Abstract

963,377. Skin-packaging. S. M. ALEXANDER & CO. Ltd. April 30, 1963 [May 1, 1962], No. 16608/62. Heading B8C. In packaging articles by vacuum-drawing a heated thermoplastic sheet on to a backing on which they are supported, the sheet is caused to be mechanically keyed to the backing. The backing may be faced corrugated board and the sheet 8 may be forced into apertures at its edges as at 8a, Fig. 3. Alternatively the top surface of the backing may be apertured so that the sheet may expand beneath the apertures to form studs 8a, Fig. 6. The sheet may be drawn between the corrugations of single faced board, expanding the former adjacent the base, Fig. 8, or it may embrace the peaks of a plain corrugated sheet 14, Fig. 10, shrinking to grip them on cooling. The sheet may extend beneath the margins of a plain board backing, the perforated support of the vacuum chamber, Fig. 4 (not shown), having a raised area, or cylindrical holes in a plain board may provide sufficient key when the sheet is drawn into them. Notches or recesses may be cast in the edges of a sheet to provide the key.
