Abstract

990,786. Injection moulding. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. May 17, 1961 [May 23, 1960], No. 47827/64. Divided out of 990,784. Heading B5A. An injection mould for use in covering cored balls e.g. golf balls, comprises a plurality of substantially unpatterned mating die plates A, B defining a spherical space when assembled, the plates having at least three symmetrically disposed support members G for supporting the core, and the support members each having a radially inwardly decreasing cross section. In use, the core is mounted within the die plates A, B which are then inserted in a sleeve C, and a plate D screwed on. Cover-forming material e.g. a polyurethane polymer is poured into a transfer cavity and a plunger E inserted. The mould is then inverted and allowed to close under its own weight. When closed, the mould is placed in an oven to effect partial curing and then cooled. The coated ball is then transferred to a heated compression mould to form the finished golf ball.
