Abstract
A method of preparing a phosphor comprises (a) firing a mixture of starting materials comprising zinc and/or cadmium sulphide, selenide or telluride and a compound providing copper, silver or gold as main activator, in the presence of a halogen or a gaseous or wholly volatilizable halogen compound so that halogen is incorporated as a first co-activator, (b) moistening the fired product with a solution of indium or gallium to provide a second co-activator, and (c) refiring in an oxygen-free atmosphere. The halogen may be bromine, alone or as ammonium bromide, and the atmosphere may be nitrogen. The percentage of cadmium may be 25% or more and the molar ratio of combined co-activators to activator should be greater than unity. The preparation of zinc-cadmium sulphide activated with silver, bromine and gallium is described in detail, both firings being at 975 DEG C. The product is compared with similar ones in which either the bromine or the gallium is omitted, and the superiority in regard to colour shift is shown.
