Abstract

966,398. Aerials. MARCONI CO. Ltd. Oct. 11, 1962 [Feb. 9, 1962], No. 5062/62. Heading H4A. In a portable radio reflector the flexible reflective surface R is supported by the rigid circular member S and is held in shape by a gas pumped into the space between the member S and the reflector R. The reflector R comprises a glass cloth impregnated with silicone rubber and rendered conductive by a flexible metal deposit or alternatively it comprises a wire woven glass cloth or a glass cloth-rubber laminate incorporating a flexible metal mesh. The support member S comprises a glass clothresin laminate and is formed in three foldable sections hinged together (Fig. 4, not shown) and held rigid by support bars (Fig. 3, not shown). In use the reflector R is attached to the periphery of the support member S either by sticking or by an annular U-clip or by the L-shaped annulus D shown. The gas is applied either through a special valve in the support member or through the waveguide F feeding the horn H. The joint between the members R and S is preferably not air-tight so that the required gas pressure has to be maintained by continuous pumping. Polarizing conductors may be incorporated in the support member S or the reflector member R.
