Abstract

The present invention describes a ring system for supporting an intraocular lens suitable to substitute the normal (crystalloid) lens of an eye under cataract. This system is characterized by an annular elastic element having a toroidal shape in general, which approximately corresponds to the peripheral shape (i.e. the equatorial) of the natural crystalloid lens. This feature on one hand keeps the anterior capsule at a distance from the posterior one, thereby preventing fibrosis, and on the other hand prevents -by its contact with the equatorial region- the migration of epithelial cells fromthe anterior capsule to the posterior one and thereby the opacity of the posterior capsule. The central part of the lens, which has the refractive power, may be positioned subsequently during this procedure, or replaced at a later stage. The presence of the said peripheral ring allows a more precise centering of the optical element. Furthermore, this ring allows coupling of the tension of the Zinn's membrane with an adaptive intraocular lens. This coupling, which is accompanied by a radial tension towards the interior of the ring, is achieved by suitably suspending the ring on the capsule, byentrapping the anterior capsule in a suitable incision, by an adhesive or by the normal biological activity of the anterior capsule.
