In the conventional type in which a display element is directly enlarged by a concave mirror or the like, a large display element has to be used to some extent, and a small display device cannot be constructed. Further, in the case of a method of projecting the image of the display element once in the air, a small display element can be used, and the optical system can observe a large screen display at low cost. The exit pupil position of the system was short, and it was necessary to arrange the eyepiece optical system immediately before the head, so that it was not possible to observe the entire screen when holding and observing with the hand.

In the case of using such a small-sized display element, it is not possible to observe a sufficiently large image simply by enlarging with an optical system such as a magnifying glass, because the magnification is insufficient. Therefore, the relay optical system once enlarges and projects the image of the display element, and the image projected by the relay optical system is further enlarged by the eyepiece optical system, and at the same time, it has the function of converging the light flux from the relay optical system to the observer's eyeball. It is important to configure with an eyepiece optical system.

A projection display device according to the present invention comprises a display element for displaying an image, a relay optical system for projecting the image displayed on the display element or an intermediate image thereof, and a light beam from the relay optical system for an eyeball of an observer. And an eyepiece optical system having a convergence function converging toward the optical axis. As a relay optical system, an eccentricity composed of a prism member formed of a medium having a refractive index (n) of more than 1 (n> 1) Using a prism optical system, the prism member emits a light beam emitted from the display element into the prism, at least one reflecting surface that reflects the light beam in the prism, and emits the light beam out of the prism. An emission surface, at least one reflection surface of which has a curved surface shape that gives power to a light beam, and the curved surface shape has a rotationally asymmetric surface shape that corrects aberrations caused by eccentricity. Intended to be, the reflecting surface of the prism member is what is composed of rotationally asymmetric curved surface configuration that corrects aberration caused by giving and eccentric power light beam upon reflection.

A refractive optical element such as a lens can have power only by giving a curvature to its boundary surface. Therefore, when a light beam is refracted at the boundary surface of the lens, chromatic aberration due to the chromatic dispersion characteristics of the refractive optical element is inevitably generated. As a result, another refractive optical element is generally added for the purpose of correcting chromatic aberration.

On the other hand, a reflecting optical element such as a mirror or a prism does not generate chromatic aberration in principle even if its reflecting surface has power, and another optical element is used only for the purpose of correcting chromatic aberration. No need to add. Therefore, in the optical system using the reflective optical element, the number of constituent optical elements can be reduced from the viewpoint of chromatic aberration correction, as compared with the optical system using the refractive optical element.

At the same time, since the reflection optical system using the reflection optical element folds the optical path, the size of the optical system itself can be reduced as compared with the refractive optical system.

Further, since the reflection surface has a higher sensitivity to eccentricity error than the refraction surface, high accuracy is required for assembly adjustment.
However, among the reflective optical elements, since the relative positional relationship between the surfaces of the prisms is fixed, the eccentricity may be controlled as a single prism, and unnecessary assembly accuracy and adjustment man-hours are unnecessary.

Further, the prism has an entrance surface, an exit surface, which are refraction surfaces, and a reflection surface, and has a greater degree of freedom for aberration correction than a mirror having only a reflection surface. In particular, by allowing the reflection surface to share most of the desired power and reducing the power of the entrance surface and the exit surface, which are refraction surfaces, the degree of freedom in correcting aberrations is larger than that of a mirror, while maintaining the degree of freedom for aberrations. Compared with such a refractive optical element, the occurrence of chromatic aberration can be extremely reduced. Further, since the inside of the prism is filled with a transparent body having a higher refractive index than air, the optical path length can be made longer than that of air. Thinning and miniaturization are possible.

Further, the projection optical system is required to have good imaging performance not only at the center but also at the periphery. In the case of a general coaxial optical system, the sign of the ray height of the off-axis light beam is reversed before and after the stop, and thus the off-axis aberration is worsened due to the loss of symmetry of the optical element with respect to the stop. Therefore, by arranging the refracting surface with the diaphragm interposed therebetween, it is general to sufficiently satisfy the symmetry with respect to the diaphragm and correct the off-axis aberration.

According to the present invention, the light incident from the display element is incident on the prism, at least one reflection surface for reflecting the light inside the prism, and the exit surface for emitting the light outside the prism. Having, at least one reflecting surface has a curved surface shape that gives power to the light flux, and the curved surface shape uses a prism member configured with a rotationally asymmetric surface shape that corrects aberration generated by eccentricity, By correcting the eccentric aberration, it is possible to satisfactorily correct not only the center but also the off-axis aberration.

The shape of the rotationally asymmetric curved surface is not limited, but it is desirable to use a free curved surface. The free-form surface is, for example, a free-form surface defined by the expression (a) in U.S. Pat. No. 6,124,989 (Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2000-66105), and the Z axis of the definition is the axis of the free-form surface.

For the above reasons, the present invention uses an eccentric prism optical system using a prism member as a relay optical system and enlarges and projects an image displayed on a display element near an eyepiece optical system. A small and high-performance relay optical system can be configured.

In this case, the light beam which forms the primary image projected by the relay optical system forms a primary image while diverging from the relay optical system. The eyepiece optical system needs to have a convergence function of efficiently converging the divergent light flux to the observer's eye. If the eyepiece optical system does not have this convergence function, the luminous flux forming the primary image reaches the observer while diverging, so that the luminous flux incident on the eyeball and recognized as an image is a light beam emitted from the display element. Only a very dark image can be observed because it becomes a very small part of the light beam.

With the above arrangement, the light beam emitted from the display element and passed through the relay optical system is effectively focused on the observer's eyeball, and a display with high illumination efficiency is obtained.
Even in a train or the like, there is no need to worry about the display contents being viewed by a neighbor.

Accordingly, in the present invention, the focal length of the eyepiece optical system is optimized, and the exit pupil of the eyepiece optical system is moved from the eyepiece optical system so that the entire screen can be observed even when the display device is at least 50 mm away from the eye. It is important that they are at least 80 mm apart. That is, assuming that the axial distance between the exit pupil position of the eyepiece optical system and the surface on the exit pupil side of the eyepiece optical system is EXPe, it is preferable to satisfy the following conditional expression: 80 mm <EXPe <1000 mm (1) . If the lower limit of 80 mm of the above conditional expression is exceeded, the entire screen cannot be observed unless the eyes are brought close to the device and observed,
It will be difficult to see. Also, when operating the operation buttons and switches arranged on the device, if the lower limit is exceeded,
The distance between the device and the observer's face is too short, and it is no longer possible to bring a finger between the device and the face for operation. On the other hand, if the upper limit of 1000 mm is exceeded, on the contrary, it becomes too far, the screen becomes small, and fine images cannot be observed, and at the same time, it becomes inaccessible for the operation and cannot be operated.

More preferably, it is important to satisfy the following condition: 100 mm <EXPe <1000 mm (1-1) The lower limit of 10
If the distance exceeds 0 mm, the observer cannot operate his / her hand between the display device and the observer's face because the observer operates the operation buttons and the like arranged on the display device instead of the display screen. You will not be able to do it.

More preferably, it is important to satisfy the following condition: 300 mm <EXPe <1000 mm (1-2) The lower limit of 30

Now, the power of the decentered optical system and the power of the optical surface will be defined. When the optical axis direction is set in the Z-axis direction, the eccentric directions of the eccentric optical system and the optical surface are set in the Y-axis direction, and the direction orthogonal to them is set in the X-axis direction, two directions in the YZ plane and the XZ plane are defined. For the rays in two directions, parallel rays slightly apart from the axial principal ray are incident on the decentered optical system and the optical surface, and the powers Px and Py are defined in the same manner as in paragraph [0049] of JP-A-11-194267. This conditional expression represents the ratio of the power of the eyepiece optical system to the power of the relay optical system. If the lower limit of 0 is exceeded, the power of the eyepiece optical system becomes too small (weak), and the size of the size which is easy to see is small. Since the display device does not have a viewing angle of view, the displayed image is too small to allow a fine display to be observed. If the upper limit of 2 is exceeded, the power of the relay optical system becomes too small (weak), so that a small-sized display element cannot be used. As a result, the size of the device becomes large, and the power consumption increases. Become.

In the first mode of use of the present invention, as shown in FIG. 1, the eyepiece optical system 32 is constituted by an optical element 34 having at least a reflecting action. In this case, it is desirable to arrange the operation button 33 on the main body 30 of the display device before the relay optical system 31 when viewed from the observer side.
With this arrangement, it is possible to avoid the problem that the image is blocked every time the button is operated without interrupting the optical path with the hand that operates the operation button 33. Further, by disposing the relay optical system 31 in front of the eyepiece optical system 32, it is possible to easily observe the image reflected by the eyepiece optical system 32. In FIG. 1, the position of the observer's eyeball is indicated by E. The image display element is arranged on the main body 30 side of the relay optical system 31, but is not shown.

In the second mode of use of the present invention, as shown in FIG. 2, the eyepiece optical system 32 is constituted by an optical element 35 having at least a transmissive action. In this case, it is desirable to arrange the operation button 33 on the main body 30 of the display device before the eyepiece optical system 32 when viewed from the observer side. With this arrangement, it is possible to avoid the problem that the image is blocked every time the button is operated without interrupting the optical path with the hand that operates the operation button 33. In addition, by arranging the eyepiece optical system 32 before the relay optical system 31, it is possible to observe an image without difficulty.

Next, the eyepiece optical system will be described. Although the eyepiece optical system is treated as a surface having no diffusivity in numerical examples described later, it is more preferable that the eyepiece optical system has a certain degree of diffusivity. Eyepiece optical system 32 arranged near the projected image
As shown in FIG. 3, it is important to selectively direct the scattered light 52 in the direction of the observer with little scattering. As shown in FIG. 4, the eyepiece optical system 3 having a large scattering property
In the case of No. 2, it is preferable that illuminance unevenness generally does not easily occur from the viewing position. However, in the portable display device of the present invention, the number of observers is often one, and when the incident light 51 is scattered, However, the number of light rays that reach the observer's eyeball with respect to the incident light 51 is reduced, and the illumination light is wasted. Furthermore, if the brightness of the lighting is increased to compensate for the brightness of the display screen that has been wasted and darkened, the power consumption will increase, and the use time will be extremely short, and the display device will be much smaller. On the other hand, a large and heavy battery must be installed. In order to avoid this problem, it is important to use a screen having a low scattering property as the eyepiece optical system 32 in the present invention, as shown in FIG. Although FIGS. 3 and 4 show the eyepiece optical system 32 as an optical element having a reflecting action, the same applies to the case where an optical element having a transmitting action is used.

More preferably, the diffusivity of the screen surface is such that the intensity of the diffused light in the direction at an angle of 20 ° with respect to the intensity in the direction of regular reflection on the optical surface of the eyepiece optical system 32 is 50% or less. Is preferable from the viewpoint of effective use of light. More preferably, a material having a low scattering property in which the diffusion intensity in a direction in which the angle with the direction is 10 ° becomes 50% or less is more preferable.

More preferably, as shown in FIG. 5, the scattering range 53 of the eyepiece optical system 32 is preferably larger than the horizontal direction corresponding to both eyes of the observer in the vertical direction. When the scattering range 53 is large in the horizontal direction with respect to the vertical direction, the light beam from the relay optical system 31 can be effectively guided to both eyes of the observer, and can be observed with both eyes.

In the present invention, the display position of the virtual image observed by the observer's eyeball is configured to be presented near the eyepiece optical system 32, but is presented further to the observer side than the surface of the eyepiece optical system 32. By doing so, it is possible to give a further sense of reality to the displayed video. In addition, when the surface of the eyepiece optical system 32 has the above-described diffusivity, it is possible to observe a clear image by matching the virtual image position with the diffusive surface of the eyepiece optical system 32. Become. Also, especially in the case of an image with a small number of display pixels,
By intentionally shifting the position having a diffusibility from the position of the display image at a minute distance, a smooth image can be obtained by the low-pass filter effect.

More preferably, by providing a mechanism for moving the display element in the direction of the optical axis, the position of the real image projected from the relay optical system 31 is moved, and the position of the virtual image formed by the eyepiece optical system 32 is set to infinity. It is desirable to be able to move to the vicinity of the eyepiece optical system 32 from a distance. With this mechanism, it is possible to adjust the virtual image position to a position desired by the observer, and it is possible to select an image position that is easy for both myopic, hyperopic, and presbyopic people to see.

Further, when the eyepiece optical system 32 is constituted by a Fresnel element such as a Fresnel lens or a Fresnel reflector, the thickness of the device when the eyepiece optical system 32 is folded can be reduced, and the portability is excellent. Display device.

More preferably, the eyepiece optical system 32 is also preferably formed using a rotationally asymmetric surface. In particular, in the case of an eccentric optical system in which an axial principal ray that passes through the center of the object, passes through the center of the iris of the observer, and reaches the center of the fundus eccentrically enters the eyepiece optical system 32, the eyepiece optical system 32 is rotated. By using an asymmetric surface, it is possible to correct trapezoidal distortion of an image caused by eccentricity and eccentric aberration such as inclination of an image plane. Further, when the relay optical system 31 is configured by an eccentric prism optical system, it becomes possible to share the correction of the eccentric aberration with the relay optical system 31, which is more preferable.

Next, the relay optical system 31 will be described. As the relay optical system 31 according to the present invention, various types of eccentric prism optical system having one or more internal reflections or a plurality of eccentric prism optical systems already proposed by the present inventors can be used. Among them, a representative one is exemplified, as in the decentered prism of Example 1, provided with three reflecting surfaces, of which the third reflecting surface also serves as an incident surface for receiving light from the display element. And the first reflection surface is formed by a surface also serving as an emission surface.

This prism is composed of three surfaces.
Since there are two reflecting surfaces, it is possible to disperse the power to three reflecting surfaces, and it is possible to reduce the occurrence of aberration. Further, since the optical paths intersect within the prism, the optical path length can be made longer than that of a prism having a structure in which the optical path is simply folded.

This prism type, which serves both as the first reflecting surface and the emitting surface, is used to largely bend the light beam at the first reflecting surface and to reflect the light beam to the emitting surface with a small bending angle at the second reflecting surface. The eccentric prism having such a shape has a high degree of freedom in aberration correction and generates less aberration. further,
Since the symmetry of the arrangement of the two reflecting surfaces is high, aberrations occurring on the two reflecting surfaces are corrected by the two reflecting surfaces.
Less occurrence of aberration. In addition, because the optical path forms a crossing optical path inside the prism, the optical path length can be longer than that of a prism that simply folds the optical path, making the prism smaller than the optical path length. can do.

In the projection display device of the present invention, when the eyepiece optical system 32 can be opened and closed from the main body 30, as shown in FIG. It can also be used as a projector for projecting images onto a projector. In this case, a mechanism for moving the display element to adjust the position of the projected image to the wall surface 54 is required. When the brightness of the projection display device is not enough,
As shown in FIG. 8B, an external light source device 38 can be attached to, for example, the lower surface of the main body 30 so that the built-in light source 37 for observation through the ordinary eyepiece optical system 32 shown in FIG. Can be moved from the use position to the outside of the use position as shown by the arrow in the figure, and the display element 3 can be illuminated from the back with illumination light from the external light source 39 in the external light source device. In the case of FIG. 8B, the focus can be adjusted by moving the display element 3 in the direction of the arrow so as to approach the eccentric prism 10 constituting the relay optical system 31.

As shown in FIG. 9, two relay optical systems 31L and 32R are used, and left and right display elements are arranged corresponding to the respective relay optical systems 31R and 32L. By displaying the binocular parallax image on each display element in common, the optical paths from the left and right display elements are separated for the left and right eyes, and an image with parallax can be observed for the left and right eyes of the observer. The configuration enables binocular stereoscopic vision, and it is possible to provide a projection display device that can observe a stereoscopic image without special glasses.

Although the constituent parameters of the first to third embodiments will be described later, the coordinate system is a reverse ray tracing from the position of the exit pupil 1 (observer pupil) to the display element 3, and as shown in FIG. 2 is defined as a light beam that passes vertically through the center of the exit pupil 1 of the optical system and reaches the center of the display element 3. In the reverse ray tracing, the center of the exit pupil 1 is set as the origin of the decentered optical surface of the decentered optical system, the direction along the axial principal ray 2 is set as the Z-axis direction, and the exit of the eyepiece optical system 32 of the optical system from the exit pupil 1 is set. The direction toward the surface facing the pupil 1 is defined as the positive direction of the Z-axis, the surface in the drawing is defined as the YZ plane, the direction passing through the origin and orthogonal to the YZ plane, and the direction from the front to the back of the paper is defined as the positive X-axis direction. The axis constituting the right-handed orthogonal coordinate system with the X axis and the Z axis is defined as the Y axis.

For the eccentric surface, the amount of eccentricity from the center of the origin of the optical system to the top of the surface (X-axis direction, Y-axis direction, Z-axis direction)
The axial directions are X, Y, and Z, respectively, and the X-axis of the center axis of the surface (for a free-form surface, the Z-axis of the formula (a), and for an aspheric surface, the Z-axis of the formula (b) described later) , Y-axis, and Z-axis tilt angles (α, β, γ (°), respectively)
And is given. In this case, the positive α and β mean counterclockwise with respect to the positive direction of each axis, and the positive γ means clockwise with respect to the positive direction of the Z axis. The rotation of the center axis of the surface by α, β, γ depends on the center axis of the surface and its XYZ.
The orthogonal coordinate system is first rotated counterclockwise by α around the X axis, and then the center axis of the rotated surface is changed to Y in the new coordinate system.
The coordinate system rotated counterclockwise around the axis by β and rotated once is also rotated counterclockwise around the Y axis by β, and then the center axis of the surface rotated twice is added to the new coordinate system. This is to make a γ rotation clockwise around the Z axis of a simple coordinate system.
