[Also in Division H2] An ignition device for an internal-combustion engine comprises an integral structure including spark electrodes 9, 10 and a piezo electric unit, adapted to be fitted to the combustion chamber so that the unit is subjected to mechanical pressure by the piston as shown there are two piezoelectric units 6, 7 but a single unit may be used, a switch may be incorporated in the device and a separate ignition plug may be fitted. The spring may be dispensed with. In Fig. 5 a capacitor 18 is associated with the spark electrodes 9<SP>1</SP> 10<SP>1</SP>. The changeover switch 17 is operated in association with the compressing and releasing of the piezoelectric unit to produce sparks alternately between the electrodes 9, 10 and 9<SP>1</SP>, 10<SP>1</SP>. Another changeover switch 20 and a battery 19 are provided for firing the ignition devices if the piezoelectric unit fails The device may be mounted on the piston.
