Anaesthetic vaporizing apparatus comprises a liquid anaesthetic container 14 carried by a body 1 through which gas passes, a wick in the container, means 7 normally shielding the wick from gas passing through the body and adjusting means 9 for exposing a variable area of the wick to the gas and thus controlling the amount of anaesthetic vapour introduced into the gas. A valve body 1 has an inlet 3 and an outlet 4 interconnected by a chamber 2. A container 14 of liquid anaesthetic is threaded to the body adjacent to the chamber 2 and has a wicksupporting stem 17 which extends from its base and projects into the chamber 2. A hollow cylindrical valve element 7 in the body has a screw-threaded operating spindle 9 which projects outside the body. The valve element may be moved to cover the projecting end of the stem 17 and to seat against a washer 6 supported on a wall 16 separating the container and the chamber 2 and thus shield the wick supported by the stem from gas passing through the valve body around the valve element. Alternatively, the valve element may be raised from its seat by an adjustable amount to expose the wick to gas flowing through the valve body. Wicks of materials having different capillarities are used according to the amount of liquid it is desired to present to the gas stream in a given time. The wick may comprise cords of loosely twisted wasted yarn depending loosely around the stem. In an alternative construction, the wick is raised from an unexposed position to a variable exposed position by operating a screw (Fig. 3, not shown).
