Description

_ a /° · PATENTS FORM NO. 3.
PATENTS AND DESIGNS ORDINANCE SPECIFICATION PUNCH AND DIE SET We, MINNIE PUNCH AND DIE COMPANY, INC. a company incorporated under the laws of the State of New Jersey, United States of America of 1053 Coolidge Avenue, Union, New Jersey, United States of America DO HEREBY ^DECLARE the nature of this invention and in vh at manner the same is to be performed to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement : - This invention relates to improvements in punch and die sets for thin sheet material. ; The conventional punch and die set is frequently constructed of steel, is directly connected to the ram of a punch press and is relatively heavy to work with, difficult to set up and expensive to manufacture. Its accuracy depends to some extent upon the alignment of the ram to which the die is attached. It is to an economical yet accurate punch and die set that this invention is directed.
According to the invention,' there is provi ded a punch and die set for thin sheet material, which set has parallel tool mounting plates and is adpated to be operated by a striking ram or other similar drive means, wherein said set includes a movable shedder plate adapted to disengage a . workpiece portion from a die member when in response to the removal of the drive means after a punching stroke, it is acted upon by a shedder actuator, the shedder actuator being so mounted on one of said parallel tool mounting plates that it can be removed without disturbing the positional relationship of said plates or of the punch and die members.
According to the invention there is further provided a punch and die set for thin sheet material which set has parallel tool mounting plates and is adapted to be operated by a striking ram or other similar drive means, wherein said set includes ^movable stripper plate adapted to disengage a workpiece portion from a punch member when in response to the removal of the drive means after a punching stroke, it is moved by a stripper actuator, the stripper actuator being so mounted on one of the parallel tool mounting plates that it can be removed without disturbing the positional relationship of said plate or of the punch and die members.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which : Fig. 1 is a partial cutaway view of a punching apparatus in which a punch and die set according to the present invention is shown in the open position; Fig. 2 is a partial cutaway view of the same apparatus with the punch and die set being shown in the closed position; Fig. 1 ; Fig. is a section taken on the line C-C of Fig. lj Fig, 5 is a detail showing the shedder actuator with th Fig. 6 is a detail of the shedder actuator with punch and die set . the/ appa^sefeu^ in the closed or punching position; (&.
Fig. 7 is a detail of the support stripper with punch and die set » i the/a?ppa-?at»s in the open position; along line A-A of Fig. 2; ;Fig. 9 is a top view of the shedder actuator as shown in Fig. 6 ; Fig. 10 is a cross -sectional view of another embodiment of the Invention, with the die set in the open position; Fig. 11 is a partial cross-sectional view of this other embodiment shown in the punch position; Fig. 12 is a top view of the ejector means; Fig. 13 is a cross -sectional view of Fig. 3 12 taken along the line 13-13 ; Fig. 14 is a cross-sectional view of a die set stripper actuator; and, Fig, 15 is a top view of the actuator of Fig. 14, The apparatus shown in the drawings includes a upon pa*«^l=e¾=plate punchii die set/ ia which a ram or other drive acts to compress the die set between the ram and a base to punch a piece part from web or stock material .
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the punch and / die set is generally indicated by the reference numeral 2 <W and includes a magnesium punch plate 4 and a die plate 6. The two plates 4 and 6 are substantially parallel and mounted for movement toward and away from each other by guide pins 8 secured to the punch plate by retaining rings 10 and operating in guide bushings 12 in the punch plate and guide bushings 14 in the die plate, the retaining rings 16 preventing the escape of the guide pins from the die plate bushings . It is thus seen that the guide pins are secured in bushings 12 and ride in bushings 14, Springs 18 encircle each of the guide pins and urge the two plates apart while the retaining rings 10 and 16 snap into annular slots or grooves 20 formed in the guide pins to prevent separation of the plates. An important advantage of this construction is the ease by which the guide pins may be punch and removed to service the/ die set. Being removable, the guide similar punch and pins may be used with other/ die sets, punch and The' die set rests on the base 22 on removable mounting blocks 24, removable support blocks 26, and removable support strippers 28. A ram plate 30, activated by a press or other drive means moves to engage the top surface of the punch plate 4 to drive the punch plate down to per- form the punching operation. Another important feature of the invention is that by this arrangement, any misalignment punch and of the ram is not transmitted to the/die set since the guide pins determine set alignment.
Referring now to Figs, 1, 2, and 5» attached to the punch plate 4 is a blanking die 32 having a shedder plat 34 and a floating shedder pin 36. shedder actuator 38 is mounted in the punch plate proximate the shedder pin 36.
Figs. 1 and 5 illustrate the relative positions of the punch and shedder actuator 38 and shedder pin 36 when the/ die set is open. The shedder retaining stud 9 is affixed to plate 3 by bolt 47 . Stud 49 moves in cylinder 51 and acts to limit movement of plate 3 .
Referring to Figs . 5 and 9 the shedder actuator 38 comprises a circular housing 40 ha ing a shoulder 42 formed therein. Circular washer or disc springs 29 fill the cavity 46 of the housing 40 and press against the movable pad 48. Retaining rings 45 secure the fixed end of the housing and limit the movable pad. A locking member 50 is removably secured to the punch plate 4 by means of bolt 52. The floating shedder pin 36 rides in the aperture 4 of the punch back up plate 25 and plate 27 and abuts the movable eoad of the shedder actuator 38.
The piercing punch retainer plate 27 acts as a mounting medium for piercing punches. The piercing punch back up plate 25 acts to back up or maintain any piercing punches in their proper position.
It is thus seen that the removable shedder removably actuator is/ secured by the locking means 42, 50, and 52. Being removable the actuator la interchangeable punch and , with other similar/die sets. V® Figs. 2 and 6 illustrate the shedder actuator during the punching operation, when the ram plate 30 moves against the punch plate. The punched piece part 5 presses against the shedder plate 34 and moves the shedder pin 36 6. Upon release of pressure by ram plate 30 the springs #4 7* act to move the end 48 against pin 36 to drive the shedder plate against the punched piece part to forcibly eject the piese part.
The die plate 6 is supported on and secured to the base 22 by means of the removable mounting blocks 24 shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Removable support block 26 also acts to help support the die plate 6.
The blanking punch 56 is secured to the die plate 6 and acts as a stationary punch relative to the moving blanking die in the punching operation. Removable support punch and strippers 28 act to support the /die set and eject the stock material from the blanking punch after the punching operation. Fig. 7 shows a detail of the support stripper when « ο^ punch and A5U ~^ the /die set is in the open position. Circular washer springs 29 are stacked in the cavity 31 proximate the support stripper actuating pin 35. Stripper 28 is placed on pin 3 by hand pressure. The 0-ring or grommet 7 on the end of the pin 35 compresses and moves through the pad 33 so as to join the pin 35 and stripper 28 „ Downward movement of the pin 35 compresses washers 29 so that upon' release of punch pressure washers 29 act to move the pin 35 upward to strip the piece part from the blanking punch 56. The grommet or resilient member 7 retains the housing against the pull of gravity yet allows easy removal.
Figs „ 2 and 8 illustrate the support stripper in the compressed position, as when punching and shows the stripper plate 37 as secured by head 39 and bolt 41. A liquid adhesive on the threads of bolt l prevent creeping .
The retaining ring 3 acts to prevent the support stripper from falling from the pin 35 ° The head 39 protrudes above plate 37 a distance equal to at least twice the thickness of the piece part material. Normal operation is to shed the piece part and then strip the material skeleton.
Improper distance of the head above the plate 37 will cause improper shedding and stripping in that the stripper will drive the skeleton back around the piece part.
The head 39 illustrates me rely one suitable protrusion means for li -at-G-tppeE=pia=aor- =it=aeeessa¾¾f==tteat=fche=p3WtePus=±©R=fee= the minimum distance between the die plate 32 and the stripper plate 37, and it It should be noted that the preferred operation is to shed the piece part prior to stripping the stock.
This is accomplished by having the stripper plate move down, during the punching operation, a distance more than twice the thickness of the stock from which the piece parts are punched. Therefore, upon release of pressure by the ram, the shedder will eject the piece part prior to the stripper plate moving up far enough to strip the stock from Referring now to the further embodiment shown in Pig. 10, die set 103 with ejector 105 rests on base 107 and is compressed by ram 109 to punch piece parts from a stock web 113.
A punch plate 115 Is mounted parallel to a die plate 117. The die plate 117 is in turn mounted to the mounting block 119 which rests on mounting blocks 120 and removable support strippers 121 . Bolts 118 secure the mounting block to the base.
Guide pins 122 with springs 123 act to guide the parallel plates 115 and 117 in their relative movement „ Back up plate 124 acts to back up punches 125 mounted in punch plate 115 and also serves as the mounting means for the ejector 105 .
The blanking die 126 is secured to the punch plate 115 . The shedder plate 127 which acts to eject the punched piece parts is held in position in the blanking die by shedder pins 128.
The ejector 105, of Figs. 10-13, Is mounted on the back-up plate 124 and includes a frame member 130, a strike plate 131* and a movable ejector plate 132.
Bolts 133 In apertures 134 secure the ejector frame 130 to the back up plate 124. Ejector plate retaining screws 135 are secured to the movable ejector plate 132 and ride in slot 136 . The head 137 prevents the ejector plate from separating from the ejector frame. Springs 138 tend to separate the ejector plate from the frame 130 while the spring retaining boss 139 serves to keep the washer springs 138 aligned. The strike plate retaining screw secures the strike plate 131 to the frame 130.
Figs 14 and 15 illustrate the support strippers 121 which act to support the mounting block and help in stripping the stock web from the die after a punching operation.
The operation may best be understood from Figs. punch * 10 and 11 which show the rafl^:^^^^^©-? and die set in the V open and closed positions respectively.
In Fig, 10 it is seen that the ram 109 Is up, punch and- the/ die set is open, the movable ejector plate 132 is Dfifi^ pressing against the punch back up plate 124 and the shedder pins 128 so that the shedder plate 127 Is in the extended position. The stock web is in position for the punching operation.
Fig. 11 illustrates the punching operation which is initiated by the downward movement of the ram 109 against the strike plate 131 of the ejector 105 . As may be seen in Fig. 11 the punch plate 115 with the blanking die 126 and punches 125 moves down to punch the stock web so as to form a piece part. In so doing the shedder plate 127 forces the shedder pins 128 up against the e ector plate 132 thereby moving the spring retaining boss up into apertures 1 5 in the strike plate 131 . A slug 146 is shown dropping after the punch operation.
Upon removal of the ram 109, washer springs 138 act to force the ejector plate 132 down against shedder pins 128 which force the shedder plate 127 against the punched piece part 148 to eject it from the blanking die 126 of the die set 103.
It is thus seen that the removable ejector 105 acts to eject punched parts allow the ejector 105 to be similar punch and for use on other/die sets. needed for every parallel plate die set.
It should be realized that more than one ejector punch and may be used on a/ die set but the fact that the ejector is universal in nature is a significant advantage. The universal fittin ages or To reiterate, the apparatus shown in Figs . 10-15 contemplates the use of a removable, universal fitting and ejector means on a punching/die set, with a ram for striking the ejector to perform the punching operation. punch and By attaching the ejector means on the/ die set, no special adaptation of the ram is required.
The removable feature of the guide pins allows the pins to be used interchangeably and therefore separate sets of guide pins do not have to be maintained for use punch and with each/die set. The ease with which the removable punch and guide pins facilitate disassembly of the/ die set allows t operator to easily separate the punch plate from the die plate to sharpen the punches or make other necessary punch and repairs or adjustments to the/ die set.
The removable shedder and support stripper members provide means for forcefully ejecting the punched piece part and releasing the stock from which the piece is punched „ By being removable the shedder actuator and N punch and ^-W^ support stripper may be used interchangeably on other/ die sets of the same general type thereby eliminating the need for having a complete set of actuators for each/die set, The internal actuator constructions provide forceful positive action with a minimum of parts.
