Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly judge the focal level of the peripheral image of the eye without using any expensive optical system.
SOLUTION: This device comprises an image pickup means 20 for imaging the eye, a filter 31 for extracting prescribed frequency components from the imaged eye picture, an integrating means 32 for integrating the prescribed frequency components obtained through the filter 31 in one screen, a focal level deciding part 33 for comparing the frequency component integral value obtained by the integrating means 32 with a preliminarily set focal threshold, a pupil center judging part 36 for deciding the central part of a pupil from the imaged eye picture, and an iris processing part 40 for extracting, registering, and authenticating iris information from the imaged eye image. In this case, a frame in a prescribed range from the center of the eye is defined as an eye area, and a frequency component integral value in the eye area is compared with the focal threshold so that the focal level of the eye picture can be easily and quickly judged, and the eye picture suitable for the iris authentication can be obtained.
COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO

2. Description of the Related Art As a method for recognizing an individual by using human iris information, a method described in Japanese Patent Publication No. 5-84166 is known. In general, an iris authentication device uses near-infrared illumination and the telephoto lens is applied to the person to be authenticated.
By taking an eye image with two video cameras, extracting iris information from the obtained eye image, and comparing and collating with the data of the iris information database already registered,
Personal authentication is performed. In this personal authentication, in order to accurately extract the iris information of the person to be authenticated, how to accurately capture the eye image is a major factor, and it is necessary to capture the eye in a desired size on the capturing screen.

For this reason, the eye position is detected from the imaged image of the entire face, and only the eye is zoomed up by a zoom lens or the like to photograph the eye image in a desired size. In addition, it is introduced in Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 10-40386, etc. 2
The camera system has a wide-angle camera that captures the entire face and a mobile telephoto camera that captures only the eyes, and detects the position of the eyes from the face image or upper body image captured by the wide-angle camera to obtain a wide-angle image. It is transmitted to the movement control part of the mobile telephoto camera as coordinate information in the inside. Then, based on this position information, the mobile telephoto camera is turned to the person to be authenticated to photograph the eye image in a desired size, and detailed iris information is obtained.

As described above, according to the present embodiment, the influence of the hair or the frame of the eyeglasses is excluded from the image pickup screen,
Since the focus degree specialized for the features around the eyes is simply and accurately obtained, it is possible to quickly determine whether or not the captured eye image is an image suitable for iris authentication. Further, since the configuration is such that only the focused eye image is captured and the iris information is extracted, it is possible to use a low-cost optical system such as a fixed-focus lens, and the eye image acquisition means can be made compact and inexpensive. It becomes feasible.

As described above, according to the above-described embodiments, the in-focus state is determined in real time in the same frame from the captured eye image, and only the focused image is taken into the image memory or the like to extract the iris information. Since it is possible to use the optical system such as a fixed-focus lens, a low-priced optical system can be used, and the eye image acquisition unit can be downsized and reduced in price. Further, since focus processing specialized for the eye image is performed, high-speed focus determination and eye image capture can be performed, and authentication processing can be performed in a short time.
