Abstract

983,576. Surgical dressings. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. Dec. 13, 1962 [Dec. 13, 1961], No. 47117/62. Heading A5R. [Also in Division B5] A surgical dressing comprises a cellular sponge material 11 having numerous closely spaced hydrophilic fibres 13 extending from at least one surface into the main body of the sponge, the fibres 13 being uncoated by the material of said sponge and forming channels acting to wick fluids from the surface of said cellular sponge material into the main body thereof. The fibres may be needled into the sponge from a layer on one surface of the sponge, thus mechanically laminating the two layers, and may extend right through the sponge to the opposite surface. There may be a fibre layer thus laminated to two opposite faces of the sponge, or conversely one layer of fibres laminated between two layers of sponge. The sponge material used is hydrophobic and may be polyurethane, polyethers, nylon, polyethylene, rubber, polyvinyl chloride or formalinized polyvinyl alcohol, whilst the fibres may be any natural cellulosic fibre, rayon, or cellulose acetate. U.S.A. Specification 2,956,310 is referred to.
