Abstract

4-O-beta-D-galacto-pyranosyl-D -fructo-furanose suitable for medical use is prepd. from the isomer mixt. obtd. by the known isomerisation reactions with sodium hydroxide and borax from lactose, by removing the cations present in the isomer mixt. with a cation exchange resin in the hydrogen form, removing the borate ions from the resulting soln. in two steps using first a medium strength, then a strong anion exchange resin in the hydroxyl form, setting the pH of the resulting mildly alkaline soln. in the known way with cation exchange resins to 4-7, and finally after opt. filtration, concentrating the soln. in the known way to a syrup with a solids content of 75-80wt.%, or alternatively prepg. a solid prod. by spray-drying or by lipophilisation.
