BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Single focus contact lenses are well known in the art and are currently widely used. They are mainly used to correct refractive errors of the eye, such as myopia and hyperopia, with or without astigmatism. When properly worn, the periphery of the contact lens directly contacts the cornea and / or conjunctiva. Single focus contact lenses serve to form the refractive surface of the eye. Today, contact lenses are divided into two broad categories: soft lenses (eg, hydrogels, silicone rubbers, etc.), and hard lenses, ie, rigid gas permeable (RGP) or PMMA. Prior art conventional single focus contact lenses, as shown in FIG. 1 to which reference is now made, comprise an optical zone 1 that is lifted over the eye, a peripheral zone 3 that directly contacts the eye surface 2, and a raised edge. It has a part 4. A conventional single focus contact lens, such as a single focus contact lens 1, is worn over the eye, and tear fluid, usually on the surface of the eye, is retained between the corneal 2 contact lenses. However, the current design of single focus contact lenses leaves significant disadvantages as conventional single focus contact lenses interfere with normal eye metabolism and adversely affect the wearer's corneal health and comfort. . The inhibition of normal eye metabolism by conventional single focus contact lenses is mainly caused by reduced oxygen supply and reduced tear flow and replacement of conventional single focus contact lenses. The rate of turnover of the thin film of tears is greatly reduced. In addition, tear flow flushes ocular effluents such as metabolic reactions and exfoliated epithelial cell effluents from various contaminants. Insufficient tear flow in contact lenses is likely to cause medical problems such as corneal damage, edema and conjunctivitis, as well as significant discomfort to the user. These problems are caused by the long-lasting effluent and oxygen deficiency such as hypoxia. These problems apply to all types of single focus contact lenses, regardless of the materials used in their manufacture. There are many potential contact lens users who refrain from wearing contact lenses because the lenses are not healthy and not comfortable enough. In addition, those who choose to wear single focus contact lenses experience prolonged accommodation due to lack of comfort. The lack of comfort of conventional single focus contact lenses due to obstruction of the eye's metabolism is a major obstacle for single focus contact lens wearers, especially hard single focus contact lens wearers. Diffraction gratings have been used to provide the optical power of conventional multifocal contact lenses. Conventional multifocal contact lenses are described, for example, in U.S. Patent Nos. 4,881,804, 4,881,805, 4,995,715, and 5,044,742. The prior art multifocal contact lens 20 as shown in FIGS. 1B-1D has a multifocal optical zone 22 and a peripheral zone 24. The optical zone 22 is diffractive, ie, has a diffraction grating pattern 25, and is multifocal (eg, bifocal). The diffractive power of the optical zone 22 gives the multifocal contact lens 20 visual acuity correction characteristics. Multifocal contact lens 20 also has a relatively smooth front surface 28 and contact lens edge 26. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is a primary object of the present invention to overcome the disadvantages associated with prior art single focus contact lenses and to provide sufficient tear flow and thereby tear replacement to reduce disturbing normal eye metabolism. To provide an improved single focus contact lens. The inventor has stated that a single focus contact lens having a three-dimensional pattern on at least a portion of the back surface provides a single focus contact lens that is advantageous in health and comfort over prior art multifocal contact lenses. I knew that. The present invention, according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, comprises a front surface and a rear surface having an optical zone provided substantially in the center of the contact lens to provide single focus optical properties and a peripheral zone surrounding said optical zone. Provide a single focus contact lens with The peripheral zone includes a three-dimensional pattern provided on a back surface of the contact lens, and the three-dimensional pattern has a portion that does not contact an eye surface. According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, there is an anterior surface and a posterior surface, wherein the posterior surface is substantially at the center of the contact lens and provides an optical zone for providing single focus optical properties, and surrounds the optical zone. It has a first peripheral zone and a second peripheral zone surrounding the first zone. The first peripheral zone has a three-dimensional pattern provided on the back surface of the contact lens. This three-dimensional pattern has a portion that does not contact the surface of the eye. Further, according to another preferred embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a single focus contact lens having a front surface and a rear surface, wherein the contact lens has a three-dimensional pattern on the rear surface. The three-dimensional pattern has portions that do not contact the surface of the eye, and the three-dimensional pattern provides substantially single focus optical properties. Further, in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the three-dimensional pattern is rounded and smooth, sinusoidal, cosine, or a combination thereof. Further, according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the three-dimensional pattern is concentric or radial. According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a method of manufacturing a single focus contact lens having a front surface and a back surface. The method includes the steps of forming an optical zone having a single focus optical characteristic substantially at the center of the contact lens, and forming a peripheral zone surrounding the optical zone. The peripheral zone has a three-dimensional pattern provided on the back surface of the contact lens, and the three-dimensional pattern has a portion that does not contact the surface of the eye. Further, in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, forming a rear surface having an anterior surface and an optical zone provided substantially at the center of the contact lens to provide single focus optical properties; A method for manufacturing a single focus contact lens, comprising: forming one peripheral zone; and forming a second peripheral zone surrounding the first zone. The first peripheral zone has a three-dimensional pattern provided on the rear surface of the contact lens, and the three-dimensional pattern has a portion that does not contact the eye. Still further, in accordance with another preferred embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a method of manufacturing a single focus contact lens having a front surface and a rear surface, the method including forming a three-dimensional pattern on the rear surface of the contact lens. . The three-dimensional pattern has portions that do not contact the surface of the eye, and the three-dimensional pattern substantially provides other optical properties. Further, in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the method includes the step of selectively forming a rounded smooth three-dimensional pattern that is a sine waveform, a cosine waveform, or a combination thereof. Finally, according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the method includes the step of forming a concentric or radial three-dimensional pattern. FIG. 5A is a front view of a single focus contact lens constructed and used according to another preferred embodiment of the present invention. FIG. 5B is a cross-sectional view of a single focus contact lens constructed and used according to another preferred embodiment of the present invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION A preferred embodiment of the single focus contact lens of the present invention is shown in FIGS. 2A-2C. The single focus contact lens 10 has an optical zone 30 and a peripheral zone 32 surrounding it. Further, contact lens 10 has an edge 36 and a smooth front surface 34. The optical zone 30 is formed with monofocal refractive optical properties, and is therefore substantially constant in curvature (uniform) and smooth. The peripheral zone 32 has a smoothly rounded three-dimensional pattern 35 provided on the rear surface. The smoothly rounded three-dimensional pattern 35 reduces contact with the surface of the eye 31 (cornea and / or conjunctiva) and minimizes obstruction to eye metabolism by increasing tear flow and replacement. A smooth three-dimensional pattern 35 is engraved on the back surface of the single focus contact lens 10 or deposited, machined or molded using techniques well known in the art. This can be a sine wave, a cosine wave or any other desired shape. It is important to emphasize that the optical refractive power of the optical lens 10 remains unchanged despite the smooth three-dimensional pattern being provided in the peripheral zone on the rear surface of the lens. Thus, the single focus contact lens 10 has a substantially single power optical zone 30, which remains single focus. The smooth three-dimensional pattern formed in the peripheral zone 32 lifts a portion of the contact lens 10 from the surface of the eye 31 and creates a space 37 between the lens and the surface of the eye for better tear flow and replacement. Designed to form. Lifting of a portion of the contact lens 10 improves the flow of tears between the contact lens and the cornea (ie, increases tear replacement), thus creating a healthier and more comfortable single focus contact lens. Can be. A more comfortable single focus contact lens simplifies the wearing procedure, reduces pain and reduces wearing time for both the patient and the practitioner. As noted above, the increased tear flow allows for increased oxygen flow and a consequent reduction in contact lens 10 interference with normal eye metabolism, thereby reducing discomfort for contact lens wearers. Decrease. The peripheral zone 32 of the smooth three-dimensional pattern is suitable for all types of single focus contact lenses, including hard (RGP or PMMA) and soft single focus contact lenses. The peripheral zone 32 having a smooth three-dimensional pattern partially contacts the cornea and is partially lifted in the direction of the edge 36. Another preferred embodiment of the present invention is shown in FIGS. 3A-3C. The single focus contact lens 50 has a single focus optical zone 40, an intermediate peripheral zone 42 around the optical zone 40, and an outer peripheral zone 44 provided around the outer periphery of the single focus contact lens 50. The single focus contact lens 50 also has an edge 46 and a smooth front surface 48. As in the case of the contact lens 10 (FIGS. 2A-2C), the optical zone 40 is designed to have a single focal power characteristic. The intermediate peripheral zone 42 has a smoothly rounded three-dimensional pattern 45 implemented on its rear surface. The peripheral zone 42 has a smoothly rounded three-dimensional pattern 45 formed on its rear surface. As in the case of the peripheral zone 32 (FIGS. 2A-2C), the design of the smoothly rounded three-dimensional pattern 45 increases tear flow and translocation, thereby increasing oxygenation to the cornea and thus contact. Reduces interference with normal eye metabolism by the lens. The intermediate peripheral zone 42 has no optical effect. Using techniques known in the art, a smoothly rounded three-dimensional pattern is engraved, machined, deposited, or shaped on the rear surface of intermediate peripheral zone 42. The outer peripheral zone 44 is positioned next to and surrounds the intermediate peripheral zone 42. As with the contact lens 10, the optical power of the contact lens 50 remains unchanged, even though the smoothly rounded three-dimensional pattern is located in the intermediate peripheral zone on the rear surface of the lens, thus maintaining the single focus of the lens. You. Another preferred embodiment of the present invention is shown in FIGS. 4A-4C. The single focus contact lens 60 has a smoothly rounded three-dimensional pattern provided on the rear surface of the contact lens 60. The three-dimensional pattern provided on the rear surface of the contact lens 60 does not affect the optical refractive power of the lens. The contact lens 60 is designed to have substantially unifocal optical properties despite the arrangement of the smoothly rounded three-dimensional pattern. While unifocal contact lenses are virtually unifocal, the smooth three-dimensional pattern on the back surface increases tear flow and consequent tear replacement, and reduces interference of the contact lens with normal eye metabolism. Increases the comfort of the wearer. Although the invention has been described with respect to a limited number of embodiments, it should be recognized that many modifications, variations and other applications of the invention are all within the scope of the invention. For example, the three-dimensional patterns of the single focus lens of FIGS. 2A-3C and the substantially single focus contact lens of FIGS. 4A-4C are concentric, but the three-dimensional pattern is now referred to in FIGS. As shown in FIG. 5B, it may be radial. The embodiment of FIGS. 5A and 5B is shown generally at 70 and has a central optical zone 72 similar to optical zones 30 (FIG. 2A) and 40 (FIG. 3A), and an optical zone 72 of a single focus contact lens 76. And a smoothly rounded three-dimensional pattern 74 extending radially from the end of the to the edge 76. 5A and 5B are a front view and a cross-sectional view of the single focus contact lens 70, it will be appreciated that the 3D of the smoothly rounded pattern is not shown in the drawing. Although the invention has been described with respect to a smoothly rounded three-dimensional pattern, other embodiments are intended to include any form of three-dimensional pattern. It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the present invention is not limited by what has been particularly disclosed and described herein. The scope of the invention is rather defined by the following claims.
