Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of a gel-type electrolyte battery, that can improve impregnation of a gel-type electrolyte into an electrode-active- material layer of an electrode raw-plate. SOLUTION: A gel-type electrolyte layer is made by applying a gel-type electrolyte onto an electrode raw-plate 23, which is formed by making an electrode-active material layer on an electrode-current collector body. In this case, temperatures at individual portions in a booth 29, as environmental temperatures in the surroundings of the application part where the gel-type electrolyte is applied, are controlled within the range where the gel-type electrolyte is maintained in a liquid condition, desirably to be set within the range from 40 deg.C to 100 deg.C, and the gel-type electrolyte is applied onto the electrode raw-plate 23 by an application head 24.

2. Description of the Related Art In recent years, batteries have become important as power sources for portable electronic devices. In particular, a secondary battery is used as a power source for driving a portable electronic device or the like from the viewpoint of economy and resource saving, and its use is rapidly expanding in recent years. Portable electronic devices are required to be small and lightweight, and batteries are required to have a small storage space in the device and to be lightweight so as not to increase the weight of the electronic device as much as possible. I have. In addition, long-term use is also required. That is, as portable electronic devices have become smaller and more sophisticated, batteries used for them have been required to be smaller, lighter and have higher capacities.

As a battery that meets such demands, a non-aqueous lithium-ion secondary battery having a higher energy density and a higher output density than a lead battery and a nickel cadmium battery has attracted attention. Non-aqueous lithium ion secondary batteries are electrochemically-charged in that lithium in the positive electrode is occluded in the negative electrode through the electrolyte during charging, and lithium in the negative electrode is occluded in the positive electrode through the electrolyte during discharging. It is a battery utilizing a reversible reaction. As the electrolyte, a non-aqueous solvent in which a lithium salt is dissolved is used.

However, the use of a metal hard cell has a problem that it is not possible to sufficiently meet the recent demand for a smaller and lighter secondary battery and a thinner battery. In addition, with the further miniaturization of electronic devices, it is required to increase the degree of freedom in the shape of secondary batteries. Can not fully meet the demands. For example, it is very difficult to produce a thin, large-area sheet-type battery, a thin, small-area card-type battery, or a battery that is flexible and has a higher degree of freedom in shape.

As a countermeasure against such a problem, it has been studied to manufacture a battery using a completely solid inorganic or organic solid electrolyte or a semi-solid electrolyte made of a polymer gel. Specifically, a polymer solid electrolyte composed of a polymer and an electrolyte,
A solid electrolyte battery using a gel electrolyte obtained by adding a non-aqueous electrolyte as a plasticizer to a polymer matrix, or a non-aqueous gel electrolyte battery (also called a polymer lithium battery or simply a polymer battery or a gel battery) Has been proposed.

However, in the case of a gel electrolyte battery, since the electrolyte is held in the gel matrix, the electrolyte may penetrate into the active material layer of the electrode when forming the gel electrolyte layer. There is a problem that it is not performed sufficiently. For this reason, there has been a problem that lithium ions cannot move sufficiently between the two electrodes, and as a result, the expected battery capacity cannot be realized.

[0010] According to this method for manufacturing a gel electrolyte battery, by controlling the environmental temperature around the application portion to which the gel electrolyte is applied within a range in which the gel electrolyte can be maintained in a liquid state, The solidification of the gel electrolyte applied to the substrate is avoided. This makes it easier for the gel electrolyte to permeate the electrode active material layer of the source electrode.

This gel electrolyte is jelly-like and inferior in fluidity at room temperature. Therefore, it is generally applied to an electrode current collector in a liquid state by applying a temperature. Further, in order to improve the penetration of the gel electrolyte, a solvent having a lower boiling point than the electrolyte can be added as a diluent. Also,
At this time, the temperature range of the gel electrolyte or the diluted gel is, of course, a temperature equal to or higher than the temperature at which they become liquid and lower than that of the solvent having the lowest boiling point among the solvents contained therein.

The structure of the battery is such that a positive electrode and a negative electrode obtained by applying a liquid gel electrolyte are bonded so that their active material layers face each other, or the physical properties of both active material layers are combined. In order to avoid excessive contact, a separator may be interposed between the two. As the separator, a microporous film made of polyethylene or polypropylene used in a conventional liquid lithium secondary battery can be employed.

By performing such a temperature control, the gel electrolyte applied to the electrode substrate 23 by the coating head 24 reaches the entrance 25A of the dryer 25 without cooling and hardening. The gel electrolyte held in the electrode raw material layer of the electrode raw material 23 can be smoothly permeated. As a result, the gel electrolyte is sufficiently impregnated,
The desired characteristics can be realized by increasing the battery capacity.

As can be seen from Table 1, when the temperature in the booth (environmental temperature) is low, the gel electrolyte does not penetrate to the electrode active material layer inside the coating film of the electrode raw material. Battery characteristics (capacity) are not sufficiently exhibited.
When the temperature inside the booth was set as high as 120 ° C., the permeation of the gel electrolyte was confirmed, but the characteristics of the battery were not sufficiently exhibited. The reason for this is that once the solvent constituting the electrolyte solution is added to the gel which has been completely dried, the gel does not return completely, and only the gel around the active material is excessively dried, or LiPF 6 which is merely an electrolyte is used.
Is considered to have been decomposed by the heat of.

However, even if the battery characteristics are not sufficiently exhibited for any reason, there are optimum conditions for the environmental temperature (such as the temperature in the booth) when applying the gel electrolyte.

In the present invention, the area from the feed of the electrode material to the entrance of the dryer is surrounded by a booth.
Needless to say, a booth is not required if the temperatures of the electrode raw material and the temperature of the gel electrolyte, such as the electrode raw material, the guide roll, the coating head, and the backup roll, can be controlled substantially constant.
