Abstract

977,953. Card stackers. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. March 26, 1963 [March 27, 1962], No. 11888/63. Heading B6H. In a card stacker, the stacker pan 16 is pivoted to a shaft 15 mounted between the two uprights 14a of a U-shaped member 14 slidable vertically between two pairs of guide bars 13 fixed to the two vertical flanges 12 of a vertical transverse plate 11. Each flange 12 has two notches 17 and 18 enabling the stacker pan 16 to take either of two positions shown (one in broken lines). A second shaft 22 mounted between the uprights 14a carries a pair of rollers 21. The stub ends of the two shafts 15 and 22 ride in the space between each pair of guide bars 13, thereby retaining the U- shaped member for vertical movement only. For upward-delivery of the cards (i.e. stacking the cards with the first card remaining uppermost), the stacker pan 16 is retained by the notches 17 in the uppermost position. The first card 1 is delivered by rollers 19, 20 so that it rests at an angle in the stacker pan with its rear portion, supported by rollers 21, projecting at an acute angle across the path of the next incoming card. The second card 2 is fed under the first card 1, but due to friction between the cards, does not progress as far as the bottom corner of the pan 16. Axial grooves 23 in the top feed roller 20 lifts the trailing end of the second card 2 above the path of the next card 3. Friction between cards 2 and 3 feeds card 2 into the bottom corner of the pan, and the trailing end of card 3 is then lifted by the grooves 23 in readiness for the next incoming card. With the pan 16 in the lower position on notches 18, the cards are fed in by the rollers 19, 20 and fall to the bottom of the pan with the first card lowermost. With the U- shaped member 14 lowered to the bottom of the rails 13, the pan 16 may be tilted upwards about the shaft 15 for stowage.
