Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain a large battery capacity even after charge/discharge are repeated at high temperatures, by performing charge/discharge while causing a specific amount of lithium ions to remain in a positive-electrode active material out of those reversibly moving between the positive-electrode active material and a negative-electrode active material. SOLUTION: The amount of lithium ions emitted from a positive-electrode active material or a lithium-manganese composite oxide is regulated at the upper limit temperature within a battery use temperature range. That is, the upper limit temperature is previously set up within the battery use temperature range, and a voltage and capacity of a battery are found with 95% lithium ions stored in a negative-electrode active material out of the amount of lithium ions reversibly movable at the upper limit temperature. Next, a voltage of the battery at the time it has the same capacity as the found capacity, is found over the whole range of the battery use temperatures. In charging, by charging the battery only to a voltage corresponding to the temperature at the time of charging, the amount of lithium ions moving between the positive- electrode active material and the negative-electrode active material can be kept at 95% of, or less than, the amount of lithium ions reversibly movable at the upper limit temperature.

At present, positive electrode active materials for lithium secondary batteries include:
LiCoO 2 and LiNiO 2 having a layered rock salt structure are used as a battery capable of constructing a 4V class battery. LiCoO 2 is mainly used because it is particularly easy to synthesize and handle. However, cobalt and nickel contained therein are scarce in resources and expensive. Therefore, these LiCo batteries are used in EV and HEV secondary batteries that require a large amount of positive electrode active material in order to increase the discharge capacity.
When O 2 or LiNiO 2 is used, the cost of the battery itself becomes very large.

Means for Solving the Problems The present inventors have found that in the case of a lithium secondary battery using a lithium manganese composite oxide having a spinel structure as a positive electrode active material, the amount of lithium ions released from the positive electrode active material during charging is too large. In this case, attention was paid to the fact that the crystal structure of the lithium manganese composite oxide became unstable and the charge / discharge capacity was reduced. The inventor of the present invention performed lithium-manganese composite oxidation by performing charging and discharging while leaving a predetermined amount of lithium ions reversibly moving between the positive electrode active material and the negative electrode active material in the positive electrode active material. The inventors have conceived that the crystal structure of the product can be prevented from becoming unstable, and have reached the following invention.

[0010] Since the lithium secondary battery uses an organic solvent as a solvent for the electrolytic solution, the electric conductivity of the electrolytic solution increases as the temperature rises, and the amount of lithium ions moving in the electrolytic solution increases. I do. In addition, at the interface between the active material and the electrolyte, the reaction resistance with respect to the entrance and exit of lithium ions also decreases. Therefore, when charged at a high temperature, a larger amount of lithium is ionized and released from the lithium manganese composite oxide, which is a positive electrode active material, than when charged at a low temperature, and the crystal structure of the lithium manganese composite oxide is changed. It becomes unstable.

The present invention regulates the amount of lithium ions released from a lithium manganese composite oxide as a positive electrode active material at the upper limit temperature of the temperature range in which a secondary battery is used, and reversibly moves if there is no regulation. At least 5% of the possible ion amount is left in the positive electrode active material, and charging / discharging is performed at any temperature within the operating temperature range and within the above-mentioned lithium ion amount regulated at the upper limit temperature. . By using this means, the crystal structure of the spinel-structured lithium manganese composite oxide, which is a positive electrode active material, is stabilized, and cycle durability is maintained, especially when used at high temperatures.
Deterioration of the capacity of the secondary battery due to repeated charging and discharging is suppressed.

The amount of lithium ions moving between the positive electrode active material and the negative electrode active material by charging and discharging can be controlled by the final voltage during charging. Lithium secondary batteries are
The range of operating battery voltage is determined by the combination of the positive electrode active material and the negative electrode active material. When a spinel-structured lithium manganese composite oxide is used as the positive electrode active material and a carbon material such as graphite is used as the negative electrode active material, the voltage range is 3.0 to 4.2 V. In a lithium secondary battery, since the battery voltage depends on the state of charge (SOC) of the battery, when charging is performed to a final voltage of 4.2 V, the total amount of lithium ions that can be reversibly moved is released from the positive electrode active material. It will be occluded in the negative electrode active material.

The upper limit temperature of the temperature range in which the battery is used is set in advance. At the upper limit temperature, the battery voltage in a state where 95% of the amount of reversibly movable lithium ions is occluded in the negative electrode active material is determined. Find the capacity. Next, the battery voltage when the battery has the same capacity as this capacity is obtained over the entire temperature range where the battery is used. Then, at the time of charging, if charging is performed only up to the battery voltage corresponding to the temperature at the time of charging, regardless of the temperature used, the gap between the positive electrode active material and the negative electrode active material is maintained. The amount of lithium ions that can move can be 95% or less of the amount of lithium ions that can move reversibly at the upper limit temperature.

The operating temperature range of the battery varies depending on the purpose of use of the battery and the like. However, when the battery is used as a power source for EVs and HEVs, the temperature range must be relatively wide.
The upper limit temperature is desirably set to 50 to 65 ° C. Therefore, in the case of a secondary battery for EV and HEV, 50 to 50
Based on the amount of lithium ions that can reversibly move between the positive electrode active material and the negative electrode active material at 65 ° C., it is desirable to control the charge and discharge of the battery so that 95% or less of the amount of lithium ions moves.

The positive electrode is prepared by mixing a conductive material and a binder with a positive electrode active material, adding an appropriate solvent as needed, and forming a paste-like positive electrode mixture on the surface of a metal foil current collector. It is formed by drying and then increasing the density of the positive electrode mixture by pressing. The positive electrode active material used in the lithium ion secondary battery used in the present embodiment is a spinel-structured lithium manganese composite oxide. This lithium-manganese composite oxide is obtained by mixing a raw material such as electrolytic manganese dioxide and manganese carbonate with a raw material such as lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide, and forming a mixture of 700-700 in air or oxygen.
It is easily synthesized by firing at a temperature of 900 ° C.

The lithium manganese composite oxide has a composition formula L
The composition ratio of lithium and manganese represented by iMn 2 O 4 is 1:
2 can be used. However, the composition formula Li 1 + x M in which manganese is partially replaced by lithium
Since the crystal structure represented by n 2-x O 4 has a relatively stable crystal structure even by charge and discharge, it is used to improve the cycle durability in combination with the effects of the present invention. Is good. In addition, since the substitution amount x is too large, Mn 3+ decreases to maintain electrical neutrality and the battery capacity decreases too much, so that 0 <x ≦ 0.2 is preferable, and more preferably, It is preferable that 0.02 ≦ x ≦ 0.15. The partial substitution element of manganese is not limited to lithium, but may be Mg, B, Al, Ga, P, Ti, V, Cr,
Substitution can also be performed with one or more elements of Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and the like, or with lithium and these elements.

Since the lithium manganese composite oxide itself has a large electric specific resistance, it is necessary to add a conductive material. Therefore, the conductive material used for the positive electrode is to ensure the electrical conductivity of the positive electrode active material layer, and one or two or more of carbon material powders such as carbon black, acetylene black, and graphite are used. Can be used in combination. The binder plays a role of binding the active material particles, and may be a fluororesin such as polytetrafluoroethylene, polyvinylidene fluoride, or fluororubber, or a thermoplastic resin such as polypropylene or polyethylene. The mixing ratio of the positive electrode mixture was 80 to 94 parts by weight of the positive electrode active material, 3 to 15 parts by weight of the conductive material, and 3 parts by weight of the binder.
It is preferable to set the range to 15 parts by weight. As a solvent for dispersing the active material, the conductive material, and the binder, N
Organic solvents such as -methyl-2-pyrrolidone can be used.

The positive electrode mixture is applied to the surface of a current collector made of a metal foil, and compression-formed to form a sheet-shaped positive electrode.
An aluminum foil or the like can be used for the positive electrode current collector. The thickness of the positive electrode mixture layer formed on the positive electrode current collector surface is:
It is desirable that the thickness be 100 μm or less, and the electrical resistivity of the positive electrode mixture layer be 30 Ωcm or less. If the thickness or the electrical resistivity of the positive electrode mixture layer is too large, the internal resistance of the battery becomes too large when the battery is formed, and the load characteristics deteriorate.

As the negative electrode, metallic lithium, a lithium compound, a lithium alloy or the like can be used. However, since there is a problem that dendrite is deposited due to repetition of charge and discharge, a carbon material, an oxide, a nitride or the like is used instead. Is preferably used as the negative electrode active material. When a carbon material or the like is used as the negative electrode active material, the negative electrode is made of a metal foil, as in the case of the positive electrode, in which a binder is mixed with the carbon material, and an appropriate solvent is added as necessary to form a paste-like negative electrode mixture. Of the negative electrode mixture by pressing and drying, and then pressing to increase the density of the negative electrode mixture. As the carbon material, natural graphite, spherical or fibrous artificial graphite, hard carbon, a fired organic compound such as phenol resin, or a powdered material such as coke can be used. Further, two or more kinds of carbon materials or a mixture of a carbon material and an oxide may be used.

The separator sandwiched between the positive electrode and the negative electrode separates the positive electrode from the negative electrode and holds the electrolyte, and a thin microporous film of polyethylene, polypropylene or the like can be used. The non-aqueous electrolyte is a solution in which a lithium salt as an electrolyte is dissolved in an organic solvent. As the organic solvent, an aprotic organic solvent, for example, ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, dimethyl carbonate, diethyl carbonate, ethyl methyl carbonate, γ-butyrolactone, acetonitrile, 1,2-dimethoxyethane, tetrahydrofuran, dioxolan,
One kind of methylene chloride or a mixture of two or more kinds thereof can be used. The electrolyte to be dissolved is LiI, LiClO 4 , LiAsF 6 , LiBF 4 ,
Lithium salts such as LiPF 6 and LiN (CF 3 SO 2 ) 2 can be used.

The amount of water in the non-aqueous electrolyte is 100 pp.
m and the amount of free acid (HF) is preferably 200 ppm or less. This is because moisture and free acid promote deterioration of the spinel-structured lithium manganese composite oxide, that is, elution of manganese into the organic electrolyte at a high temperature. For this reason, it is preferable that the positive electrode, the negative electrode, the separator, and the like are sufficiently dried.

<Structure of Secondary Battery> In the secondary battery used in the present embodiment, the positive electrode and the negative electrode are arranged to face each other with the separator interposed therebetween. Although it depends on the application, the electrode body is formed by winding the electrode in a roll shape or superimposing the electrodes in multiple layers so that the electrode can be inserted into a battery can made of metal or the like having a cylindrical or rectangular shape. Then, the electrode body is mounted on the battery can, the electrode and the separator are impregnated with the non-aqueous electrolyte, and the battery can is sealed to complete the battery.

It is desirable that the secondary battery used in the present embodiment is configured so as to obtain a battery capacity regulated by the positive electrode. The battery capacity of the positive electrode regulation means that the discharge capacity of the battery is determined based on the amount of the positive electrode active material. This is because the present invention controls the amount of lithium ions released from the positive electrode active material, thereby preventing the crystal structure of the spinel-structured lithium manganese composite oxide as the positive electrode active material from becoming unstable. Because it is a feature.

At the time of assembling the battery, the amount of lithium ions that can be stored in the negative electrode active material facing through the separator is larger per unit area than the amount of lithium ions that can be released from the positive electrode active material. Thereby, a battery capacity regulated by the positive electrode can be obtained. That is, the lithium accommodation capacity on the negative electrode side is set to be large. Since the capacity of lithium ions in the positive electrode and the negative electrode is determined by the basis weight of the positive and negative electrode mixture layers per unit area, when forming the positive and negative electrode mixture layers, the capacity of the positive electrode regulated battery is obtained. It is preferable to determine the basis weight as described above.

If lithium ions which cannot be completely absorbed exist in the negative electrode active material, there is a risk of short-circuit between the positive and negative electrodes due to generation of lithium dendrite, a change in potential balance accompanying a charge / discharge cycle, and the like. In order to prevent this phenomenon, it is preferable that the battery capacity is regulated by the positive electrode. The positive electrode and the negative electrode are preferably arranged so that the negative electrode always exists on the surface where the positive electrode faces through the separator. For example, when a roll-shaped electrode body is formed, it is preferable to make the width and length of the negative electrode larger than those of the positive electrode.

When a carbon material is used as the negative electrode active material, an initial irreversible reaction due to formation of an organic film on the surface of the negative electrode active material is completed for the completed battery mounted on the battery can, and It is desirable to perform an operation to make the charge / discharge efficiency close to 100%. This operation is called conditioning. The amount of the initial irreversible reaction is proportional to the surface area of the negative electrode active material, that is, the amount of the negative electrode active material. The greater the basis weight of the negative electrode with respect to the positive electrode, the greater the amount of the irreversible reaction, and the more time is required to complete the reaction. For this reason, the ratio of the amount of lithium ions that can be occluded to the negative electrode active material opposed via the separator to the amount of lithium ions that can be released from the positive electrode active material should be in the range of 1 to 2 per unit area. More preferably, it is more preferably in the range of 1.2 or more and 1.8 or less.

Conditioning is performed by attaching a battery to a charging / discharging device and repeating charging and discharging several times. At this time, gas may be generated due to decomposition of the organic electrolytic solution or the like, and gas may be vented before closing the battery can. Also, to shorten the conditioning time,
Conditioning can be performed by heating the battery to promote the reaction.

As described above, it is desirable that the lithium ion secondary battery used in the present embodiment is configured so as to obtain a discharge capacity regulated by the positive electrode. Further, it is preferable to use a battery in which the initial irreversible reaction is completed and the charge / discharge efficiency becomes almost 100%, and more preferably a battery in which 98% or more and 102% or less. <Charge / Discharge Control Method> This is a control method for charging / discharging the lithium ion secondary battery configured as described above, and is used when the secondary battery is used as a power supply for driving an electric vehicle (EV). The charging and discharging method will be described below.

When used in an electric vehicle, considering the use under hot summer weather in the midsummer, the high temperature atmosphere in which the battery is placed is 5
Since the temperature is considered to be 0 to 65 ° C, it is desirable to set the upper limit temperature of the battery operating temperature range to 50 to 65 ° C. Then, the total amount of reversibly movable lithium ions at the set upper limit temperature is measured. Since the amount of lithium ions that can move corresponds to the discharge capacity when fully charged, the discharge capacity when fully charged may be measured. In the case where a lithium manganese composite oxide having a spinel structure is used as a positive electrode active material and a carbon material is used as a negative electrode active material, a reversible chargeable / dischargeable battery voltage range is 4.2 in a fully charged state.
V, 3.0 V when fully discharged, and the battery voltage during this period is determined by the state of charge (SOC) of the battery. Therefore, at the upper limit temperature, the battery voltage is 4.2 V
The amount of electricity when charged to the maximum is the maximum amount of reversibly movable lithium ions in the battery operating temperature range.

Assuming that the upper limit temperature is T max and the discharge capacity corresponding to the amount of reversibly movable lithium ions at T max is C max , in this embodiment, the discharge capacity is 0.1 mm at any temperature in the operating temperature range. It is necessary to charge and discharge within a range of electricity amount within 95C max . Then, the battery voltage when charging up to 0.95 C max was measured over the entire battery operating temperature range, and the charging end voltage E at the operating temperature T was measured.
Know in advance as T. And when using the actual secondary battery was charged always to the extent of E T,
If discharge is performed up to 3.0 V, even when the battery is used at any temperature within the operating temperature range, 95% or less of the amount of lithium ions that can move at the upper limit temperature is moved to charge and discharge. It is possible to do.

The method of controlling the amount of lithium ions moving between the positive electrode active material and the negative electrode active material by the end-of-charge voltage is based on the fact that even if the battery deteriorates due to repeated charging and discharging, the deterioration always occurs. 95 of the amount of lithium ions that can be reversibly moved at the maximum temperature

When used as an actual EV drive power supply, in order to obtain a high voltage and capacity, a large number of lithium secondary batteries (cells) are used in the form of an assembled battery connected in series and parallel. . Because there is variation between individual cells,
The above-described charge / discharge control can be applied to each module to which several batteries are connected, and more preferably to each cell.
A bypass circuit (controller) for controlling the charging / discharging voltage based on the information from the temperature detecting means for detecting the temperature and the voltage sensor is provided for each module or unit cell.
Here, in order to simplify the configuration by omitting the configuration, a method of controlling the amount of lithium ions during charging and discharging by replacing the assembled battery with a unit cell will be described.

The present charging / discharging method may be an embodiment suitable for a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) using an electric motor and a gasoline or diesel engine in combination. In the case of HEV, the control of charging the electric power by changing the output of the engine to electric power by a generator may be added. In the case of the HEV, unlike the EV, the charge / discharge control is performed so that the state of charge (SOC) between the fully charged state and the fully discharged state always keeps an appropriate value. Therefore, since the amount of lithium ions that move between the positive electrode active material and the negative electrode active material can be set small, a lithium secondary battery using a spinel-structured lithium manganese composite oxide as a positive electrode active material is a battery suitable for HEV. It can be said that there is.

<Preparation of Battery A> First, a positive electrode active material used for Battery A and a method for synthesizing the same will be described. An attempt was made to obtain a spinel-structured lithium manganese composite oxide represented by the composition formula Li 1.03 Mn 1.97 O 4 as a positive electrode active material. Manganese dioxide and lithium carbonate having an average particle diameter of 25 μm are mixed so that the molar ratio of lithium and manganese is 1.03: 1.97, and fired in an air using an electric furnace at 800 ° C. for 24 hours. And synthesized. Analysis of the obtained synthetic powder with an X-ray diffractometer revealed that the synthetic powder was a single phase of a lithium manganese composite oxide having a spinel structure, and its lattice constant was 8.242 °. Further, when the molar ratio of lithium and manganese was examined by ICP emission analysis, it was found that the composition was almost the same as the charged composition. From this, it was confirmed that the present synthetic powder was a spinel-structured lithium manganese composite oxide represented by a composition formula: Li 1.03 Mn 1.97 O 4 .

[Table 1] As is clear from the results, a certain amount of the lithium ions that can reversibly move between the positive electrode active material and the negative electrode active material at 60 ° C., which is the upper limit of the battery operating temperature range, is included in the positive electrode active material. It was demonstrated that by performing charge and discharge while leaving the battery, it is possible to prevent the capacity deterioration of the lithium secondary battery using the spinel-structured lithium manganese composite oxide as the positive electrode active material, particularly the capacity deterioration at the time of high temperature use. From these results, it was confirmed that a practical charge / discharge method was achieved by suppressing the ion utilization rate of lithium ions to 95% or less.

According to the present invention, a lithium secondary battery using a spinel-structured lithium manganese composite oxide as a positive electrode active material is charged and discharged by a lithium ion moving between the positive electrode active material and the negative electrode active material by charging and discharging. The amount is 9% of the amount of lithium ions that can reversibly move between the positive electrode active material and the negative electrode active material by charging and discharging at the upper limit temperature of the battery operating temperature range.
It is characterized by being controlled so as to be 5% or less. By using this charging method, it is possible to prevent the crystal structure of the spinel-structured lithium manganese composite oxide, which is the positive electrode active material, from destabilizing, especially under high-temperature charging and discharging, and to repeatedly charge and discharge at high temperatures. However, it is possible to suppress deterioration of the discharge capacity of the battery.
