[0003] As a solution to these problems, when an image is formed with ink, a recording material, such as plain paper, is coated with a material for fixing the dye in the ink on the surface of the recording material in advance, or the surface of the recording material is fixed. Use of a recording material coated with a white pigment or a water-soluble polymer is disclosed in JP-A-56-86789, JP-A-55-144172, and JP-A-52-5.
No. 3012 or JP-A-56-89594. However, this method has the inconvenience of not being able to freely use nearby paper because it is necessary to purchase specially coated paper in advance, and also has the problem of rewriting with a pencil or pen. there were.

In order to suppress bleeding at a color boundary such as a two-color overlapping portion, a surfactant is added to the ink to increase the ink permeability.
No. 5,269, for example. This method is effective for solving bleeding at a color boundary such as a two-color overlapped portion and smear (image stain due to contact after printing) because ink penetrates into recording paper at a high speed. Image cannot be resolved. Further, a method of adding a volatile solvent to the ink is disclosed in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 55-66976. The same effect as that of the permeable ink can be obtained, but the nozzle is liable to be clogged. In addition, the use of ink containing a pigment as a coloring agent has also been increasing in order to improve water resistance and light resistance, but it is difficult to maintain the reliability around the nozzle such as clogging with the ink containing the pigment, Further, when high color reproducibility such as a photographic image or CG is required, there is a problem that the color development of cyan or magenta becomes insufficient and a satisfactory image cannot be obtained.

In order to solve such a problem, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 56-89595 discloses that a polymer solution such as carboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, or polyvinyl acetate is sprayed on a recording material in advance. An ink jet recording method has been proposed in which printing is performed by ejecting ink to a portion where the polymer solution has adhered. However, although this method can improve the sharpness of a printed image, it does not provide an effect on improving the dryness of the printed image, so that the effect of improving the image quality of a color image is not so recognized. Also,
An ink jet recording method is disclosed in which an image recording accelerating liquid containing a compound that insolubilizes a dye in an ink is deposited on a recording material by an ink jet method, and then the ink is ejected to a portion where the image recording accelerating liquid is adhered to perform printing. 64-63
185, JP-A-8-20159 or JP-A-8-20161, but this method has a large amount of water attached to the two-color overlapping portion, so that bleeding at the color boundary can be sufficiently prevented. And there is a problem that show-through of the ink is large. Further, there is a problem that cockling (undulation) of the recording material occurs. In addition, since the image recording accelerating liquid is sprayed by the ink jet head, the viscosity and surface tension of the liquid are restricted in order to obtain stable ejection, and the nozzle diameter and the composition of the liquid are restricted in order to prevent clogging. There is a problem that the degree of freedom is significantly reduced due to the added condition.

As a method for solving this problem, a method in which a roller is used to coat the entire surface of the paper is disclosed in JP-A-7-15.
No. 6538 (hereinafter referred to as a conventional example). FIG. 6 is a schematic sectional view showing a configuration in which a coating material is applied to a recording medium using a roller in a conventional example. In the figure, a recording medium 63 is wound around a platen roller 61 rotated by a motor or the like (not shown) with a holding chuck 62. Further, a coating material 65 is stored in the coating unit 64,
The coating material 65 is agitated and supplied by rollers 66,
Coating roller 6 by thinning rollers 67 and 68
9 is thinned on the roller surface. Then, the coating roller 69 is rotated while being pressed onto the recording medium 63 wound around the rotating platen roller 61, and the surface of the recording medium 63 is coated with the coating material 65.
At the same time, the inkjet head 70 performs recording by discharging ink onto the surface of the recording medium 63 coated with the coating material 65. As described above, according to the conventional method in which the pretreatment liquid for improving the image quality is applied to the recording area in advance by the application roller, the liquid having a relatively high viscosity is applied thinly as compared with the method of spraying using the ejection head. Can be
It is excellent in that image bleeding and color bleed can be further reduced.

Further, as another invention, when the pretreatment liquid application operation by the pretreatment liquid application means is not performed, a counter roller separation process for separating the counter roller from the application roller is performed, thereby changing the type of the pretreatment liquid. Is hardened when not used for a long time, and when the hardened state is remarkable, the counter roller and the application roller in the pretreatment liquid application means can be prevented from sticking to each other, and a smooth start can be obtained when the power is turned on. In addition, only when the pretreatment liquid application operation is performed by the pretreatment liquid application means, that is, only when the paper is interposed between the application roller and the counter roller, the application roller and the counter roller sandwich the paper to apply the pretreatment liquid. Since the operation is performed, the application roller and the counter roller do not join, so that the application roller and the counter roller do not naturally adhere to each other. Furthermore, by joining the counter roller to a cleaning roller that cleans the counter roller after the counter roller separation processing, the pretreatment liquid on the roller is returned to a viscosity within a normal specified value especially during an image recording operation including when the power is turned on. It is possible to reduce the time required for the operation.

FIG. 3 is a sectional view showing the configuration of a paper feed unit and a pretreatment liquid application unit of an image recording apparatus according to a second embodiment of the present invention. In the figure, the same reference numerals as those in FIG. 1 indicate the same components. In the present embodiment, the counter roller 26 is used except when the coating operation is performed on the paper 11 and when the power is turned off.
This is an example in which a counter roller separation process is performed to separate the application roller 25 from the application roller 25. The mechanism for separating the counter roller 26 from the application roller 25 can be easily achieved by a normal rotating mechanism using a cam, a solenoid, a motor, or the like. As shown in FIG. 3, a sensor 28 for detecting the leading end of the sheet is provided at a position at a distance L from the junction of the application roller 25 and the counter roller 26. The operation of the present embodiment will be described. The counter roller 26 is not shown in the drawing with respect to the application roller 25, but can be controlled to be separated or connected by a normal magnet or cam mechanism. Is far away. When a print command is received from a host machine such as a computer and the paper is started to be fed by the paper feed roller 12, the paper 11 a contacts the counter roller 26 by the waist of the paper itself and the paper guide 27, or at least the application roller 25 The counter roller 26 is passed through the junction between the application roller 25 and the counter roller 26 in a non-contact state, and the counter roller 26 is moved to the application roller 2 at a timing such that the sheet 11 protrudes by a length L from the junction.
5, the sheet 11 is sandwiched and the pretreatment liquid application operation is started. The length L is the timing at which the counter roller 26 is pressed against the coating roller 25, that is, the time from the start of paper feeding by the paper feeding roller 12, t is the paper feeding speed, and the length of the coating roller 25 and the counter roller 26 is from the paper feeding start point. Assuming that the distance to the junction is S, vt = S + L, that is, t = (S +
L) / v. Alternatively, as shown in FIG. 3 showing the second embodiment, a sensor 28 is provided at a point slightly shorter than the length L, and when the sensor 28 detects the leading end of the sheet, the point at which the counter roller 26 is pressed against the application roller 25 is determined. The sensor installation position may be determined so as to be L from the tip.

In the detection of the trailing edge of the sheet 11, the same calculation as in the detection of the leading edge is performed, or the feed unit and the pretreatment liquid application unit of the image recording apparatus according to the third embodiment of the present invention are used. As shown in FIG. 4 which is a cross-sectional view showing the configuration, the rear end of the sheet 11 passes through the junction between the application roller 25 and the counter roller 26 by a sensor 28 and a sensor 29 provided on the opposite side of the counter roller 26. The counter roller 26 can be released immediately before the operation. By this operation, the application roller 25 and the counter roller 26 do not come into contact with each other except when the paper 11 is applied, that is, when the paper 11 is between the counter roller 26 and the application roller 25, and the pretreatment liquid 22 is applied to the counter roller 26. Since there is no adhesion, the application roller 25 and the counter roller 26 do not adhere. Also, the cleaning roller 47 described above is used.
The cleaning device such as is unnecessary. The width (corresponding to the length L) of the non-application portion of the pretreatment liquid 22 at the leading end and the trailing end of the paper 11 is set within the range of the leading margin and the trailing margin of the recording area where a normal printer or the like is allowed. Just do it.
