974,881. Rectilinear - motion bearings. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO. Ltd. Sept. 30, 1960 [Oct. 2, 1959], No. 33499/59. Heading F2A. [Also in Division G3] Rotation or skew of a member driven along guide means is automatically corrected by power means responding to detection of skew of the member relative to a reference device which is free of rotation or skew and moves with the member. As shown, a machine tool slide 3 is moved along guides 5 and 6 by a lead screw 2 driven through reduction gearing (not shown) by a motor 1. Skew of the slide is detected by relative movement between the right-hand side of slide 3 and an auxiliary slide 11 moved along guides 12 and 6 by the left-hand side of slide 3 through a ball coupling 14. Such movement is detected by a movable core inductive pick-off 10, the output signal from which is utilised to control a motor 7 moving the right-hand side of slide 3 by means of rack and pinion gearing 8 to correct the skew. Pre-loaded ball bearings (not shown) provided between slide 11 and guide 12 are of the type in which balls move in tracks, parallel to the axis of guide rod 12, arranged round the circumference of guide rod 12. Alternatively, spring-loaded V-groove bearings may be provided between slide 11 and guide 12. Specification 842,376 is referred to.
