956,859. Indicating working conditions. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Aug. 25, 1961 [Oct. 7, 1960], No. 30671/61. Heading F1B. Apparatus for timing the occurrence of peak pressure or the arrival of the combustion flame at a point in an I.C. engine cylinder 22, Fig. 1 with respect to the rotational displacement of the crank-shaft comprises devices 1, 2 for indicating flame arrival and peak pressure either of which electrically initiate a counter mechanism 16 to count or to terminate counting a series of pulses from a pulse generator 11, and pin/magnet means 12, 13 associated with the engine which stops or starts the counting at a predetermined point of rotation. When the flame reaches ion gap 1, direct current from power supply 24, is conducted, through an amplifier 6 to a pulse shaper 9 which, at a given intensity of signal, transmits a sharp clearly-defined signal to counter 16. Pulse generator 11 is driven directly or by belt from the engine, and emits an electric impulse for each degree of crank-shaft rotation to the counter 16 which, when initiated by the signal from pulse shaper 9, commences counting. A pin 12, of paramagnetic material, secured to the flywheel 21, induces a current in the coil of a stationary magnetic pick-up 13 which acts to make counter 16 unresponsive to the electric impulses from pulse generator 11. The rotational position of the pick-up 13 may be varied and any part moving cyclically in synchronism with crankshaft 23 may be used to drive the pulse generator. A record of transmitted data is obtained in a recorder 20 which is connected to the counter 16 through a printer 19. In a modification the pick-up 13 can initiate counting whilst the arrival of the flame at ion gap 1 stops the counting. Alternatively, the electric signal from a quartz crystal pressure pick-up 2 is passed through a differentiating amplifier 4 which passes the derivative of the signal to the pulse shaper. 9. In another embodiment the device is applied to an 8-cylinder I.C. engine.
