A clearer roller for one or more top or bottom rollers of a drafting head is alternately stopped and rotated by automatic means, means also being provided to remove the fly stripped by the clearer roller. In Fig. 1 lower rollers 3 and upper rollers 3<SP>1</SP> are cleared by clearer rollers 1 and 1<SP>1</SP> respectively. Ratchets 4 and 4<SP>1</SP> are fast on these rollers and are engaged by pawls 5, 5<SP>1</SP> which are adjustably mounted on brackets fixed to a lever 6. The lever 6 has a spring tongue 8 adjustably fastened to it and is made pivotable either by the resilient engagement of the tongue 8 with the smooth part of a feed roller 3<SP>11</SP> as shown or by rigidly clamping the tongue 8. The lever 6 is periodically lifted by a cam 7 on the lower roller 3, so that the pawls are disengaged from the ratchets and allow the clearer rollers to be rotated by their associated drawing roller until the pawls are again lowered. Alternative means for lifting the lever 6 may be provided independent of the machine drive and may have an adjustable time control. The clearer rollers have fly removed therefrom by suction devices 10. In a further form an edge clearer roller is provided i.e. one having concave surfaces of the same curvature as the roller with which it is associated. In this case the clearer is lifted away from its associated drafting roller, rotated through an appropriate angle and shifted back into contact with the drafting roller.
