Abstract

994,874. Valves. BOVING & CO. Ltd. Sept. 28, 1961 [Oct. 11, 1960], No. 34759/60. Heading F2V. The shaft 3, Fig. 3, of a butterfly valve is offset from the plane of the valve rim and may be actuated from a hand wheel through a gearbox. The valve rim is provided with a continuous flat-packing ring 4 held by a clamping member 5, which ring 4 coacts with a seat annulus 7; the ring 4 is of flexible natural or synthetic rubber which may be laminated with textile reinforcement, the ring periphery 11 being of frusto-conical form. The angle A of the ring periphery is equal to the angle B by which the shaft axis is offset from the plane of the butterfly rim so that a mean perpendicular C from the periphery 11 bisects the shaft axis at D, which perpendicular defines the radius of the spherical surface 12, Fig. 4, of the annulus 7 that is centred on D, which latter is positioned mid-way along the shaft 3. The periphery 11 meets the surface 12 chordwise, so providing two line-contact sealing-lips 13, 14 which deflect under fluid pressure to enhance the sealing effect.
