Abstract

An organosilicon composition for waterproofing porous and fibrous materials (see Division D1), comprises an organic solvent solution or aqueous emulsion of a mixture and/or a reaction product of a cyanuric halide and an organosilicon compound having at least one organic substituent containing a hydrogen atom capable of reacting with the cyanuric halide with elimination of hydrogen halide. The organosilicon compound can be a silane or siloxane containing at least one functional radical linked to Si preferably through at least 2 C atoms, e.g. an aminopropyl, N-methylaminopropyl, aminobutyl or hydroxybutyl radical, the remaining valencies of Si being satisfied by alkyl, alkenyl, aryl or halo-hydrocarbon radicals or H atoms. Reaction occurs on mixing the reactants in the presence of a base, e.g. an alkali metal carbonate or hydroxide, or, preferably, an amine, and the preferred proportions of the reactants are such that only one of the halogen atoms of the cyanuric halide is replaced by the organosilicon compound. In examples the compounds are formed in situ from cyanuric chloride and various aminoalkyl siloxane-dimethylsiloxane co-polymers. Specification 680,265 is referred to.ALSO:Porous and fibrous materials, e.g. wool, cotton, nylon, rayon and silk, are rendered water-repellent by treatment with a mixture and/or reaction product of a cyanuric halide and an organosilicon compound having at least one organic radical containing at least one H atom capable of reacting with the cyanuric halide with elimination of hydrogen halide (see Division C3). The organosilicon compounds used are silanes and siloxanes containing, as the preferred reactive substituents, aminopropyl or aminobutyl radicals. The treatment may be effected (1) by pretreating the material with a base, e.g. an alkali metal carbonate or hydroxide or an amine, and drying, followed by impregnation with an organic solvent solution of the organosilicon compound and cyanuric halide, with subsequent drying, steaming, washing and further drying; (2) by the above pre-treatment followed by impregnation with an aqueous emulsion of the reactants, with subsequent washing and drying; and (3) by impregnating the material with an organic solvent solution or aqueous emulsion of the organosilicon compound, cyanuric halide and the base, with subsequent drying. Examples are given of the treatment of cotton pieces by the above processes. Specification 680,265 is referred to.
