフトウェア手法を使用して処理される。
【００９１】 再び図4を参照すると、番組ガイドオブジェクト間の一般的な関係が、表示さ
れている。テレビ「ネットワーク」オブジェクト407は、放送が、電波、ケーブ
ル、またはその他の適切な媒体の何れを介して行われるかに関係なく、テレビ番
組を予約及び放送する任意の存在である。テレビ「番組」オブジェクト401は、

の組を記述する集約視聴オブジェクトを提供することができる。例えば、「Star
-Trek」集合は、このブランド名に関連するすべての番組ガイドオブジェクトに
対する参照を含む可能性がある。明らかに、こうした形で、番組の任意の組を集
約することができる。集約オブジェクトは、ディレクトリに類似する。例えば、
Star Trek集合は、階層ネームスペース内の「/showcases/Star Trek」において

れていない番組ガイドオブジェクト作成の様々な用途及び方法は、数多く存在す
る可能性がある。
【００９５】 番組ガイドオブジェクトは、アプリケーションソフトウェアによって、五種類
の方法で使用される。
【００９６】 1. 最も単純なケースにおいて、視聴者は、現在の番組またはまもなく利用可能 になる番組を見分けるために、こうしたオブジェクトの閲覧を希望する場合が ある。アプリケーションソフトウェアは、データベースによって記述されるオ ブジェクトの関係を、視聴者にとって都合が良く有効な何らかの形態の視覚的 及び聴覚的インタフェースにマッピングする。視聴者は、関心のある特定の番 組を示すことが可能であり、その結果、放送時にローカル記憶に番組を録画す ること等、アプリケーション固有の何らかの行動が生じる。
【００９７】 2. アプリケーションソフトウェアは、視聴者が関心を有する可能性のある番組 を選択するために、番組ガイドオブジェクトを直接処理することもできる。こ の処理は、通常、結果として利用可能なあらゆる番組の優先順位を作成する統 計モデルと組み合わせた過去に視聴した番組の分析に基づく。優先度の最も高 い番組は、放送時にローカル記憶に番組を録画すること等、アプリケーション 固有の方法で処理できる。このように策定された優先順位の一部は、ケース1 のような追加選択のために、視聴者に提示することができる。
【００９８】 当業者には容易に理解されるように、例えば米国特許第5,758,257号等、過 去の視聴履歴および明示的な選択に基づいて、視聴者のために番組を選択する 方法を中心とする従来技術は、大量に存在する。本願において説明する方法は 、番組の放送または伝送ではなく、番組の取り込みに関する優先度を示し、こ の番組が放送される時期に関する時間的制約が存在しないため、こうした手法 に比べ独自であり新しい。こうした方法に関する更なる詳細は、本明細書にお いの後で説明する。
【００９９】 一般には、番組の明示的な視聴者の選択は、取り込みに関して最高の優先度 を有し、本明細書で説明する嗜好手法を使用した番組の選択は、これに続く。
【０１００】 3. クライアントシステムは、テレビ放送の受信、またはイントラネットまたは インターネット等のネットワークを通じたWebページへのアクセスに関する少 数の入力能力を有する。各入力でどのようにチャネル合わせを行い、取り込ん だテレビ信号またはWebページをどのように処理するかを選択するために、予 約方法が、使用される。
【０１０１】 図6を参照すると、一般に、視聴者が関心を有する番組は、番組ガイドオブ ジェクトに記述されるように、任意の時間に、任意のチャネルで放送される。 加えて、関心を有する番組は、イントラネットまたはインターネット等のネッ トワークのWebページのユニバーサルリソースロケータ（URL）である可能性が ある。特定のWebサイトまたはページの位置またはURLを更に記述するために、 チャネルのメタファが使用される。
【０１０２】 例えば、視聴者は、WebサイトのURLをチャネルとして指定することにより、 Webサイトに「チャネルを合わせる」ことができる。このチャネルが選択され た時は、常に、このWebサイトが表示される。Webページを、関心のある番組と して指定することも可能であり、所定の時刻にWebページのスナップショット が取り出され、記録される。
【０１０３】 このスケジューラは、上のようなケースで作成される可能性のある番組視聴 嗜好の優先度リスト603を、入力として受け入れる。予約方法601は、その後、 このリストを、関心のあるプログラムが実際に放送される時期を示す番組ガイ ドオブジェクト604のデータベースと比較する。その後、視聴者の明示的また は派生的な優先番組にとって最適となる利用可能記憶領域606に対する時刻予 約607が、作成される。こうした方法に関する更なる詳細は、本明細書におい て後で行う。

組の取り込みを要求することが可能であり、この結果として、こうした番組につ
いて可能な最高の優先度が生じる。代わりに、視聴者は、場合によっては特定の
番組の宣伝スポットに反応して、または番組の視聴中にも、視聴者のインタフェ
ースを介して提供される機会を使用して、明示的に嗜好を表現することができる

告、その他から、嗜好を推測することが可能である。

に基づく。
