Abstract

Terephthalic acid is formed by the oxidn. of paraxylene in an acetic acid soln. in the presence of a Mn, Co and Br based catalyst. The solid terephthalic acid is sepd. from the mother liquor, which is introduced into a distillation column, pref. above the level of the third plate. Condensed vapours formed mainly of acetic acid and water, from the oxidn. process, are also introduced into the distn. column. This column partially dries the mother liquor so tht the proportion of water in the acetic acid is less than 5% and pref less than 1%. Part of this partially dried m other liquor, which contains at least 50% of the catalyst in the untreated mother liquor, is recycled to the oxidation process. The remainder is discharged as a purge to classic sepn. treatments and catalyst regeneration. The stream of vapour enriched in water coming from the distillation column head is introduced into a second column. In this column distn. in the presence of an azeotropic entraining agent, pref. isobutyl acetate, takes place. The stream leaving the bottom of the second column contains at maximum 5% and pref. 3% water in the acetic acid, and is recycled to the oxidation process. Used for recovering the catalyst and solvent fro the mother liquor of a process of synthesis of terephthalic acid. The amount of water in the oxidation reactors is kept at a reasonable level and a satisfactory recovery of the acetic acid is obtd.
