Abstract
The flat pole of an accumulator is intended to be formed so that it can be used reversibly as a round pole. The round pole should enable a round pole terminal to be perfectly fastened, should be simple to assemble, ensure good contact, be robust, and be simple to manufacture. The adapter (1) consists of lead or a lead alloy, in one piece, and has a foot ring (3), the free diameter of which is adapted to the greatest breadth of the flat pole, so that the foot ring (3) can be plugged entirely over the flat pole. One cylinder segment (5) each is fixed to the foot ring (3) via bridges (4), and said segments are arranged opposite each other with a gap (6), which corresponds to the thickness of the flat pole. The convex surface of the cylinder segments (5) is inclined at an angle of about 3 DEG .
Description
The invention relates to an adapter for a flat terminal post of an accumulator the post having two flat sides and the ; adapter serving for the reversible formation of a round terminal post.
According bo the present invention there is provided an adapter for a flat terminal post of an accumulator having two flat sides for the reversible conversion to a generally cylindrical terminal post, the adapter comprising two partcylindrical segments connected together and each defining one 30 plane and one curved surface and the plane surfaces being spaced one from another by a distance equal to the thickness of the flat terminal post.
Further according to the present invention there is provided an adapter for converting a rectangular section terminal post of an accumulator into a generally cylindrical post comprising: two spaced part-cylindrical segments each having a plahe surface facing the other segment, and means connecting corresponding end portions of the segments.
Two adapters embodying the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view from below of a first embodiment;
Figure 2 is a section of the adapter of Figure 1;
Figure J shows the adapter of Figure 1 in a section on the line III-III of Figure 2;
- 2 44813
Figure 4 shows the adapter of -Figured in plan view;
Figure 5 is a view from beneath another embodiment of adapter;
Figure 6 is a side view of the adapter of Figure 5j
Figure 7 is a section on line VII-VII, of Figure 6; and.
Figure 8 is a view of the adapter of Figure 5 from above.
The adapters 1 and 2 illustrated in the drawings are intended for engagement on a flat terminal post of a lead-acid accumulator and serve to form a round post. It is possible to remove the adapters 1 and 2 from the flat terminal posts, in order at any time to make possible an adaptation of the battery connections provided to the electrical leads of the vehicle. The adapters herein described, which are provided for the positive post of a battery are fundamentally the same. The battery may be any type of primary cell accumulator.
The adapter 1 consists, in one-piece, of lead alloy and has a base ring, of which the outside diameter is suited to the largest width of the flat terminal post, so that the base ring can be engaged fully over the flat terminal post. Above each of two stems 4 a cylindrical segment 5 is mounted so that the two segments are in opposed spaced relationship to one another and both are mounted on the base ring 3. The space between the cylindrical segments 5 corresponds to the thickness dimension of the flat terminal post.
The cylindrical segments 5 have an outer surface
- 5 44813 inclined at an angle of about 3° as is indicated in the drawing by the angle d . - The dimensions of the illustrated embodiment are:
base ring outer: 26mm. base ring inner: 14.2mm 5 space 7.4mm: height: 20.5mm.
The adapter 2 of Figures; 5 to 8 differs from the adapter of Figures 1 to 4 in that no base ring is provided as a support member for the cylindrical segments, but a top ring is provided instead. The top ring is illustrated as a disc 7, which holds the cylindrical segments 8 together, of which the outer surface is again inclined at an angle of substantially 3° and of which the plane inner surface 9 is provided with a wedge shape projection 10 which can engage in corresponding , recesses of the flat terminal post during mounting of the adapter 2. The dimensions are:
annular disc : 17.5mm base diameter : - 19.3mm space , : 7.2mm inclinitioh : 3° height : 18.4mm
The adapters 1 and 2 may he mounted releasably on conventional'flat terminal posts and form with their outer surface a round post, the plane inner surfaces being a tight fit on the flat ^ides of the flat terminal post of the installation so that good electrical contact is ensured.
- 4 4 4 813
With both embodiments of the invention according to the above description the cylindrical segments may have an inclined outer surface, in order to form a frusto-conical shape round terminal post. Preferably all the parts of the adapter are in one piece of lead or a lead alloy.
On purchase of a battery the adapter in accordance with the invention can be simultaneously supplied so that the purchaser can by a simple engagement of the adapter on the flat terminal post form a round terminal post if this is necessary because of the leads incorporated in the vehicle.
On the other hand it is possible to fit all replacement batteries with flat terminal posts and adapters at the factory so that the purchaser who requires a battery with a flat post can readily provide a connection simply by removing the adapter. This arrangement gives rise to the simplest storage requirements.
