Abstract

In the production of town gas by steam reforming of a hydrocarbon in which part of the hydrogen-containing product gas is recycled to the reforming zone, gases heavier than hydrogen are removed from the recycle gas by passage through an adsorbent bed, and the spent bed is desorbed by the passage of the remaining product gas at a lower pressure. The two gas streams may be passed alternately through two beds of adsorbent material. As shown the product of steam-reforming of sulphur-containing naphtha is divided into two, one stream at 30 atm. is directed through active charcoal <PICT:0992161/C4-C5/1> bed 1, wherein CO, CO2, N2 and hydrocarbons are adsorbed, and from which the effluent at 28 atm. is recycled to the reformer, and the other stream is evacuated to e.g. 15 atm., passed through charcoal bed 2 to desorb the gases adsorbed in a previous cycle, and withdrawn as product. The two streams are periodically "switched" by means of valves 3 to 8. Before reforming, the sulphur content of the feed is reduced to <1 ppm (for preferred 50% nickel oxide catalyst), or <5 ppm (15-20% nickel oxide) by sulphuric acid treatment hydrofining, and H2S removal. Specifications 850,443, 965,565 and 965,566 are referred to.
