Abstract

Curing agent for epoxide resins consists of a mixt. of (A) an adduct of formula: (where R1 is 2-60C hydrocarbyl, which may be substd. with prim. sec., or tert. amino or hydroxyl and/or contain amino or amido N atoms in the chain; R2 is a gp. of formula: R6 is H, or CH3; q is 1-5; R3 is a gp. having mol.wt. 56-500 esp. 150-500, this gp. being obtd. by separating two hydroxyl gps. from a polyol or polyphenol; p is 1-1.5; R4 is H, 1-3C alkyl, or phenyl which may be substd. by methyl, chlorine or a group of formula R5OCH2-; R5 is a gp. obtd. by removing the hydroxyl gp, from an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or araliphatic monohydric alcohol; and >=2 H atoms are bonded directly to an aliphatic N atom in cpd. B). The cpd. dissolves in water to give an aq. soln. that acts both as emulsifier and curing agent for epoxide resins. oil-in-water emulsions contg. the agent/epoxide resin can be diluted with water, and cure rapidly at room temp. Weather-resistant, hard, glossy films are obtd.
