Abstract

A composition used for tobacco smoke filters (see Division A2) comprises a poly-a -olefin, a plasticizable modifier and a plasticizer. Polypropylene and polyethylene are the preferred polya -olefins. Many modifiers and plasticizers are listed. Plasticizable modifiers exemplified are: polymethyl methacrylate; polystyrene; polyb -pinene; polyvinylacetate; polyvinyl butyral; cellulose tripropionate; and a polyester derived from dimethyl terephthalate, dimethyl succinate and cyclohexanedimethanol. Plasticizers exemplified are di-(methoxyethyl) phthalate; diethyl phthalate; mineral oil; glycerol triacetate; di-(methoxyethyl phthalate; triethyl citrate; and liquid polybutene glycol; used with the above modifiers respectively. Specifications 765,961 and 893,958 are referred to.ALSO:A filter comprises a rod like mass of continuous filaments composed of a poly-a -olefin, a plasticizable modifier and a plasticizer for said modifier. A poly-a -olefin, e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene, is mixed with a plasticizable modifier (preferably 25-50%), and the mixture melted and spun into filaments. The filaments are drafted, plied into a tow and crimped. The crimped tow is fluffed out and sprayed on both sides with a plasticizer (preferably 8-16%), pulled back together into a compact cord, and fed into a cigarette filter rod making machine. The completed filter rods are aged at room temperature. Suitable plasticizable modifiers are polymers that include: Polyacrylate and polymethacrylate esters of saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohols with 1 to 18 carbon atoms, polystyrene, polyvinyl esters of saturated monocarboxylic aliphatic acids with 2 to 18 carbon atoms, polyvinyl acetals of saturated aliphatic aldehydes containing only one carbonyl group, polyesters of saturated dibasic acids and saturated aliphatic dihydric alcohols, polymerized norpinene, and cellulose esters of monocarboxylic aliphatic acids. Many examples of the above classes of compounds are specified. Suitable plasticizers include: high boiling liquid organic esters, water insoluble polypropylene and polybutylene p glycols, and mineral oils: examples of which are specified. Quantitative examples for the method are also included. Specifications 765,961 and 893,958 are referred to.
