Abstract
An electrical device for the treatment of constipation comprises means, under control of the patient, for producing a periodic stimulating current for application through electrodes to an appropriate nerve centre, together with means for controlling the magnitude of the output. A transistor associated with a feedback transformer passes rising and falling currents through the transformer in dependence on the charging and discharging of a condenser connected to its base. The periodicity is adjusted to approximately one third of a second and an output winding on the transformer is connected through a variable resistor to contact p electrodes mounted on a belt so as to lie against the lower portion of the sacrum. The housing for the generator may also be mounted on the belt and the electrodes preferably comprise a metal plate covered with layers of asbestos paper and enclosed in a covering of cloth, which may be wetted with salt water prior to use.
