Abstract
Fumaric acid is prepared by heating an aqueous maleic acid solution with a watersoluble bromine providing material having the oxidation state of the bromine less than 5, with an oxidizing agent having a standard oxidation-reduction potential of at least 1.23 volts, and in the presence of molecular oxygen. Ammonium bromide, sodium bromide, cadmium ammonium bromide, hydrogen bromide, manganese bromide and N-bromo-succinimide are mentioned and oxidizing agents are hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid, cumene hydroperoxide, benzoyl peroxide, sodium perborate, and preferably ammonium persulphate. Preferably air is continuously sparged through the reaction mixture.
