Abstract
971,199. Castors. FLEXELLO CASTORS & WHEELS Ltd. July 8, 1963 [Oct. 24, 1962; Feb. 15, 1963], Nos. 40281/62 and 6280/63. Heading A4U. A self-centring castor includes a cam 9 (Figs. 1, 4), or 9a (Fig. 8), and an associated spring 10 or spring urged member 15, either one of the cam 9, 9a or the spring 10 or spring urged member 15 being associated with the fixed part of the castor and the other with the wheel fork 4, and the cam being profiled such that the action of the spring 10 or spring urged member 15 on the cam face always tends to move the wheel fork to a fore and aft aligned position. In one embodiment (Figs. 1, 4) on attachment plate 1 carries a fixed stem 3 extending through the combined bearing plate and wheel fork 4, the semi-elliptical extension on cam 9 on the stem 3 being engaged between block springs 10 anchored at one end 11 to the wheel fork 4 and having free ends engaged in a hole 12 in the opposite side of the fork. Outward bowing of the blade springs 10 on rotation of the fork 4 produces a centring action. In an alternative cam arrangement (Fig. 5) a circular-section extension 9 on the stem 3 carries a plate member 13 having protruding ends 14 which hold the springs 10 when the fork is off centre. In another embodiment (Fig. 8), the castor stem carries a heart-shaped cam 9a which is engaged by a roller 15 carried on a lever 16 pivoted at one end 17 to the wheel fork 4, the roller 15 being urged into contact with the cam 9a by a spring 19 connected to the free end 18 of the lever 16 and anchored, as at 20, to the wheel fork 4.
