Abstract
A motor vehicle includes a diesel internal combustion engine 1 driving an electric generator 2 contolled by an electronic control unit 7, and at least one electrical power storage means to store energy created by the generator, eg a battery 4. The electronic control means is operable to periodically apply a load to the internal combustion engine so that it provides sufficient heat to cause regeneration of a particulate trap 5 present in the vehicle's exhaust system 8. Preferably the motor vehicle is provided with a secondary source of power, eg one or more electric motors 3, such as in a hybrid motor vehicle. An internal clock located within the electronic control unit is used to determine when the engine has been operated for sufficient time to require regeneration of the particulate trap. When regeneration is required a load is applied to the engine by causing the electric generator to rapidly charge the electrical power storage means. If one or more electric motors are present then a negative current may be applied to them, to produce a braking effect that increases the load on the engine.
