Abstract
1,205,174. Vibration dampers. BURMEISTER & WAIN'S MASKIN-OG SKIBSBYGGERI. 13 Feb., 1968 [15 Feb., 1967], No. 6966/68. Heading F2S. [Also in Division F1] Longitudinal oscillations, at least in one axial direction, of a shaft 3 of a piston or turbine engine, are effectively reduced by a substantially rigid connection between the free end of the shaft and the engine bedplate 2. Said connection comprises a cylinder 1 secured to the bedplate 2 and filled with pressure oil through a check valve 7, and a piston 8 secured to the end of the crankshaft 3 via a roller bearing 13. The cylinder is provided with an outlet valve (not shown) which opens when the oil pressure exceeds a predetermined value. The natural frequency of the shafting is thus increased so that the risk of resonance is overcome. In a modification the cylinder is contained in an axial bore in the crank-shaft, which serves as a pressure lubricating duct, the piston being secured to the bedplate, Fig. 2 (not shown). Oscillations may be reduced in both directions if desired.
