改良されたコンピュータ化自動車サービスシステム
発明の背景および概要
さまざまなパラメータを測定または試験し、オペレータに整備または修理工程
の命令を与えるための、コンピュータ化自動車サービスおよび診断機器システム
は、一般に公知である。このようなシステムは中央制御プロセッサと、たとえば
車両取付型計測センサ、手動データ入力コンソール、および電子記憶データベー
スなどを含む、さまざまなデータ入力および記憶手段とを用いる。
車両取付型計器を用いるシステムにより、計器のセンサまたは測定装置は中央
プロセッサに測定信号を与えて車両状態のデータまたは算定値を比較することが
可能になる。入力または測定されたデータを提供することに加えて、車両取付型
センサは、さまざまな状態のライブまたはリアルタイムの監視を可能にする。
測定されたデータおよび、たとえばキーボードまたは同様の手段を用いて提供
されるオペレータが入力したデータは、予め記憶されたデータと比較するか、ま

モリ内に予め記憶されており、表示画面またはプリンタを介してオペレータに表
示または提示される。
さらに、そのようなシステムは、調整または修理の工程を通じてオペレータま
たは技術者を導くために、測定されたまたは入力されたデータに応答して表示さ
れるステップごとの調整または修理工程の命令を含み得る。
この発明はコンピュータ化車両サービスおよび診断システムに関し、より具体
的には、予め記憶されたデータを有するかまたは予め記憶されたデータおよびパ
ラメータを用いる遠隔に位置づけられたコンピュータと、インターネットを介し

る。具体的には、httpは、異なる型のコンピュータ間での情報の転送を可能
にし、特定のコンピュータアーキテクチャ(PC、Apple、RISCなど)
、オペレーティング・システム(MS−DOS、Windows95、WindowsNT、Uni
xなど)、または使用言語に関係なく、HTTPを処理できるコンピュータシス
テムはすべて、同じくHTTPを処理できる世界中のいずれのコンピュータとも
通信できるようにする。HTTP機器およびインベントリを用いることにより、
世界中のさまざまな場所のシステムが、共通の情報データベースを使用すること
ができ、情報の交換またはデータの共有が容易にできるようになる。さらに、離
れた場所にいる個人が、修理もしくはサービスの現場に置かれるコンピュータ制
御とリアルタイムで通信でき、またはその動作を指示することもできる。
現時点での最も注目すべきインターネットの特徴は、事実上どこからでも情報
を容易に要求かつ検索できるという点である。ユーザは、一旦ウェブ・ブラウザ
を自分のコンピュータにインストールしてインターネット・サービス・プロバイ
ダ(ISP)を介してインターネットに接続されると、世界中のどのワールド・
ワイド・ウェブ(WWW)サーバからのウェブ・ページにもアクセスできる。通
信規格は万国共通の性質を有するので、特殊な構成または互換性の要件は必要な
い。選択された遠隔の場所へアクセスしてデータまたはプログラムを得ることが
できるので、カスタム・ソフトウェアの長い開発サイクルに付随する問題、単一

い難さ、CD−ROMまたはフロッピーディスクを伴う周期的な更新、および標

インターネットおよびワールド・ワイド・ウェブの出現に先行して、1983
年9月13日に発行された米国特許番号第4,404,639号は、中央場所に
維持された最新のデータをサービス事業所に提供するためにさまざまなサービス
事業所に置かれ種々のデータベースを共有するコンピュータの通信ネットワーク
に向けられる。このようなネットワークは、しかしながら、専用のコンピュータ

この発明のまたさらなる局面は、ユーザに対してプロセスの選択を容易にし、

好ましい実施例の詳細な説明
この発明の好ましい実施例は、米国特許番号第4,383,370号および5
,208,646号(これらは両者ともここに引用により援用する)に開示され
るもののような、機械類のためのコンピュータ化測定およびサービスシステムの
性能向上に向けられる。
ハイパテキスト転送プロトコルに基づく自動車サービスシステムの一体化
好ましい実施例を参照して、まとめて「TCP/IP」と呼ばれる伝送制御プ
ロトコル(TCP)またはインターネット・プロトコル(IP)は、種々のハー
ドウェア・アーキテクチャとさまざまなオペレーティング・システムとを有する
相互接続されたネットワークまたはコンピュータ間に通信を提供するネットワー
ク・オペレーションのための1組のプロトコルを指す。TCP/IPはネットワ
ークカード・ドライバで通信するより低いレベルのプロトコルである。ネットワ
ークカード・ドライバはネットワーク・ハードウェアまたはプロトコル・スタッ
クの物理層と通信する。TCP/IPはデータのソースおよび宛先アドレスを供
給する。ファイル転送プロトコル(FTP)は異なるコンピュータ間でファイル

ワールド・ワイド・ウェブ(WWW)上で通信するためにクライエントおよび
サーバによって用いられる基礎プロトコルは、ハイパテキスト伝送プロトコル(
HTTP)である。HTTPはほぼFTPに取って代わったが、これは隔れたコ
ンピュータに対して必要なログオンと、ディレクトリをブラウズしかつ二方向フ
ァイル転送をするための能力とを特徴とする。HTTPは分散型で協調的なハイ
パーメディア情報システムのためのアプリケーション・レベルのプロトコルであ
る。これは、データ表示の種類分けと折衝とを特徴とする包括的かつオブジェク
ト指向のプロトコルであり、転送中のデータから独立してシステムを築くことを
可能にする。あるプラットホームから別のプラットホームへ移動可能なハイパテ
キスト文書を創るために用いられる単純なマークアップ言語は、ハイパテキスト
・マークアップ言語(HTML)である。HTMLファイルは埋込まれたコード
を有する簡単なASCIIテキストファイルであり、フォーマットおよびハイパ
テキスト・リンクを表示する。
ワールド・ワイド・ウェブ(WWW)はインターネットと同義になっている。
しかしながら、WWWは、欧州素粒子物理学研究所(CERN)のタイム・バー
ナーズーリーによる情報ネットワーク・プロジェクトとして始められた。WWW
は世界中の種々のコンピュータ上のリソースのハイパテキストおよびマルチメデ
ィア出版を可能にするソフトウェア、プロトコル、規約、および情報を指す。H
TMLはWWWにおける文書に用いられるフォーマット言語である。WWWはウ
ェブ・ブラウザを用いて「サーフィン」またはブラウズすることができ、これは
ウェブ・サーバから文書を検索し、HTMLコードに翻訳し、さらにユーザのた
めにその文書を表示する、ソフトウェアプログラムである。WWW上の文書はウ
ェブ・ページと称される。ウェブ・サーバはウェブ・ブラウザからの要求などの
HTTP要求に応答するのに必要なサーバのソフトウェアを装備したコンピュー
タである。
ウェブ・ページは典型的にはスタティック・ファイルとして構築および記憶さ
れ、要求に応じてウェブ・ブラウザに供される。この場合、ウェブ・ページの内
容は、ウェブ・ブラウザがいかなる動作をしても、その結果として変更されるこ
とはない。ウェブ・ブラウザからウェブ・サーバへ要求を送信してCGI(共通
ゲートウェイ・インターフェイス)スクリプトファイルを実行することもできる
。CGIスクリプトは、実行され必要な情報を提供されるとある機能を果たすカ
スタム・プログラムである。CGIスクリプトが現在どのように用いられている
かの一例は、CGIスクリプトにより、ユーザがウェブ・サーバに情報を伝達し
てウェブ・ページを構築することが可能になるという例である。別の例は、CG
Iスクリプトを用いて、ウェブ・ブラウザによるウェブ・ページへの訪問数を追
跡するためのカウンタを生成するというものである。CGIスクリプトは別個に
実行可能なファイルであり、ウェブ・サーバのソフトウェアの一部ではない。そ
れらはウェブ・サーバのソフトウェアとは異なるアドレス空間において別個のプ
ログラムとして実行する。
この発明のシステムは、特に、専用でない車両サービスコンソールシステムを
特徴とする一実施例に向けられる。このシステムは単一のコンピュータを用いて
、たとえばホイールアライナとエンジン分析器との組合せなどの1つ以上のサー
ビスシステムをホストすることを特徴とする。そのような組合されたシステムは
、技術的には、共通のPCを共有しながら2つの機能に対処するために独立した
プログラムおよび独立したサービスハードウェアのセットを必要とする。これら
のシステムを共存するように設計することは技術的には可能であるが、それらを
真に一体化することはできない。
この発明の下、アライナ・システムは、車両センサの集まりおよびウェブ・サ
ーバを含む。ウェブ・サーバは、たとえば顧客、車両タイプ、および車両の問題
の情報に関するデータを記憶するための領域を維持する。ウェブ・サーバはまた
、車両とアライメント手続を実行するための機器との両方に特有の、アライメン
ト手続専用の領域も維持する。
この発明のシステム(10)におけるアライメント手続は、図1に示すような
マイクロソフト社のActiveXTM技術などの互換可能な通信ツールのグループの下
で構築される。このアライメント手続はActiveXTMコンポーネントおよび制御を
用い、ActiveXTMのサーバ・ページに位置づけられる。好ましくは、センサは内

サーバページを実行しているウェブ・サーバは、たとえば車両センサがサーバ・
コンピュータに直接取付けられていない場合でさえ実行するであろう。
車両サービスシステムのための国際言語管理
この発明の別の局面は、この発明の車両機器システムにおいて用いられるテキ
スト形式のフレーズを管理するためのソフトウェアおよびマニュアル・メソッド
に向けられ、これは以下、図2に示すように国際言語管理(ILM)システム(
14)と呼ばれる。このソフトウェアはフレーズを抽出してフレーズのデータベ
ース(16)を築き、さまざまな言語の目的フレーズを編集して微細な修正がで
きる編集ページを提供し、目的リソースファイル(18)を生成して車両サービ
スシステムによって用いられるダイナミックライブラリへコンパイルし、システ

理サイクルを完了させるためのこの方法のステップは、マスタの英語フレーズフ
ァイルを識別するステップと、目的言語についての開発システムにおける副プロ
ジェクトを確立するステップと、目的リソースファイルをダイナミックライブラ
リへと築き上げるステップとを含む。車両サービスシステムはインデックスを造
り、そのリストをユーザに提示して要求に応じて選択させることにより、ダイナ
ミックライブラリを用いる。マスタフレーズファイルに対して変化が起こった
時の言語の同期化が容易になり、これによって目的言語フレーズは編集中に挿入
され、目的フレーズファイルおよびダイナミックライブラリが再生される。
ILMシステムソフトウェアは、32ビットWindowsTMソフトウェアに対する

用してフレーズを選択的に検査しかつ編集することを可能にするマイクロソフト

ーションにおいて実施され得る。このソフトウェアはMacintoshまたはUNIX

このソフトウェアは、限定はされないが、ISOラテン語IおよびISOラテ
ン語IIに基づくすべてのヨーロッパの単一バイト言語、キリル語、ギリシャ語
、ヘブライ語およびアラビア語、ならびに中国語、日本語、韓国語およびタイ語
を含む、車両サービスシステムに必要なさまざまな言語を復号化して表示するそ

ばUnicodeを処理することもできる。
この発明の利点は、ILMシステムがWindowsTMのローカライズされたバージ
ョンを必要とせずにさまざまな言語を表示する能力を含むことである。車両サー
ビスシステムにおけるフレーズの重複を確実になくすために必要な管理は最小と
なる。言語の同期化は、データベース生成および拡張、フレーズ・リソース生成

。
車両サービスシステム用32ビットソフトウェア
この発明の別の局面は、この発明の車両サービスシステムにおいて32ビット
ソフトウェアを実現することに関する。具体的には、この発明の好ましい実施例
は、マイクロソフト社の新規な32ビットWindowsTMアプリケーションを用いる
。
現在の車両サービス機器はDOSプラットホーム上で16ビットアプリケーシ
ョンとして実行されるように設計される。これらの16ビットアプリケーション
は、486またはPENTIUMなどの最新のCPUチップの32ビットアーキテクチ
ャ、ならびにWindows95TMおよびWindowsNTTMの32ビットアーキテクチャを利用

プログラムされる。これは、移動可能/実行可能(Portable Executable)形式の

ンパイラ)で生成される、実行可能なファイルの形式である。マイクロソフト・

この発明のシステムは、メモリ要求を減じる32ビットのダイナミック・リン
ク・ライブラリ(DLL)を用いる。これらのDLLにより複数のアプリケーシ
ョンが同じ手続を用いることが可能になる。WindowsNTTMオペレーティングシス
テムを実行する場合は、それはIntel、MIPC、Alpha、およびPowerPCのプ

この発明のシステムはマルチプロセスおよびマルチスレッドコードの形のマル
チタスク方式を用いる。プロセスは、プロセスに対して可視である私設仮想アド
レス空間、コード、データならびにファイル、パイプおよび同期化オブジェクト
などの他のオペレーティングシステムのリソースからなる実行アプリケーション
である。プロセスは、そのプロセスのコンテキストにおいて実行する1つ以上の
スレッドを含む。スレッドは、オペレーティングシステムがCPU時間をそこに

くなる。
この発明の車両サービスシステムの改良された32ビット性能の特徴により、
さまざまな同時プログラム動作および表示が達成され得る。その一例は、図5に
示すような、ライブ測定ゲージ読出(22)および調整ステップなどの手続命令
(24)の両方の同時表示である。従来の公知のシステムでは、オペレータは調
整命令を暗記しなければならず、または車両へのサービス中にそのような命令を
見るために測定読出モードから切換えなければならなかった。この発明の改良点
により、命令画面と測定画面とを組合せることにより両方を同時に見ることが可

32ビットソフトウェアのインストールおよびアンインストール
この発明の車両サービスシステムのインストールおよびアンインストールの特
徴ならびにファイル・インテグリティ検査能力を次に説明する。
WindowsNTTMおよびWindows95TMアプリケーションソフトウェアのインストール
は非常に複雑である。とりわけ、DLLなどのコンポーネントおよびActiveX制
御をオペレーティング・ディレクトリに登録する必要があるという点で複雑であ
る。複数のアプリケーションがDLLのようなリソースを共有する場合、レジス
トリは更新されて複数のリソースの用法を示すので、アプリケーションを削除す
るとき、リソースは除去しないようにしなければならない。アプリケーションが
用いるActiveXTM制御はレジストリに登録されなければならない。Windowsのコン
トロールパネルからのADD/REMOVEプログラムを用いてインストーラを起動するた
めの手段を提供しなければならない。ソフトウェアをインストールするとき、ユ
ーザ特権レベルを監視しなければならない。インストールプロセスは、以下に述
べるように、技術的に未熟な人でも車両サービスシステムソフトウェアをインス
トールできるように、簡単にされ得る。
この発明のシステムはソフトウェアを所望のコンピュータ環境にインストール
するためにインストーラ・ルーチンを用いる。このインストーラはユーザを自動
的にインストールプロセスにわたって導くグラフィカル・セットアップ・プログ
