Abstract

Transpedicular screw/rod/ligament system for posterior spinal arthrodesis, the screw used in which, features clockwise spirals attached on a similarly coiled central lamina, which consists of a core part and anticlockwise oriented blades. The described screw functions as a graft since it may be fully integrated with the surrounding cancellous bone tissue. This is achieved because the two 180o coiled spiral pockets allow the all aspect contact. The front edge of the screw is hollow and slightly sharp. The screws are connected with the use of a ligament element and a multi-part rod. The assembly may freely bend until the final fastening of the nuts, which is performed for each vertebra separately, thanks to appropriate sockets on the ligament and the corresponding spherical heads of the rod-parts. This facilitates installation as well as it allows the application of the rod without permanent tension. After the nuts have been fastened, the structure is secured in any desirable position. The method also facilitates all reduction manipulations before the final fastening. The entire system, which is assembled with the method described above with bendable screws that are far more resistant to stress than rigid ones, both integrates faster, since the screws act as grafts, as well as it is more resistant to mechanical stress. Finally, the method increases the endurance of the structure.
