Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the operability with regard to calibration of a printer in an imaging system where one reader is connected with a plurality of printers. SOLUTION: When a test pattern for calibration is outputted from a printer to be calibrated, an identification code for specifying an outputted printer is printed onto a sheet in addition to the test pattern. When the test pattern is read out, the identification code is read out together in order to determine a printer printed out the test pattern thus readily specifying a printer for setting calibration data generated based on the read out data.

2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, it is known that calibration of an image output device is performed at a predetermined timing such as when an image output device such as a printer is started, or based on an instruction from a user or the like. This calibration generally records a specific pattern such as a gradation pattern on a recording material such as paper, reads the gradation pattern with an image reading device such as a scanner, and performs γ correction and the like based on the read information.
This is performed by creating or updating the image processing parameters of the image data used in the image output device, whereby it is possible to maintain good image output characteristics such as tint and density gradation in the image output device. .

That is, when reading a gradation pattern output from an image output device by an image reading device, it is not determined which image output device is the gradation pattern output. For this reason, conventionally, it is necessary for a user or an operator to input information on an image output device that has output the gradation pattern on a host computer or the like, thereby reflecting the calibration result on the image data of the image output device. there were. As a result, an image forming system configured by connecting a plurality of image output apparatuses to one image reading apparatus may be inconvenient in terms of calibration. Alternatively, conventionally, when an image forming system is configured by using a plurality of image output apparatuses, it is necessary to individually cope with each image forming apparatus by preparing a scanner for each image forming apparatus. .

Further, a system in which a plurality of image output devices each having a scanner, such as a copying machine, are connected, and an image read by a scanner of one copying machine is transmitted to and output from a plurality of other copying machines (hereinafter, referred to as a system). The calibration is performed for each copying machine. Therefore, it takes time and effort to perform the calibration individually, and as described above, when an image read by one copying machine is sent to another copying machine and recorded, gradation is required for each calibration. Since the scanner that reads the pattern is different, the above-described recording may cause a problem such as a slight change in color for each copying machine. Also, even in the case of a system intended for cascade, all copiers need scanners only for calibration,
It is also a factor of cost increase.

The luminance signal obtained by the CCD 105 of the reader A is converted into a frame-sequential image signal by the reader image processing unit 108 as described above. This image signal has a gamma characteristic of the printer at the time of initial setting and a gamma correction circuit (see FIG. 2).
Is an image signal taken into account. The gradation of the original image represented by this image signal and the printer (B1, B2, B
3, B4 and B5), the LU of each printer is set such that the density of the actually output image matches.
At T25, the density characteristics are converted. The image signal thus obtained is modulated by a pulse width modulation circuit 26 into pulse width data, which is a laser drive signal corresponding to the density value indicated by the image signal.
Is driven by the laser. As a result, dots having an area corresponding to the pulse width are formed on the photosensitive drum. In the present embodiment, a tone reproduction method by pulse width modulation processing is used for all colors of Y, M, C, and K. Then, the latent image having a predetermined gradation characteristic is formed on the photosensitive drum 4 by the change of the dot area by the scanning of the laser 110, and the gradation image is reproduced through the processes of development, transfer and fixing. .

FIG. 13 is a diagram showing the relationship between the relative drum surface potential, that is, the contrast potential, and the image density of the test pattern 62 obtained by the above calculation. The figure shows the print of the test pattern for this reading,
A setting setting the contrast potential is shown in figure A, shows that to obtain the maximum concentration D A in the reading of the test pattern 62 by this setting. That is, when data indicating the maximum image density is input to the printer, the relative drum surface potential generated on the photosensitive drum by the laser light when the laser is driven at the maximum level in response to the data becomes the value indicated by A. indicates that thereby obtaining the maximum density D a. In the present embodiment, as described below, a desired maximum density may not be obtained due to a change in toner density or the like, and the maximum density is corrected by calibration.

That is, in the relationship shown in FIG. 13, in the density range where the maximum density is obtained, the image density with respect to the contrast potential almost corresponds linearly as shown by the solid line L. However, in the two-component developing system, the toner density and the like in the developing device fluctuate, and as shown by a broken line N in the figure, the image density is reduced as a whole in the density range where the maximum density is obtained, and the non-linear characteristic is exhibited. Often. For this reason,
As the first calibration of the present embodiment, the contrast potential is adjusted so that a final maximum density target value can be obtained. Specifically, when the target maximum image density is set to 1.6, a margin of 0.1 is set and 1.7 is set.

In the electrophotographic method used in the present embodiment, the contrast potential actually depends on the environmental conditions as shown in FIG. 14, so that the image density changes according to the environmental conditions. For this reason, in the present embodiment, the contrast potential B in the above equation is calculated using a value obtained by correcting the contrast potential A in the above equation according to the output of the environment sensor 33 that monitors the water content in the apparatus.

The relationship shown in this figure can be obtained as follows. The surface potential V L when the scanning is performed with the level of the laser beam being the lowest and the surface potential V H when the level of the laser beam is the highest is measured by the surface potential sensor 12 when the grid potential is set to −200 V. . Similarly, to measure the respective potential V L and V H when the grid potential is -400 V. And -20
By interpolating and extrapolating the data of 0 V and the data of -400 V, the relationship between the grid potential and the surface potential of the photosensitive drum as shown in FIG. 15 can be obtained. Note that the control for obtaining the potential data is referred to as potential measurement control.

As shown in FIG. 17, the pattern image printed by the test print 2 is Y, M,
For each of the colors C and K, a total of 4 columns × 16 rows are made up of patches of 64 gradations, and these patch groups form a predetermined gradation from the maximum density to the minimum density. The patches having the 64 gradation values are arranged at smaller gradation intervals in a region having a smaller gradation value (lower density) among the 256 gradations. It is arranged in. That is, in the present embodiment, since the laser-based electrophotographic method is employed, the level of the laser output is set at intervals according to the above-mentioned density region, and each patch is printed out. This makes it possible to satisfactorily adjust the gradation characteristics particularly in the highlight portion of the image by the calibration.

Next, a printing operation based on the above configuration will be described. The photosensitive drums 4Y, 4M, 4C, and 4K are uniformly negatively charged by the primary chargers 8Y, 8M, 8C, and 8K, respectively, and then scanned by a laser beam on the photosensitive drum by a laser device serving as image exposure means. As a result, an electrostatic latent image corresponding to the color-separated image exposure pattern is formed. Then, as the respective photosensitive drums further rotate, development is performed with yellow, magenta, cyan, and black toners.

This visible image is transferred to the transfer chargers 15Y and 15Y.
The images are sequentially transferred onto the transfer material gripped by the transfer material gripping belt 25 by M, 15C, and 15K, and a full-color image is formed on the transfer material. When the image formation is completed, the transfer material is separated from the transfer material gripping belt 25 and sent to the fixing device 7, where it is collectively fixed to obtain a desired full-color image. Then, the transfer material is discharged to a discharge tray (not shown). After the transfer of the photosensitive drum in the image forming unit for each color, the residual toner is removed by the cleaners 9Y, 9M, 9C, and 9K, and the residual surface potential of the photosensitive drum is negatively charged by the pre-exposure. In preparation for the subsequent latent image formation.

In the above-described embodiment, as in the first embodiment, the identification is determined by the reader, which is a reader. However, the operator performs the test printing based on the identification code printed together with the test pattern in the test print. Alternatively, the identification information may be input when the test pattern is read. In this case, unlike the above-described embodiment in which everything from the printing of the identification information to the determination of the printer to be calibrated is performed automatically, the labor of the operator increases, but the printer is reliably identified along with the reading operation. It can be performed.
