Abstract

A polymer composition contains a major proportion (50-99.5%) of polypropylene and as a reinforcing agent (0.5-50% of) a stereospecific substantially linear alkenyl aromatic-butadiene copolymer in which at least 23% of the butadiene linkages have the cis-1, 4 configuration. The copolymer is a butadiene elastomer with: A 50-95% of butadiene linkages of which preferably 30-97% have the cis-1, 4 configuration when the copolymer comprises 40-60% of butadiene, and B 5-50% of alkenyl aromatic linkages. Specified alkenyl aromatic monomers B are styrene, a -methyl styrene, vinyl naphthalenes, vinyl toluenes and 1-vinyl-2, 4, 6-trimethyl benzene. Suitable copolymerization catalysts are the lower halides (e.g. chlorides) of titanium, chromium and cobalt with a trialkyl aluminium compound, e.g. triethyl aluminium. The copolymerization is effected in solution and produces a block polymer. In the examples a styrene/butadiene copolymer is used. Fillers, dyes, pigments, anti-oxidants, stabilizers, lubricants and plasticizers may be added to the composition. In addition to films, sheets and rods, a number of articles, into which the composition may be fabricated, are listed.
