Abstract

A method of and an apparatus for applying an individual one piece waistband to a garment uses a folder 10, having a trumpet shaped guide, for folding a single elongate length of waistband material 40 onto an edge of garment material body fabric 38. A guide 20 feeds a length of elastic or other interlining material vertically upwards or downwards and turns it into the plane of travel or direction of sewing of the garment material 38.

Description

The present invention relates to an individual one piece waistband and in particular to a method and apparatus for manufacturing a waistband, such as an individual elasticated waistband.
When an elasticated waistband is formed from the same material as a garment, it is necessary at the cutting stage to ensure that a system is used to relate the waistband material with the garment material so that no differences in shading will occur in the finished garment. In practice, each waistband and garment is numbered. All the waistbands are taken and joined end to end in sequence and put on a roll. The operator then presents each garment for sewing in the same sequence as the waistbands on the roll. When the waistband is being applied, it is fed into a folder forming the waistband at right angles to the direction of feed of the elastic material and the direction of sewing of the garment. This right hand turn can create tension on the fabric particularly if the material has some inherent stretch characteristics.
It is the object of the invention to alleviate the disadvantages associated with the production of a separate one piece elasticated waistband and an individual waistband in general.
The present invention provides a method of applying an individual one piece waistband to a garment comprising supplying an elongate length of material to a joining or sewing apparatus in a direction parallel to the direction of sewing or joining of the garment material; the elongate length of material being adapted to be the waistband, folding the elongate length of material about a marginal - 2 80931 portion of the garment material, feeding a continuous length of elastic or other interlining material in a plane which intersects the plane of supply of the waistband material and in a generally vertically downward direction or vertically upward direction, turning the length of the elastic or other interlining material into the plane of supply of the waistband material, so that the waistband material is folded about the length of elastic or other interlining material and, so that the elastic or other interlining material is either positioned towards the front or rear respectively of the garment body fabric within the waistband.
According to another aspect, there is provided apparatus for manufacturing an individual one piece waistband for a garment, comprising a folder having means for supplying the waistband material in an elongate length of material to a sewing or joining apparatus in a direction parallel to the travel of the garment material, the folder including means for folding the elongate length of material about a marginal portion of the garment material, a guide for feeding and turning a continuous length of elastic or other interlining material from a plane which intersects a plane of the supply of the waistband material to the plane of supply of the waistband material so that the waistband material is folded about the length of elastic material or other interlining material, the guide being adapted to supply the length of elastic or other interlining material in a generally vertically downward or vertically upward direction, so that the elastic or other interlining material is either positioned towards the front or rear respectively of the garment body fabric within the waistband.
The invention will hereinafter be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings which shown, by way of example only, one embodiment of a folder according to the invention and two examples of waistbands produced by an apparatus of the invention. In the drawings : Figures 1 and la are perspective views of a folder according to the invention from different respective sides and Figure 2 and 2a are perspective views respectively of an example of waistband with the elastic to one side of the garment material and with the elastic to the other side of the garment material body fabric.
In the drawings, the folder 10, shown by way of example, comprises a trumpet shaped guide 15 for folding a single elongate length of waistband material onto an edge of garment material body fabric. The waistband material is fed into the sewing or joining point parallel to the direction of travel of the garment material. A guide 20 is used to feed a length of elastic material vertically downwards and turn it into the plane of travel of the waistband material so that the waistband is formed about the elastic material.
When fed vertically downwards, the elastic 35 is to one side such as the outer side of the garment material 38 within the waistband 40 as shown in Figure 2a. When the guide 20 is provided so as to feed vertically upwards then the elastic material 35 is on the other side such as the inner side of the garment material.
To ensure that the correct waistband material is attached to the correct garment material, the waistband material maybe attached or clipped to the garment material at the cutting stage, thus greatly simplifying the manufacture of an individual one piece waistband. At the formation of the waistband, the waistband material is detached from the garment material and the waistband is formed with an elasticated core using the folder 10. The elastic material can be fed from a continuous source of elastic at the sewing station and thus does not have to be individually cut and provided with each batch of materials for each waistband.
One or more rows of stitches S are used to secure the waistband. In Figures 2 and 2a, four rows of stitches S are used to secure the elastic 35 to the waistband 40, with one of the rows used to secure the assembly to the garment material 38.
In place of elastic, an interlining material or non-elasticated material may be used with the process and apparatus of the invention.
