Abstract

Shaped refractory articles are formed from a composition containing 2-30% by weight of carbon, e.g. graphite, the balance being selected from 1, a mixture of fireclay and calcined fireclay, e.g. grog or chamotte or 2, a graded mixture of alumino-silicates or fused or calcined alumina with or without plastic clay or 3, a graded mixture of magnesia with or without spinels or spinel forming oxides, e.g. alumina, chromia, magnesium aluminate spinel containing chromium sesqui-oxide and iron oxide and chrome ore. The formed bodies are fired in an inert or reducing atmosphere.
